Subject: brick: one woman's view

i am interested in the recent interpretations of "brick" lyrics and how
they may or may not relate to abortion. my take on the whole thing is that
the song is probably about abortion; the fact is that an experience like
driving your girlfriend to the clinic is deeply personal and fills one with
conflicting emotions. to refer to the girl/woman in the song as a "brick"
is, in my view, entirely complimentary. she exemplifies stoicism and
strength under the most difficult circumstances.

having said all that, think of it this way; if bff wanted to write a song
that conveyed an anti-choice sentiment, couldn't they have produced some
sort of bizarre, merged version of "brick/song for the dumped"? they could
have told a story about this guy who's girlfriend winds up pregnant. she
wants to have an abortion, borrows some cash from him, and when he finds
out what's going on, ends up confronting her and yelling, "give me my
money back, you bitch!"

it will be interesting to see how this is resolved. ultimately it will
fall on the band's shoulders to explain this song...

blah blah blah

I think is actually means 'pussy' in Norwegian of something.
In the Seattle show Ben introduced it as 'my piano guy changed the legs on my piano and
made it a midget piano. This is a song for my piano guy'

In the Salt Lake City gig, Ben and Robert went on (not exact wording):

R: 'you guys have heard of punk rock for sissies right? We thought we were so cool and
in touch with our manhood that we could say we were punk rock for sissies. We were in
Norway and they misconstued the meaning of what we were trying to say. They interpreted
that we were actually the sissies playing the music. The word for sissie in Norway is
Physer, which is very similar to another word.'

B: 'The direct english translation is pussy'

R: 'They were all "physer, physer, physer"

B: 'So the moral of the story is, you can lead a band to Munick but you can't let them
talk too much.'

Garrick

Regarding the word Pyser:

pyse is a noun meaning "sissy" or "pussy", if you will ( that is the
vulgar way i remember it in my head). anyway, by adding -r to the end it
becomes plural in the same manner that we add -s to the endings of our
words. the accepted norwegian pronunciation would be like saying eeee with
your lips rounded and extended outwards. more than you wanted to know but
it gave me an excuse to finally write to this list. FYI- the norwegian
word for penis is penis.

i accidentally came across a BF5 cd earlier this year (W & EA) & i became
fanatical in a way i hadn't been since my teen years. i listen to it
everyday and while i was ecstatic to find other fans, mailing lists and
websites- it hurts me deeply to not be able to see them live. i get
tempted to unsubscribe to the mailing list due to the torturous accounts of
what i am missing out on. my next trip back to the states will be based
heavily on seeing a BF5 show. until then, i will be living a part of my
life vicariously through all of you.

Subject: Only me!

By the wonder of technology, here I am again, back after a brief
excursion home. Hello all. Hope the list is doing fine. I'll be
scouting the archives to have a look at your Shepherds Bush reviews.
NME were a tad sarcastic weren't they? About time they learned to
*review* things rather than bear grudges. Which is why I'm still in a
strop with Melody Maker, even though their review was quite
favourable, some tosser gave a bad "review" to R.E.M.'s "New
Adventures In Hi-Fi" last year. I'm allowed to bear grudges, they
aren't.

Right, Ben Folds Five stuff. Err... Well, I've got some time on my
hands at the mo, so I'll be finally getting round to adding those
articles I've been meaning to add to my web page for months. That is,
I will if I can get on the bloody server. Apologies to anyone who
has tried to access my page in the past few days who hasn't been able
to get on. I've no idea what the problem is......

And how about Glasto eh? Who went along then? I was going to, but
once I heard that BFF has cancelled I was pretty glad I didn't, even
if I did miss Radiohead... >8(

That is all. Pay a visit to my web page sometime....

Mark

p.s. Is "One Angry Dwarf" the next single? Release date yet?

Here are some more answers i thought of:
1.A complicated napkin folding that has a rather large following.
2.A children's story book about all the tings Ben can fold five of.
3.A complicated sexual maneuver.
4.The title for an origami show on PBS.
5.A 5:00 news hour program with anchor Ben Folds(not that this would be a
bad thing)

Thanks for hearing me out--Jessie
