wow, now that was a short issue. i only got one response to my tops of 95
lists from some guy who didn't understand that alternative music is no
longer alternative. hmph. i hate the suburbs. anyway, the place that bf5
played in madison (i think) burned down today. oh well, i couldn't get in
there anyway. only a few more months...but they might be giants are coming
here on march 31st. if you're in the madison area and are into tmbg, gimmie
a ring or e-mail or whatnot. now i gotta get back to botany. ooh, and
during the setup for our 80's promo thing for the radio, me and another guy
on my staff were plunking out bf5 songs, and were yelled at by the other
promo people. not because of the music, but because we weren't blowing up
 the baloons.

Of course there will be no show here at DC. The best show I've seen in a
while was Jim Carroll on Friday night at the Black Cat. Does anyone know
the tour dates for Ben Folds Five so far for now?

 Hello.
I bought Ben Folds band CD right after the article in Musician magazine
(Nov 95?). Heavy rotation on my CD carousel and in my car (I have a
 daily 1 hour commute).
 Anyway...
I'd like to subscribe to your mailing list.
 Thanks.

Well, the soundtrack itself has an asterisk next to songs that were not
actually in the movie, and Song for the Dumped wasn't one of them, so
theoretically it should be in there. As to where, though, I dunno..

Becuase of all the fuss surrounding the "Underground" video recently, I
decided to download the clip MTV had to offer to give it another chance. My
 verdict still hasn't changed.

One last thing: the original single that's available from D-Tox, how much
to they charge, including shipping and handling? I want to send them a
check but I don't want to have to wait for them to write back to know how
 much to send...

I just read that BFF's song was on the soundtrack, but not in the movie.
SOunds like Hollywood has struck again. Remember the soundtrack to "Mike's
Murder" by Joe Jackson? Instrumental and vocal tracks and I think they
only used MEMPHIS for 10 seconds. Ah, what do they know?

Can anyone explain to me why they would chosse this song over all the
great tracks on the album to release? I mean, it's a good song, but
there's really not much to it. Actually, I think it's the weakest track
 on the album.
Any ideas on this? Is it just cause it's a cutesy attack on the
 indie rock scene?

When I saw a BFF album ad. on the Japanese music magazine, I found that the
Japanese version BFF album has a bonus track called "Tom and Mary".

Is this song available in U.S.? If not, I'll ask my girlfriend in Japan to
buy and send Japanese version album (the price in Japan cosst appro. $25
 though).

Ben Folds five did relatively well in this years Village Voice poll,
finishing in 36th place with 151 points, and just behind Wilco and The
Bottle Rockets. The 151 points came from 13 ballots, btw. I haven't
found a copy of it yet so I'm not sure what, if anything, was written
about them. Anyone? Have they already been posted here?

Still, considering little if any airplay, a first release, as well as the
critics "must-choose" acts like PJ Harvey, Elastica, etc, this is a
 pretty good showing

Hey there, I'm new to the list, but I was at the Casbah too (front,
center), and man-oh-man, it was a really fun show. Considering Ben said
he was "sick as hell," I'd really like to see these guys play when he's
feeling good, 'cos along with Son Volt and Wilco, it was one of the best
shows I've seen in the last year (And SV and BF5 are pretty far apart
musically, while Wilco's a happy melding of the two). Halfway through the
show, some Idiot (with a capitol "I") shouted "Elton John" wall BF was
intro-ing a song, which didn't seem to phase him much. As well as being
obnoxious, it just seems the wrong thing to shout--I see a hell of a lot
more Jerry Lee Lewis in his playing the Elton John, him slamming the keys
with his forearms, feet, and even his stool in order to produce the
crashing, over-the-top effect. Fun, fun stuff. I/we feel into 10 foot
deep grooves, danced a little, drank a little and had a blast. It's a
tight band. Some damn fine hooks, this band has. That's, "this BAND."
They're a tight, fun group, and Darren's drumming and Sledge's Bass
clicked really well. And the man can sing, too. Oh well, enough
double-driveling on my part. I tend to babble, sorry.
It was the first time I'd heard "Song For the Dumped," and man, was I
duped. Just when I thought it was going to turn into trite
sentimentality ("So you wanted/to take a break...") he went and sang
"Fuck you, too/gimme my money back/you bitch." I'm still not going
anywhere near the movie tho', especially with a new Coen brothers flick
coming out soon. The lyrics reminded me a lot of a Harry Nilson(?) song I
 heard a long time ago.
