Subject: Rumors???
I don't want to spread any rumors, but I was looking for a confirmation one
way or the other on:
1) BF5 had signed to Sony recently and
2)another album was expected out by this summer.
Thanks for any facts,
jon

Subject: Ben Folds plays just for me...
Heya,
I was going to write my usual long thesis on the concert and the events
before and after (and beleive me, it was a heluva day) but I really have no
time right now. And I've been putting it off since Saturday, so I might as
well tell you to get you all jealous. A warning, though, I tend to ramble a
bit, so be prepared to read...
I went to the Danbury, CT, show wearing what I usually do: a hat and tie
(I've quite a collection of weird ties and nice hats, so I tend to show
them off). On that day it was a brown fedora and a red Animaniacs tie, one
of my favorites.
The stage was tiny; the only way you could differentiate it from the rest
of the club was that it stopped being tile and started being wood. The club
had a bigger stage but apparently decided Ben and the fellers weren't big
enough for it, so the stuck them in the bar area.
Even little Ben Folds drew a bit of a crowd, and when the show started, my
friends and I found it hard to dance in the group of people in front.
(Surprisingly enough, most of them were older couples. Have all the
younguns been turned off by the bitter "Underground"?) From the side of the
stage, we still had a good view, a lot of room to dance, and Ben Folds was
facing us (since his piano was sideways) for the majority of the concert.
When Ben was playing, i was dancing, in a style which has been described as
the motions of a spasmatic monkey. I cannot deny this comparason, since
there is a point where the music takes control of my body (much Satan does
to Linda Blair in "The Exorcist" except much, much hipper). I suppose this
makes a bit of a spectacle, but that's the price I pay.
After one song was over, however, Ben said, "Hey, I like the guy in the
hat!" and pointed to me. I blushed a bit and he continued, "I feel like I
should be playing Madness!". So, without further adu, the three of the Five
launched into "One Step Beyond" and he watched me as I danced. I even lept
over to the stage, and, in my best British accent, sang along, "One Step
Beyond!". Ben stopped, and said, "Hey, you, don't watch that! Watch this!"
(all of which are words in the song) and I laughed and left the stage; Ben
having played for me and me having danced for him.
Later on, during the rousing "Philosophy" finale, my friend and I had taken
to jumping in time with the music as part of our dance, and Ben spotted us
and jumped along, pounding the ivories the entire time. It was inspiring
and special, and I approached him after the show, dripping with sweat and
happy for the wonderful concert.
I thanked him a lot for the great show and gave him a container of Silly
Putty, for which he said, "Thanks! I love this stuff!". They were ushering
people out of the bar as fast as they could, so i told him that I'd see him
the next night, as the plan was to go up to Northampton and catch his show
there. He said he'd watch for me. I also planned ot bring some Silly Putty
for the other guys in the band, too, since I didn't want to leave them out.
Of course, I never got to go to Northampton (my ride flaked out on me last
minute) so I didn't get to talk to him again. But I'll tell you this: not
only is Ben Folds one of the best singer/songwriters out there, he also
puts on a great show and is, in my small experience, a great feller, too.
Plus, he likes Silly Putty, so how bad can he be?
With love and midgets,
opus

hey frank... add this to the list...
since everyone's saying how their BF5 disc never leaves the changer...
well i've got a changer at home and one in the car... dilemma, eh?
nope, just buy the cd twice so i never have to move it. there's only
one other disc i did that with... TPOH 'Where's the Bone?'... BF5 is
definitely my choice for 1995's album of the year....
1. ben folds five (blew everything else out of the h20)
2. tpoh - where's the bone
3. menswear
4. danger danger - dawn
5. matthew sweet - 100% fun
that's my top 5!
see ya'll in pontiac!!!

Will anyone rally with me for a Boston show sometime this spring? I love
this music (the kicker for me was the line "Hey, that's Darin's
girlfriend!") and I discovered the web page (and accompanying tour
schedule) just one day after the show in Northampton ...
Unbearable disappointment.

Well I do believe that by word of mouth alone that the Ben Folds Five will
conquer the world. I got my bro a copy of the CD for X-mas, and he left a
message on my machine that he thought the CD was "Groovy", etc. And has
been telling all his friends in DC about it. He also very eager to see the
band perform live in his neck of the woods.
I'm looking forward to see the boys perform live again tomorrow night in
Pontiac.
Chris
