Subject: Cleveland Bound?
Over the weekend, I got to thinking about how cool it might be to journey to
Cleveland next week to see BF5 perform there. Maybe check out the Hall of
Fame, too. Anyway, I live in central PA and was wondering if there are any
other BF5 fans within driving distance of me who might also like to make such
a trek. I'd be willing to drive. I called the Odeon and the tickets are
only $6. On another note, I obtained a CD of "The Difference" radio show
from mid-November (hosted by Todd Rundgren) on which BF5 were featured.
There's a very brief interview with Ben, followed by an in-studioperformance
of Jackson Cannery. In the interview, Ben described the record as kind of
a "best of" collection of things he's written to date. Video, he said, dated
back to his high school days, and other tunes were written while they were
making the record. He said Jackson Cannery was written on guitar. Queen's
Don't Stop Me Now was played on the show after Jackson Cannery. Nice seque.
Finally, I have BF5's appearance on Conan if anyone wants to e-mail me a

That's right, also Eddie Walker (I know some a lot of you are familiar
with the BF5 song "Eddie Walker") does vocals and plays guitar for Bus
Stop. I went to see AnnA to the Infinite Power
(http://www.unc.edu/~pinworm) open for Bus Stop in january, and both
bands ROCKED. Chuck Folds sounds just like Ben when he talks, it's
a little eerie. They played an old Majasha tune that was absolutely
remarkable.

Thought I should dutifully post something on the Seattle show Saturday night
at Moe's. I must admit, that from a "show" standpoint, I was a bit
dissapointed. However, I base that dissapointment on the immense amount of
buzz on this list concerning his "pranks," prattle," and "puns." Ben came
on about midnight (more on this later) and immediately launched into Best
Imitation of Myself. The band was very tight--although they did seem to be
lacking a little energy. Ben explained that they had just completed a Japan
mini-tour and said it was a pleasure to not have to become a "cheerleader"
(letting the audience know when it was appropriate to go ahead and break
loose!). Unlike a prior review, I found the arrangements to be a bit
different, and certainly played at a little different tempo. I really can't
say anything that hasn't been said already about this group--they really
rock! I must admit, though, that I was even more impressed by Ben's playing
live than on the cd. He played several new songs (Song for the Dumped,
which was pretty good, and the "dwarf" song which was an absolute gem of a
song). It was on the dwarf song that Ben really showed what he's got. What
a player.
Concerning the "show" aspect though, I must admit to being a bit
dissapointed. I don't know if I had unrealistic expectations, or if I've
been out of the "loop" for so long that I wasn't aware that groups had long
ago stopped putting on "shows." I am one of the older fans of this group
(43) and realize that when people say show, I immediately remember Earth,
Wind, and Fires' incredible tour of the late 70s that included an
eye-popping light show and incredible magic tricks incorporated into the
evening (okay, so it was rehearsed), or Emerson, Lake, and Palmers' shows of
the 70s that included levitating pianos that rotated in the air (while Keith
Emerson played!). Now, having said that, this tour is hardly on the same
level as those (monetarily at the very least), and that type of "glitter"
has long since disappeared from the music scene (a pity really, considering
the prices we pay for top line acts. But, ultimately, we go to the show to
hear music, and that we did! At the very least, if this group does not make
it big, Ben Folds almost certainly will! I can't recall a stronger or more
diverse songwriter.......ever. Elton Johns'and Billy Joels' (to a lesser
extent) were not even in the same league as this guy (although Billy's early
stuff was quite diverse). While the guys were lacking a little physical
energy, the music did not suffer in the least. He DID do a couple forearm
and stool slams on the keyboards and a final "body" slam at the end, but
after reading other's accounts in this list, I thought that the show would
be a bit more "zany."
Concerning the getting old part--we were all disappointed when we saw that
Ben wouldn't come on until 12:00. But, being determined to see the show, we
all piled into my car and decided to do a progressive dinner until 12:00.
By the time we got back, we were cranked up on about 3 lattes a piece and
had no trouble getting up for the show once it started.
Moe's is a great place for music, by the way. I look forward to Ben's next
tour (and album). I just hope I get to see him in a small venue like this
once more, before he becomes a cultural and generational icon.

Hey all!
This is my first post...i've only been on the list for a few days now...and
I have a few questions--
first of all, to Ian (if he is the one who asked about the Boston concert),
please send me any info. that you get on it, because I will DEFINITELY be
there...and i don't want to be late or anything...and this is to anyone
else out there who has any more info on that show. Also, for the person at
Williams, I don't know if Providence is closer to you than Boston, but they
are in Providence on Fri, Mar. 22 at club Babyhead...don't know any more
than that...
Another question...someone mentioned something about a postcard...what
postcard is that? I sent an SASE to them to get the lyrics for the album,
and I never got anything back! One of my friends got back the lyric sheet,
and was put on the mailing list...is that my only way on, or can I get on
it some other way...please give me any info that you have!
Last one...what other recordings are out there with BF5 on it besides the
album? Some people are mentioning "Mr. Wrong"...what is that???? I love
them, and i want whatever is out there!
It is great to see that they are catching on...I am certainly passing on
their name, and everyone who hears them loves them...
I can't wait to see them...I met them when they were in Boston in December
and they are so cool!

While checking out the new magazines at the local Barnes & Noble, I stumbled
across Entertainment Weekly's Spring Preview issue. Inside there was a chock
full of useless info, until I got ot the music section. Somewhere past the
Bryan Adams interview, the mag interviewed three radio persons about what's
hot. The third one is an interview with the director of an AAA station who
says that BF5 and "Underground" are the band and song to look for this
spring. I didn't buy the mag so I don't remember the exact details. Also
I'm editor in chief of my school's newspaper (the Cheltonian). Last month I
reviewed BF5. I gave it 5 stars out of 4. It should be posted on our web
site soon. I'll keep you informed.
Anyone else going to the Philly show? My tix are in the mail.
