I have been planning to attend this year's 96WaveFest, a annual concert
sponsored by the best radio station 96WAV and misc other businesses,
because it was free and featured awesome acts (past performers include
Hootie and the Blowfish, Joan Osborne, Edwin McCain, and many others).
But then, they needed to charge 10 dollars for food and some performers,
but mostly charities. I still wanted to go. Then I found out BF5 will be
there, so I am definately going! BF5 rules!

Hey everyone
After listening to the boys on the ladies lounge last night i was waiting
for them to play at Syd Uni when i turn on the tv 2day and there they r
on MIDDAY playing Dwarf. The kept in all the profanities and at the end
Ben threw his stool at the piano.
When they came back from the break all the old fogies that make up midday
had a go at them crapping on about how much aus talent there is out there
waiting to get ooon and these yankees just come in and do what they want.
Personally i was quite impressed with the whole thing and am glad they
dont change there lyrics to please a few oldies.

Actually, from what I read, not all of the dates had been announced. I
am
hoping that this means they are still coming to the MD DC Virgina area.
I
saw them last time at the 9:30 club, and they kicked ass. It was a
packed
house, so I dont see any reason why they would skip us, butttt......

Well, it so happens that I live in the MD area, and myself and a friend,
who
goes to GWU, in downtown DC, may be driving to the Philly show, if and
only
if they announce no show in this area any closer. If this happens, I
would be
more than willing to help out a poor BFF fan in need. If they dont
announce
a show in the next two or three weeks, drop me an email, and we will see
what we can work out.

Subject: BFF in Oz

Well, after lurking for an extended period of time I now have something
of substance (I think....) to write about.

The boys have finally made it to the Land Down Under.... about time.
What with appearances on the ARIAs, Lady's Lounge, Mid-day and (I have
heard a rumour) Recovery on Saturday - they are becoming regular
media-stars. Can only be good for their presence in the country.

About the radio gig - their Angry Dwarf song was very 'interesting' to
say the least - I am not sure that I liked it..... It was sung about an
octave lower (and almost spoken) than it is on the CD.... Oh Well,
anything to be able to hear them on radio.....

BFF EXPERIENCE--- I was hard at work yesterday (selling clothes to old
people *shudder*) when near the end of the day a couple came in to buy a
t-shirt and had the WAEA CD with them. I got chatting with them and they
are going to the Perth concert.... At least there will be 3 of us!!!!!!

Another One- I have just found out that about a quarter of the cast of
the play that I am doing are going --- freaky!!!!!

Anyway - enough of my rambling....... only 5 more days till I see them
live......

Until I next feel inclined to post.....
Adam from Oz

Subject: Sloan - non BFF content

Hi, getting caught up on a lot of old digests that were sent to my school
account over the summer and caught a post about Sloan. This is for anyone
who wants more information. It contains no BFF content, but I think it's
relevant in that I think Sloan's sound would appeal to a lot of BFF fans.
If you are looking for BFF content, skip this.
Back about six years ago, they released an EP, Peppermint, that I think got
them a lot of attention from record label execs. They were signed by Geffen
and full album called Smeared, including a few of the songs from
Peppermint. They had a big hit with "Underwhelmed" which I think a lot of
Ben Folds fans would appreciate lyrically. It's very clever, describing a
guys relationship with his girl, and how they can't figure each other out.
The whole album is kind of fuzzy, a little distorted. Word is Geffen was
looking for the Canadian Nirvana. I would say Smeared is more Sonic Youth,
because of the noise and distortion, but it's poppy, sort of Sonic Youth
with guest songwriter Matthew Sweet. It's a great album. Their next album
was Twice Removed, and the songs were a lot less grungy, a lot more on the
pop side. Geffen apparently didn't like it because it didn't sound much
like their first one. Twice Removed was named Best Canadian album ever in
a poll of industry people a couple of years ago. They got out of the Geffen
contract and recorded their next album One Chord To Another on
murderecords, their own label

sorry, screwed up. Anyway, they recorded One Chord To Another on
murderecords, which was the record label the band had started up to release
their debut ep. It came out last year. In the States, it came out four or
five months ago on The Enclave. For the American release of One Chord...
they added the "Party Album"(a la the Beach Boys) - live cuts and cover
songs. All three of their albums are great. Like the guy who wrote the
original post, they're really friendly guys. Halifax isn't a big enough
town for them to think they're big huge rock stars, but they're local
heroes to a lot of bands and are credited with focusing attention on
Halifax and the Maritimes as a vibrant music scene in Canada. Eric's Trip
is another band (they recently broke up, alas) from the Maritimes, Nova
Scotia, who I think have a bit of a following in the US.

Sorry about the long non-BFF content, but I warned ya...

