Subject: The BFF Rhythm Method
Hello All:
This is in response to all you good folks who have been writing
about BFF's musical prowess, and in particular, their rhythm section
(incidentally, I consider a piano a rhythm instrument as well). I am a
bass player who has been playing in rhytmn sections for punk, funk,
zydeco, reggae bands for 11 years. I've even collaborated on soundtracks
for independent films and pit orchestras for obscure plays. All I have
to say is this: I wish I played in a rhythm section as musical and
exhilirating as BFF's. The most striking aspect of Sledge and Jessee's
collaborations is their subtlety. While Ben hammers away at complicated
chord voicings and rhythms, Sledge and Jessee not only create their own
brand of energy, but they underline and emphasize Ben's most understated
grace notes or glissandos. Not only that, but they can sing and play at
the same time! Amazing stuff, really.

"Boxing" and "The last Polka" were my favorite songs on the cd from the
start. Boxing is a deeply emotinal song. Ben wrote this song for his dad,
so there's a lot more behind this song than we know, I think.

"Video" is definitely one of my favorite songs on the cd. It's such a
great song. It's something everyone can really understand. "I remeber when
misery thrilled me much more." It's such an awesome song. I think it's one
of the best songs on the cd.

[Chops = embouchure; lips, as pertains to playing wind, particularly
brass, instruments, and by extension, referring to any form of musical
proficiency. "Man, dig his chops - that cat can blow!" The term "blow" has
also been appropriated from the wind usage, notably by Michael Franks:

Subject: BFF: Who is Alice Childress?
Hello All:
Over the past month or so, I've read messages from people who
were trying to find out who Alice Childress was. I even remember
one person suggesting that Alice Childress is a female analog to Alex
Chilton of Big Star.
I am a 3d year law student who not only listens to BFF
religiously, but is also taking a course on Copyright Law. All those
times I kept hearing the song "Alice Childress," I kept thinking to
myself, "That name sounds awfully familiar." Why?
It all begins with a court case in the United States Court of
Appeals for the Second Circuit. The case is Childress v. Taylor, 945
F.2d 500 (1991). In this famous copyright case, Clarice Taylor asks
Alice Childress, a renown playright associated with the American Negro
Theatre in Harlem, to write a biographical play about Moms Mabley.
Taylor supplies all sorts of biographical information to Alice Childress
about Moms Mabley's personal habits, etc. After a disagreement, Taylor
gives Childress' play to another writer in order to have it reworked.
Taylor says that she can do this because she claims to be a "joint
author" as defined by section 101 of Title 17 of the United States Code
(The Copyright Act of 1976). Alice Childress sues for copyright
infringement alleging that she was the sole owner of the copyright in the
Moms Mabley play. The 2d circuit agreed and Alice Childress emerged
victorious.
Oh well, I hope I don't come across as being too geeky, but at
least we all know now that a person named Alice Childress exists, that
she is somewhat famous, and that she won a great deal of money in a court
battle.
As to who the actual Alice Childress referred to in the song,
well, she doesn't sound like a playwright, does she?

FWIW, I like "Stop the Bus!" if anyone has or hasn't offered it for a
name. "Mortar Block and Glass" was a good suggestion.... I like
"Underground", but if the CDA stands up through the court proceedings,
we might get banned. "Underground? This must be some sort of pervert's
list. Why else are they underground? Sic 'em Jesse!" Just a thought. "I
got a Bag of Trash" would be nice, but rather long. We could always go
for "Girls Who Look Like Axl Rose", but that's rather long too.

Th psychodots are great! They were both the opening band and the
backing band for Adrian Belew about two years ago at a concert here in
Atlanta (Belew and the psychodots used to be The Bears, another great band,
before Belew acquired fame and fortune with Oh Daddy and all those guitar
magazine awards). I have two of their cds, autographed after the show, but
I always wondered if there were more released... any idea, Melinda? Any of
you BFF fans who can find the psychodots music really might want to check
it out. And their T-shirts are cool, too.
Cincinatti may be a musical hole, but Atlanta's where the music isn't
at all.
When I asked Robert Sledge about the D-Tox single, he seemed surprised
that the stock was out, and said they might try to re-press it. He sounded
like it was nowhere near a priority, so don't anyone hold your breath.

went to see cats and dogs today! SUPER flick- i cried (a lot), laughed

i don't understand what guys see in uma thurman- she's gross! waaay to

also- hope noone's already pointed this out. in the recent ish of
Entertainment weekly, there is a story on the top 25 best selling albums
ever. elton john's greatest hits was on there and they interviewed ben
for it. it's really short so you could probably just go read it while
you are standing in line at the store!
