Ben Folds Five Digest
Issue #14 - January 8, 1996

Subject: another (upcoming) BF sighting
Ben plays drums on a couple of cuts on the FLEMING AND JOHN album,
Delusions Of Grandeur. The album has been available on a rather limited
basis through an independent label, REX. But, in March, the F&J album is
being reissued through MCA's new Universal label, and will be widely
distributed. And, the bigger news is that Ben has a cameo role in the
first video from F&J, "I'm Not Afraid." Ben is seen on top of a huge
cake. Wacky!

Please add my name to the mailing list for Ben Folds Five. Are they ever
going to come to Florida?

[Not in the next couple months. The closest gigs are Atlanta and New
Orleans. -fjm]

Bless you for creating this wonderful page and list (Oh yeah...
Add me to it.) I'm down here in Gainesville just itching to see them
live like everyone else has. I'm seriously considering driving to see
them in Atlanta if it's a weekend show. Who am I kidding, I'd ditch
school to see 'em! I think I saw something mentioning a Semantics show
around here soon. Chapel Hill... The next music hub, no doubt.
Thanks.

[Adding to something Ned wrote in an earlier digest, I did find out that
D-Tox Records has the 7" that was mentioned. I'm assuming it's the demo of
Jackson Cannery. You can find them by searching Yahoo. They also have
material by Robert Sledge's former band, Toxic Popsickle.
I picked up Barry Black today myself. Thanks to Opus for tipping us off.
Like he said it's really nothing at all like BFF. Think of Zappa on
downers. Psychedelic is the term that comes to mind. Ben plays piano
and/or drums on most tracks, and Darren drums on one. It was produced by
Caleb Southern, who also produced BFF. To give you some idea, Eric
Bachmann is listed as playing instruments such as noisy keyboard, ensonic
flute, mouthpieces, water pot, and train whistle. If anyone's really
interested in hearing bits of it I'll digitize a couple samples and put
'em up.
Now, a serious question of an administrative nature: A couple people have
pointed out that the back issues of the digest are publically accessible
off the web page, and that many mailing lists make the archives available
only to list members. Also, some list archives delete names and/or
addresses from the messages for security, although I feel that that
would remove an essential part of the message (and be a large
adminstrative burden on the archive maintainer). If you have
any strong feelings one way or the other, let us know. In the meantime
I've taken the digest archive off the "Mailing List" page but it is still
available if you link directly to
http://oeonline.com/~maynard/bff/list/
If there are no strong objections I'll put it back since I feel the
archive provides a valuable information resource to someone who wants to
find out more about the band. -fjm]