Hi everyone this is my first post so I won't bore you all. I have got a
little problem, you see I'm going to the livid festival in Brisbane and
they have put my two favorite bands on at the same time. BFF and the blood
hound gang. I was writing to get leters from people who had seen Ben and
the boys live to tel me what to expect, as I'm not sure which I will see,
I love them both.

Also does anyone from Brisbane have a tape of the ARIAs from monday as I
forgot it was on and I really wanted to see Ben.

Thanks for listening to me ramble.

While I'm glad for the exposure they'll get from the Kerri Ann gig, I
have to wonder whether it's really their scene... Hard to imagine it
being ANY cool band's scene, actually. The grannies wont know what hit
'em! (hope they sing "Fuck you too!" really loud....that'd scare the
producers!..."But I thought they were a NICE band...") Still, I'll be
taping it - and thanks for the warning from the armchairers of
Australia!!

Their two song set on the ladies' lounge was pretty good (despite the 45
second interview in which Ben and Helen didn't really hit it off
linguistically: Ben = "I don't know too many big words" Darren/Robert =
"The biggest word I know is analog", Elle made patronising remarks, and
the boys made surreal comments the whole way through). SONG FOR THE
DUMPED was particularly cool; I hadn't even heard it before...what a
trip; love the five....."Give me my money back..." how cool do they want
to be? (guess I have to hear Brick now, just so I can enter into the
argument about which is better)

Cheers,

Petra

Hi,

I am so angry!!! I saw Ben on the Arias, I heard the boys play on
JJJ in the ladie's lounge .. hell, i even saw the guys rock
kerry anne Kennerly's oldies show! By the way .. they were
absolutely fantastic. Ben threw his piano stool at the piano, which
the people at Midday were not impressed about and bitched
about after they were gone, but man, I loved it!

The thing i am mad about .. is that I can't go to the god damn
Monash Uni show. If someone out there on this list would be so kind
as to get the guys' autographs and a message or something for me, i
would be eternally grateful.

please please please!!!! reply in a separate email to me please
if you are so kind :)

Subject: BFF cause controversy on Aussie TV!!

Hey there everyone!

Well, for those of you who missed it, and for those of you who are not in
Oz, BFF appeared on a show called "Midday with Kerri-Anne" today and, to
sum it up, it was a bit of a disaster.
Like I originally thought, this was kind of the wrong audience
to be aiming for, coz ... well, I guess I should just explain exactly what
happened.
The show is hosted by a lady called Kerri-Anne and there is also
like a little band that plays on the set, and they are led by a guy
called Jeff (he plays piano). It
all started fine, with Kerri-Anne introducing the boys as "an
exciting band out of America who've been getting rave reviews and hit
records around the world". etc tec. Then the boys played Angry Dwarf,
just as usual, with the "bullshit" and "kiss my ass" bits in there, and
with Ben hammering the piano away. At the end Ben picked up the piano
stool and threw it at the piano like he does at the end of the video clip.
Then they went to a commercial break and when they came back, Kerri-Anne
said "you can tell when its going to be one of those days - we just had
Ben Folds Five on the show, Jeff, and I know that you're a particularly
unhappy piano player.."
Jeff said "um.. yeah, well I don't understand why you throw piano stools
at pianos and all that stuff" Then they showed a SLOW MOTION REPLAY (!)
of Ben throwing the stool at the piano! Then Jeff said "Also, it just
seems to me to be a bit sad that there's 47000 fantastic Australian groups
trying to get onto the show and we let them on coz they're American.
Anyway enough said." Then Kerri-Anne said "well said Jeff, and I must
admit, just wantingly destroying equipment like that or attempting to for
a good bit of vision isn't really on, is it?" Then Jeff said "No, and I
s'pose the trouble is.. they'll get loads publicity and they'll say 'we
did it!'.. Anyway, lets press on with something more intelligent shall we"

So, what do you all think about that???
Just wanted to let you all know about what's going on with the boys while
they're here. I just hope they can see a funny side to the whole thing.
Sorry to take up so much armchair space
4 more days!
Jodie

Hello Folks.
I got a copy of the new "lounge-a-palooza" comp. yesterday in the
mail, I'm not sure if its out, cause this was sent to me as a reviewers copy
(I'm in the Biz..sort of) Anyways, the BF5 cut is great, and features a big
band.

Here's the line-up:
Ben - Piano, vocals
Robert - Bass, vocals
Darren - Drums, vocals
also:
The Love Sponge Strings
Todd Collins - Percussion
John Mark Painter - arrangements, horns, Muzak backing vocals, double bass
Fleming McWilliams - Opera backing vocals
S. McWilliams - yet more percussion

thats it, I dont know if the comp is out yet, you may all have it....but for
those who dont, its great....lots of other good songs as well.
