 Hey everyone!

Frank, I'm sorry to do this to you, but I vote for
 "Maynard" for the show chant.
(good call, Greg) We could even do it like that
swimming pool game, Marco Polo. You know, like
"Maynard"---"Fra-ank", over and over until we find
each other in the crowd. "Stop the Bus" was a
good try, but I think it would be too confusing
and would lend itself to non-list member
shouting. (And we can't have that!)

Not to be egregious to JFido@aol.com, but the topic of Ben Folds'
"wicked drummage on the Fleming and John CD" has been rather thoroughly
covered some time ago. Frank, are there any archives available of this
 digest?

Jeez! Take a powder, guy. This is a fan list. Let people ask whatever
they want. I'm a working piano player and while Ben is a big inspiration
to me musically and enjoy reading the many reviews of shows that appear
here, I'm also intensely interested in the actual logistics of their shows
(i.e. moving and tuning an 800 lb. instrument at every gig)

I find this kind of information infinitely more useful than such pointless
  drivel as:

 > giant, gloriously lit statue of Ronald McDonald sodomizing a frog).

 Happy listening!

When I saw them play, they also covered that song. It was a strange,
wonderful moment where I got lost in the sheer magnitude of a pop song.
They did it SOOOOOO well. I was awestruck.

On the topic of songs they should cover...I don't know who originally did
it, but that song "Palisades Park" would be pretty cool ("Down at Palisades
Park...") Anyone know which one I'm talking about? It's an oldie, but a
goodie. It kinda sounds like "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John, but it's older
than that. I also completely dig the idea of them doing a cover of "Let's
GO Crazy". That is ingenious. Not igneous, like the rock, but ingenious.
 Yeah.

 All,

For all the British fans out there who don't read NME (shame on you) BFF
are featured this week on the "New" section. The general gist of the
interview is that "Where's Summer B" is released on June 10 with two
non-album tracks on the B-side. They are playing the NME stage at Reading
Festival on the Saturday night (I'll be there!!).

NME is quite flattering and Ben is quoted as saying, "Well, if you don't
like BFF then you can F**k Off" then, as NME reports, 'Bless his soul, Ben
 Folds Blushes".

Also reported is that BFF will be returning to Britain at the end of June
to play a few more dates and that the album has jumped from 23 to 9 in the
 British indie charts. Good News.

I'll add my tuppence worth (or should that be 2 cents worth) to the
 favorite bands list.
 How about: Blameless
            Ocean Colour Scene
            Kula Shaker

Seek them out and listen, American friends!!

 Bye,

 Darren

Hi all in the sunny (ahem) climes of the dear old British Isles,

The latest UK news is as follows:

 1) Where's Summer B? will be released on CD and 7" on June 10th. The
7" will be backed with "Tom & Mary"(live), while the CD has "Tom &
 Mary"(live) and "Emmalaine"(live).

 2) Ben Folds Five are due to play the second stage at the Reading
Festival on Saturday August 24th. Tickets for the whole weekend are
60 pounds. And guess who just bought a ticket to go to T In The Park,
and can't afford to go to both..........

 On other notes,

 1) I think "Satan" would be a fine thing to shout.

 2) I think "Perfect Circle" from R.E.M.'s "Murmur" would be perfect
for BF5 to play. Piano, bass and harmonies.....

 3) If anyone is interested, I have the Jools Holland Show on VHS/PAL
video. I'm not here for much longer, so if you are interested, get in
 quick.

Finally, I would like to put forward a suggestion. I'm sure there are
many people on the list who only have access to email during their
school terms, and thus will be departing the list until September.
Now, we wouldn't like to think that we would be missing something, so
how about someone making a collection of interesting points from the
lists over the summer, a sort of FAQ, that could be mailed to people
when they resubscribe. It needn't be every post, just important stuff
that crops up. That way we wouldn't need to post dumb messages once
we get back that are simply repeats of what has been said whilst we
 are away. Anyone?

 Mark

[Would anyone be willing to compile a digest digest for the summer
unsubscribers? It could be put up on the web to avoid having to mail it
 to everyone. -fjm]

but do we want this to actually happen? isn't it nice to be able to go to
a small intimate club and have a good time with a really kickin' band,
instead of barging your way through a stadium crowd when half of the
people there are only there because the band is a popular one?
personally, i'd like to be able to see BF5 a few times in the club scene
before they get "hootie" big. (unfortunately for me, BF5 are playing at
Lollapalloza, and they are the only band i want to see there. well, i do
want to see the Ramones do "i wanna be sedated".) i don't mean to stop
their career, but i don't want them to hit it big quite yet, so i can say
a few years down the line "yeah, i got to see them in a club once" when
i'm in line at the ticketcenter for the big stadium concert.

may the force be with you

 Subject: BF5: Can't stop blabbering about BF5

I haven't posted in a while so I'm gonna punish you with a long post. :-)

SHOUTING OUT SLOGANS: I don't think we should shout out "Stop the Bus!"
because then everyone will just think we're requesting a song and that we
don't even know its proper title. Something obscure is definitely better --
"Frank" would be my choice except that Frank doesn't like it... "Satan" is
another good one. Perhaps "Azusa", the Japanese fan who was instrumental in
getting BF5 to tour Japan? Maybe something totally off the wall like "You
suck!", simply because it would be ironic and confusing.

