A few things I needed to mention:

1. I just heard "Tom & Mary" for the first time and all I can say is,
damn that song rocks. I've definately found a new favorite BFF song. I
just hope it's included on Naked Baby Pictures.

2. I used to think that I was hip to all the computer lingo out there
until I met my match. For the past couple of weeks I've seen something
in several messages from different people that included something: (g).
Could somebody please tell me what the hell it means because I don't
like feeling stupid like this.

3. For those of you who haven't picked up Live At Red Rocks by The Dave
Matthews Band, run out and get it now.

4. Thanks to eveyone who responded to my inquiry about TMBG.

5. There is no number five. Good Night.

cheers,
john

Hey, I am offended by your poophead comment. I would prefer to be called
a shithead if you must insist on calling names in this instance. And
what's this about "who knew Ben, BUT were poopheads", like we are cool
for knowing Ben, but we're poopheads nonetheless? Hey, I'm not that
short either...

Perhaps you wish to call us poopheads because we were in front of you or
because we decided to enjoy ourselves at the show...or maybe for some
other *invalid* reason, but as I recall you youngsters were quite little
"poopheads" while Kim Fox was on, yelling that she sucked, etc. That's
not cool, she was up there playing her heart out too, whether you liked
it or not. It's never cool to heckle a band.

I have nothing more to say on this matter because I am not one to argue.

Any other poopheads planning on being at the Philly show? Want to meet
up with a fellow poophead? E-mail me.

Just thought I'd make this addition to the list of wrong line
interpretations.

In Philosophy there's a line "look up at the skyline, at the mortar,
block and glass" but I saw it in a lyric or tab page as "and the motor
block in class". Interesting...

I'll shut up now.

RIGHT ON JLPD/SADIE!!!!!! Beck is a genius. I agree that his style may
differ from our beloved threesome, but Beck is a wonder, a golden appleseed
in our generation's musical expressions, he is a poet, he is new age
creativity, he is genius, he is Beck.
Truly, I love BF5, but Beck is right up there. Odelay!

Hey, I haven't posted for a while (thus the subject) so...

TMBG. I'll try to be as subjective as possivle, but as I think many
other BF5 fans also feel, I think they are amazing. They Might Be Giants
are really just two people, both named John, though they often pick up
different instumentalists with them depending on the recording or tour.
One John plays guitar, the other one plays keyboard and often acordian.
The last tour and CD, Factory Showroom, included a drummer and bass
guitar, along with some strings, if I remember right, and they have also
used brass. The music is best described as "different from everything
else". They enjoy very original lyrics and tunes that are also a lot of
fun to listen to. They are the type of band that acquire fans that are
almost a cult following, people really get into the music. Very few
people own only one or two CD's, they generally get as many as they can.

Emily, you rock! I loved the article, and I want a bootleg soo badly.
Christmas gift? :)

Hmm, desert Island songs: I'd have to say Underground, Smoke, and
philosophy.

BFF=R.E.M. Whoever said that is a genius. No, they're not a perfect
match, but night swimming with smoke, is just a beautiful combination.

I'm getting real depressed now. All these great concerts and I can't get
to any of them. Hey, whoever was from Notre Dame on the list, when does
that concert start? Any guesses on travel time from West Lafayette to
South Bend? Who knows, maybe if I only take half-an-hour for my math exam...

Okay, I've rambled enough.

OK

I will make this short and sweet..in a word awesome.

It's been too long since the boys were in Boston(May at the Paradise to be
exact not counting Great Woods)and they were on. I am not going to do a
songlist since there were no surprises.

The layout for the Roxy is awful. IF your not on the dance floor your
totally screwed. Besides that its ok.

Funny moments...

Robert telling Ben to F--- Off after Robert introduced Ben somewhat in jest
before Steven's last night.

Ben doing his usual dance on top of the piano at the end of the show.

I really think they enjoy New England....Why you ask...Well on this tour
they come back to Boston for the XMAS Rave for WBCN on December 2nd. The
only city they do twice(lucky us)

Well...see you guys in NYC. I have an extra ticket if someone needs one.

Cheers

Steve

Subject: Richmond Flood zone BFF, and the BECK question

Well, remember me? the guy with the cast gone to the Raleigh show. Well,
I'm off again to Richmond to see the guys one more time on this leg of the
tour. I am quite excited. this time I plan to hopefully snag a poster, a
couple of pictures (ill remember the camera this time) and a recording if I
can borrow a recorder. It wont be too high quality, but a good reminder of
the show. I'm syked to see them twice in the same month, and this time the
ride will be shorter and cheaper.

