Subject: And you're all dressed up like...the Jive Bureaux?!

Hey...
I work in a record store--the kind that actually sells records, including
WAEA on vinyl--and the other day my boss handed me an old 45 of "School Daze"
by the Jive Bureaux. "Listen to this," he said, "it sounds just like Ben
Folds Five." And you know what? It did! There was a guitarist in the band,
but the pianist provided most of the melodic interest--and the chord changes
were very, VERY reminiscent of a lot of Ben's work. The singer sounded a lot
more like Joe Jackson than Ben does, so I figured this was one of those
English bands that popped up like weeds in the wake of Joe's success. Then I
checked the copyright date, and the record was made in 1977--a year or two
before Joe's debut! So maybe HE was influenced by THEM. (And if that was
the case, boy, wouldn't THEY be bitter.) I don't know whether the Jive
Bureaux ever made an album, but if you ever see that "School Daze" 45, it'd
be worth picking up--not only as a conversation piece, but 'cause it's a good
little record. But how could it not be, if it sounds like our favorite sons
of Chapel Hill?

Hi,

I'm just looking for a guy on here. If you're not him, sorry... Anyway, my
friend and I were at the Salt Lake show on April 8th, but were too young to
get in. Ben was really sorry and came to talk to us. Another guy and his
date were kind enough to take our pictures with him, and I was kind enough to
send him a copy of the show. He moved to North Carolina soon afterwards, and
I no longer have his email and never had his snail. I don't even know the
guy's name. Perhaps, just perhaps, you're reading Mr.X and would be kind
enough to get in touch with us. I would be more than happy to pay for
postage and the photos. Please, Dear God, if you're out there, could we get
our pictures with Ben?

Thank you kindly,
Bryce

Subject: Influences

I have recently picked up (and borrowed) Joe Jackson and Squeeze CD's simply
because I have heard that they are BFF influences/sound-alikes. I have to
say, after a meager 2 listenings to each CD, I love Jackson and Squeeze
already! I can hear the strong Squeeze connection, but Joe Jackson, except
for the poignant lyrics and occasional piano insertions in the music, I
wouldn't really place with BFF. However, all three bands are in that silly
category that's somewhere in between jazz, pop, rock, and alternative and is
impossible to describe to people who ask, "What kind of music do they play?"

On a sadder note, I have just heard that HORDE is not coming to Atlanta for
the first time in it's history. I'm VERY upset...but does anyone know if
HORDE is coming anywhere near Atlanta in it's run?
OK, that's my small semi-monthly contribution to the Armchair...

Nuts to ya'll,
Sara

I, too, laughed my head off at the rumours of what had happened with BFF &
Farah on Conan. And with something that funny, who cares if it's true or
not ?!? :)

Just out of interest, did anyone see Ms Fawcett on Letterman? She was
either drunk or high... and Dave knew it!.... oh how I *love* to see a
victim of Hollywood..........

Sorry, no direct BFF stuff ... but I _was_ interested to see in the Top
10's that lots of you out there like R.E.M. I reckon BFF & REM complement
each other pretty well, in a rather esoteric way which I have yet to
define...

Thought for the day......

Subject: What happened at Ottawa and other questions answered

Couple answers from sources close to the band regarding questions asked
here recently:

Q. Why did the Ottawa show get cancelled?

A. The Ottawa show at Barrymore's was cancelled because of Ben being sick.
We were worried that pushing that show thru would have the effect of
ruining the PBS filming the next day. Luckily, not doing Barrymore's
gave his strained throat enough of the needed rest to get the job done
the next day. It's not so much that we cared more about PBS than Ottawa,
it was a choice of losing one show or the other and it seemed to be the
obvious choice.

Q. What about that Kate video?

A. The vid was recorded in Japan in Ben's hotel room before a show. It will
probably never see the light of day on MTV in the states.

Q. Ben called Snow to the stage in Toronto but he didn't come up. What up
with this?

A. One of Ben's management people also works for Snow, who had come by
earlier in the day to say hi. There was discussion of him coming up on
stage with the guys, but he wasn't able to make it back that night. Ben
couldn't get word that Snow wasn't in the house because of how crowded
the venue was, so it was more of an "are you out there" than anything.

Were the things I really cared about just left along the way?

Subject: Article in Music Connection

I don't think I've seen any mention of this yet, but there is an
excellent article in Music Connection magazine, the West Coast music
trade magazine published in Hollywood. It's the cover story with a
picture of the band on the cover. The article talks about Ben's musical
background and influences, the deals with the record labels and tales of
touring. The article appears in the May 12-25, 1997 issue (Vol. XXI, No.
10) and seems to be available mainly on the west coast, but back issues
are available through http://www.musicconnection.com.
