I just bought Ben Folds Five, and upon first listening was happily
reassured that rock and roll had *not*, as I had previously suspected,
been taken over by jaded ironists and angry folks whose cacophonous
musical offerings corresponded in absolutely no way to my emotions or
world view. Yes, I'll admit that I like Todd Rundgren and Joe Jackson.
But that's not why I like these guys. Really. I like them because
they're not afraid to admit that there's still a place for
 thoughtfulness in rock and roll.

So anyway, I'd like to be kept abreast of whatever's happening with
 them. Thanks.

When does the Uncle Walter video air on MTV? I understand that it's going to
be on MTV's "120 Minutes" program on Sunday, but I don't know what time on
 Sunday that show airs.

 Thanks, Michael Bluejay (Austin, TX)

[The program starts at Midnight, eastern time. The video should be in
 the first hour. -fjm]

 Hi,

the album got 3 out of 5 in a review in Sweden's biggest national
newspaper (Expressen). Here's a crappy translation:

"This will be a sure hit with boys that likes to hang around in
record stores and knows the history of rock. It's about a trio from
Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with an odd arrangement: bass, drums and
piano. And about powerful melodic rock with a lot of 70-feeling.
Clever but singalong-friendly somewhere between Squeeze and Todd
 Rundgren."

Oh, and I've heard "Julianne" on the radio again. :)

 Take care,

 Magnus

Where can I get BFF paraphenalia (specifically a t shirt) ?
Is their a number to call, an address or something?

Also, just wanted to let everyone know I'm still the bastion
for Ben and the Gang here in West Virginia. And when Lollapalooza
hits Pittsburgh I'll be there...and I want a BFF shirt to don so help me out!

One more thing, I too thought the band's name referred to something
dealing with cards, like a verb phrase. Ben folds five. Oh well,
I must admit it sounds cooler than three though.

First off, to defend my movie expertise, the movie "The Truth About Cats and
Dogs" wasn't that bad. In fact it was kinda good. The only thing I didn't
like is that throughout the movie I felt as though I had already seen it.
And it was very predictable. Sorry, but I think my movie interests lie more
in the "fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants," suspense, thriller of sorts. OK,
 enough explaining.

Here's a question. I got my summer job and this summer its at T.G.I.Friday's
in Sandusky, OH. Now, since it's all of your's favorite resturaunt and
you'll all stop by to eat and tip me big so I can continue my college
education, you all also know that the servers usually prance around wearing
hats. So, (drum roll please), does anyone know where I can get a Ben Folds
Five HAT? I have the T-Shirt and have practically worn it out, but HATS? Do
they even exist? If anyone knows or owns a hat company and will make me one
( ; , not only would you be my best friend, but I would forever be eternally
grateful!!!! Please email me if you know, or post it. I'm sure others are
 interested!!!

 Thank you!

 LETTER FROM JAPAN

[Azusa Motohashi attended all the Japan shows and wrote to me about them:
 -fjm]

(Shibuya Club Quattro, Tokyo, Feb. 24):
In Japan, "Jackson Cannery" was the big hit. Therefore, they changed the
song list after the first day. And "Eddie Walker, This Is Your Life" was
not played in Japan after that day.

I was impressed by their friendly manners and smiles. Ben's playing was
 beautiful.

(Shinsaibashi Club Quattro, Osaka, Feb. 28):
At this show, some of the piano keys were out of tune. That's regrettable.
Ben spoke Osaka dialect and normal Japanese. He has good ears, I think.

(On Air West, Tokyo, Mar. 2):
After the encore, Ben wore a long hair wig and smashed up the guitar.

We experienced "Ben Folds Five Typhoon" not only in the show halls but
also at CD stores. They arrived at HMV Ikebukuro to meet Japanese fans.
They answered questions and signed autographs for 200 people. And more,
they sang "Best Imitation of Myself" with only a piano. Usually the song
has no introduction, but at that time Ben played a very beautiful piano
introduction. We were enjoying listening to that.