WHAT BF5 SHOULD COVER: It's funny that someone mentioned "Let's Go Crazy",
since my guitar-less band has been doing that one for the last year. We also
do "Crocodile Rock" which someone here also suggested, but that one's not so
surprising since it's a piano song. I'd like to see BF5 cover songs that
have lots of 60/70s pop styles (especially heavy on the Maj7 chords) and
songs that you wouldn't expect to be done with a piano. Songs I'd like to
see BF5 cover include: Martha My Dear (Beatles), Wedding Bell Blues (5th
Dimension), Age of Aquarius (5th Dimension), Hello it's Me (Todd Rundgren), I
Love You (Climax Blues Band), One Way or Another (Blondie), Dreaming
(Blondie), My Sharona (Knack), Running w/the Devil (Van Halen), You Really
 Got Me (Kinks/Van Halen).

HOW I HEARD ABOUT BF5: To whoever was collecting stories about how we heard
about BF5 -- I won a music trivia game on an online service last summer, and
they sent me a BF5 tape as my prize. I was annoyed at first to get a tape
from an unknown band, but then I played it and I was an instant fan. I feel
just a bit smug that I heard about them before most other folks, but it was
actually just a stroke of luck. Anyway, the group, especially Ben, has had a
profound effect on me, and encouraged me to really start pursuing playing
 music again.

APPROPRIATE TOPICS: To the guy who said "Stop the pointless E-Mail topics!
Who gives two slacks if Ben Folds tunes his own piano or not?" -- I'm sure
I'm not the only person on this list who has an interest in how Ben's piano
gets tuned. Until this list gets way too big to manage, then I think
anything related to BF5 is fair game.

SPYING ON BF5: I checked the customer database at Apple Computer (where I
work) to see if I could find home addresses and phone numbers for Ben & the
boys (not that I would violate their privacy by actually using them, of
course). None of them are in there, although there is a Robert Sledge from a
totally different state -- probably a different guy. However, there IS a
Charles Folds in NC... (Don't ask me for the number; you know I can't give
 it to you.)

BF5 KARAOKE?: I'm disappointed about the lack of response to my idea of
having a BF5 hoot night in Raleigh next month, so we're just gonna play
without a BF5 theme when we swing through Raleigh. However, if any fans want
to come sing, then we might do a little BF5 karaoke. We're playing at The
Grove in Raleigh with local band Regraped on Thursday, June 13th. Come check
out my Roland JV-35 keyboard that I got Ben to autograph with an engraver at
 their last Austin show. :-)

"My unlimited love to you all" (Barry White),

   -- Michael Bluejay (Austin TX)

["My Sharona" would be a great cover - can't you just hear Robert's
fuzzy bass doing the "doo-doo-DOO-DOO-doo..DOO" part? Oh, and "Charles
Folds" is Chuck, Ben's brother, who is a member of Bus Stop and who gets
this mailing list, so watch what you say about him. Figures he'd have an
Apple... creative types, you know. -fjm]

Subject: Fleming & John and MAJOSHA (prev. BF band)

Hey Amanda. So you can't figure out where Mr. Folds plays on the Fleming &
John CD, eh? Well, for one thing, he isn't playing piano here, he's playing
drums. Perhaps you knew that already. At any rate, Mr. Folds plays drums on
the tracks "I'm Not Afraid", "Rain All Day" & "Hanging on a Notion". This
info can be found at the end of the lyrics for any of the given songs in the
booklet where it lists the extra players.
So, do you like the F&J CD? I think it's really great stuff.
And hey, have any of you hardcore BFF fans out there heard Majosha? That's
the band Mr. Folds was in during the early 90's before he left for greater
pursuits. Majosha concerts were an amazing thing. And to think they used to
cover "Throw the Dick" by 2 Live Crew. Interesting stuff. The original
version of "Video" is on this album. I used to live in Greensboro NC, which
is where Majosha (and Folds) were "headquartered" at the time, and I have a
pristine copy of the Majosha album on vinyl, which is the only way (aside
from cassette) that it exists. If anyone has any interest in hearing it, I
can dub copies. It sounds pretty much like a great BFF record if they had
 guitars. Later all.

Today at the Record Exchange in Greensboro, NC i happened to be combing
through the 7-inch vinyl and stumbled upon an image of Ben diving shoulder
first onto his piano. It was a UK-produced "Underground" single! The a-side
is actually an edit of "Underground," with all the intro stuff removed...
the song starts with the guys singing "WE CAN BE HAPPY UNDERGROUND" then
goes into the music. Other than that it's the same as the album. The b-side
is the album version of "Sports & Wine."

The record is copyright 1996 by Caroline Records, made in the UK, and
distributed by Vital. Inside there was a Caroline insert designed to be
mailed back for more info on BF5 and Caroline. The address printed on the
front side is in London, and small print on the other side says, "Ben Folds
Five album will be out on April 29th. See press for April tour dates."

Anyway, just thought i'd share. Also, i'm not sure if anyone has mentioned
this, but Greensboro-based Geezer Lake is opening for BF5 on their current
 club tour... at Ben's request.

Looking forward to *finally* seeing BF5 on June 10 in Nashville (i find it
odd i have to leave NC to see them),
 Doug
