Subject: Comparing the Albums
So I've been ruminating on the content of the two albums and it seems to me
that, as far as lyrical content and general musical mood are concerned,
there are two distinct dynamics involved here.
The first album is what I would call a philisophical album--not because of
any deep, earth-shaking truths which have been revealed, but rather because
of the nebulous content on the lyrics and the seeming lyrical emphasis on
thought rather than experience. Songs like Alice Childress, Boxing, Best
Imitation, etc, are much more attempts at relating thought rather than
events which have affected the writer.
Compare this to Whatever and see a marked contrast. Whatever is definately
more of an experience album where the images are concrete and the lyricist
is much more interested in relating what happened ( or what has happened in
some imaginary scene) at some point in time. As examples I give One Angry
Dwarf, Brick, Selfless and many others.
This is not to say that this is a strict dividing line, but it does seem
that the albums have each taken their own direction which is even reflected
in the tone of each group of songs.

Who cares?
Might as well compare Ben and Billy Joel (Ben would love that).
For that matter we could devote our pecious time and space to comparing Ben
to any number of other well known pianists:
Ben vs Liberace
Ben vs Debbie Gibson
Ben vs Jerry Lee Lewis
Ben vs Stevie Wonder
and of course
Ben vs that kid who plays the keyboard for Hanson
The point is.............nevermind. If you don't get the point by now,
nothing I can say will help.

...regarding the question "Who is a better pianist, Tori Amos or Ben
Folds?"...
First, bonus points for Eric Patton for being so bold as to submit
such a question to such a favoring group, not unlike eating ham in a
Kosher deli. Obviously the folks who subscribe to this newsletter
might be prejudiced regarding Ben Folds Five's talent and/or skill,
and may not be familiar with Tori Amos's music other than "God" or
"Caught A Light Sneeze," and therefore respond with annoyance at such
a ridiculous question.
I must agree with Josh Kross, their two styles really are
incomparable. Tori plays mood music; if you feel like like nutty,
melancholy tunes, she's music therapy. David M, please don't be so
quick to slam a talented musician. Your answer seemed to be based on a
snap-judgement, not a careful or thorough listen. While I completely
respect all of your opinions, perhaps you haven't heard enough Tori,
or aren't giving her music a chance. Brad, is your volume all the way
down? How can you deny her musicianship; while she doesn't have the
same charachter or mode of expression as Ben Folds, she is still an
incredible pianist. And to the grandchild of Grandma Casper, thank you
for fairly considering Tori's talent. I would love to hear your
grandma jam someday.

I don't know about the rest of you but I kinda like it when bands aren't as
well known and are just followed and worshipped by a small crowd of adoring
fans. I remember when Rusted Root first came out, (if you haven't heard um
you gotta listen), they're album was the stuff. Nobody knew who they were,
except their die hard fans. Then, they got airplay and people started to come
to shows to see that one hit song. Kinda like Dave Matthews. If you've ever
been to a DMB concert, you'll know what I'm talking about. Rusted Root ended
up selling out to the mainstream in their second effort. I think we should
let it be and respect the music of BFF, and if others don't listen and don't
get it then hey, their loss. I think I read a review about a BFF show once
where the reviewer said the under 16 year old crowd just turned him off to
the music. (Obviously not a real BFF fan). Anyways, sorry about the long
post. Just airin the old brain. Chill.

tape their favorite bands....has anyone who has attended a show already seen

on the other show they only played one song:

so the answer to your question is no they did not play any material on the
non-headlining show that they didn't play on the headlining show.

This message is in MIME format. Since your mail reader does not understand
this format, some or all of this message may not be legible.
I recently bought the yellow "Kate" import single. The sticker on the
front lists "Bad Idea" and "All the Beautiful People" as the b-sides,
but the inner label lists "Mitchell Lane" and "All Shook Up", which is
what's actually on the CD. I thought it must have been a simple
mistake until, upon further review, I realized the sticker has the
same UPC number as the CD + the rest of the packaging. Quite the
imported collector's item! I thought with all the previous discussion
of the b-sides to "Kate", I'd include this trivial little anecdote!
BTW, I never heard an answer as to who the girl on the single really
is, if not the real Kate.

I don't want to burst the bubble of what sounds like a nice memory, but I
think you are probably remembering the corner of Rosemary & Columbia. That's
one block from the heart of town here in Chapel Hill, and Rosemary and Cameron

just for all of you that might care, i found an article written by Kate Folds
in this zine called Cake. she talks about being married to Ben and there are
a couple pictures of them together. they are the cutest couple!
as for the Ben vs. Tori debate....
how many people on this list can play the piano? i mean really play? if you
can, then you can say who's better. i hate it when people say "oh yeah, so
and so's a really good guitarist/drummer/bassist/whatever" when they can't
play an instrument. if you have no concept of what it's like to play it, or
how hard it may be, then how can you judge who's better? i love ben and tori
and i hope they both just keep making good music.
