    High Fivers,

It was Christmas Eve (and I think all of you have to respect the self- control I exercised in NOT setting this in "the night before christmas" verse form) and I couldn't sleep. For some unknown reason, I sat up in bed at about 2:30 in the morning and turned on the Radio. I heard an ad for a nightclub who said they were going to have The Ben Folds Five there, copied down their phone number, turned off the radio, and went back to sleep.

I have since called and confirmed: The Ben Folds Five will be playing an all ages show at Tuxedo Junction in Danbury, CT for $5.00. It will be on Saturday, Jan. 20th from 6:30-9:30. You know I'm going to be there, and if any of you are, too, you can win free Silly Putty by playing the exciting concert game "Spot The Opus" (the BNL mailing list people know what I'm talking about here).

I don't know what magical forcegot me up in the night to turn on the radio, but it was a damn nice Christmas gift, and I thought I'd pass on the joy to any nutmeggers who might jonesing to see BF5 in concert.

    Cheese N' Macaroni,

Has anyone listened to these guys at all? Their eponymous album is the best thing I've bought all year. Just a piano/bass/drums trio that is sort of jazzy/gershwiny/Beatlesque/polkariffic. I think they're from North Carolina. If you see their album anywhere, buy it, it's amazing.

Yes, the tape rolled and I got to see the show. I have a couple observations about it, though. I thought the piano was mixed down - should have been up hotter. It also seemed for some strange reason like they rolled in a take from rehearsal because you couldn't hear _any_ audience noise during the opening parts of "Underground". When I put on the 'phones and turned it up I expected to hear chuckles when Darren says "Hand me my nose ring" (since the audience was probably unfamiliar with the band, for the most part) but all I heard was crosstalk from the timecode channel on the tape. At the end Ben acknowledged the "cheers and applause" but that could have been staged as well. And there was one shot from camera left where you could almost make out Conan's desk and it was hard to tell but I didn't see anyone sitting there. In case you didn't see it, all three were in red shirts and black pants in the usual configuration: Ben and his Baldwin to the left, Robert (his electric bass looked as beat up as the legendary piano) to the right and Darren at center rear. (Besides me, does Robert remind anyone of Johnny Sughrue?) FWIW, the lyrics were closed-captioned and followed along very nicely.

And Daniel in Halifax: Hope you don't mind but I've subscribed you to the list. Glad word of BFF has made it up to the harbor town that's supposedly waist deep and sinking fast. (It isn't really, is it? Maybe under the weight of Rita MacNeill it is.) -fjm