As for BECK, we'll Id have to say on stage that man has more presence,
and energy than anyone I have seen perform, and trust me I have been to a
lot of shows ranging from the largest scale to the smallest. and of all I
think beck was among the best entertainers. I didn't even listen to his
music much until the concert. He has an amazing talent as a poet in his
lyrics. (I am a poet and actually two of my Creative Writing Professors,
who are published and established American poets, use beck in the classroom
as example of surrealistic poetry.) And his lyrical talent along with his
talent on the stage make him a monumental figure in music. Example, Kurt
Kobain wasn't known for his playing ability, it was his style and his
lyrics especially that made him what he was, and he is also one taught in
CW classes. The modern poets are in music, and that talent is incredible.
Lets face it, Ben Folds is incredible, I will have seen him four times as
of Monday, but he will never be taught in college classes as a poet, or
performer. As beck already is, I'd assume that he deserves a substantial
amount of credit for it, its an achievement that many musicians will never
achieve.

Thanks for Reading
Derek

From: Mandel Ilagan
Subject: My day with Ben Folds Five

Hello Armchairites!

Well, I'm back from the Ben Folds Five concert at The Roxy and I'm a very,
very happy guy...First of all, I got a chance to meet Ben, Robert, and
Darren in the afternoon while helping a friend with an interview. What
struck me about these guys is that they were all extremely nice to us
answering all our questions and offering us food and drink from the
backstage array of refreshments.

We first got a chance to speak with Darren. I was surprised because he was
the most subdued of the three. We got to talk to him about touring around
the world and what differences he noticed about different audiences. He
told us an interesting story about Lollapalooza. We had asked him if got a
chance to meet any of the big bands that year and he told us that Metallica
basically would arrive about a half-hour in a helicopter before their set.
We also chatted with Darren about HORDE, making videos, and the rigors of
touring and what he does to unwind between shows (which includes "smoking
pot").

After our interview with Darren, we got to talk with Ben and Robert. I
asked them about the Midday show incident in Australia. Robert said that
they felt most sorry for their sound guy because he was still around after
the band finished and had to deal even more with the host of the show. We
also chatted about the Internet, bands that they'd like to perform with,
and if Ben had ever been confronted by the people he wrote songs about. He
said that he hadn't seen the real Julianne in eight years and that she
probably wouldn't even know who Ben Folds Five was.

We got a chance to ask all three of them who they'd rather fight...Hanson
or The Spice Girls. Darren chose the Spice Girls especially if it was a
mud wrestling fight, while Ben and Robert went for Hanson. Robert said
that he'd like to take on the oldest one..."the ugly one" Ben then added
that he'd like to go "Mmm...bop!" to them demonstrating the bop by throwing
some punches in the air!

It was so great to chat with them up close and personal and to see that
Ben, Robert, and Darren seem like three down-to-earth guys who want to
entertain people with their music. But that wasn't the end my little "Ben
Folds Five" day...Just hours after that came the concert!

Here's the set list:

Missing the War
Battle of Who Could Care Less
Philosophy
Selfless, Cold, and Composed
Theme from "Dr. Pyser"
The Last Polka
Steven's Last Night in Town
Fair
Brick
Kate
Jackson Cannery
One Angry Dwarf & 200 Solemn Faces
Best Imitation of Myself
Smoke
Julianne
Underground
- - ENCORE -
She Don't Use Jelly
Song for the Dumped

This was my third time seeing the band live and I have to say that this was
the best performance I've personally seen. They were really "on" tonight
at The Roxy. The vocals have improved markedly and the harmonies (most
notably on "Fair") were right on target. According to Darren, Ben is now
using a Steinway piano. I'm not sure whether it was because of the miking
or because of the change of pianos, but the piano had a fuller, warmer
sound to it. In fact, the mix was a major improvement from the last Boston
show. The other big plus was the energy. There was just great energy
brewing from the audience (the largest I've seen at a BF5 concert) and from
the band. A side thing...They've also got a great new T-shirt they're
selling. It's in the style of those late 70s/early 80s concert shirts for
bands like Journey and Lynyrd Skynyrd. On the back it says "1981 Farewell
Tour." All in all, I must say that once again, I got more than my money's
worth. These guys get better and better each time I see them!

Two final things...Did anybody DAT record the show? If so, I've got lots
of goodies to offer in exchange for copy of it! I did tape the show using
a portable recorder, but it's B-level at best. Also, I asked Ben about the
upcoming Caroline CD. He said it's due in January or February and that
"Eddie Walker" will most likely be the first track on the CD.

Hello all,
I have been a long time subscriber to the Armchair but I guess I am
just a little shy because this is my first post. And to be honest it is
really doesn't have that much to do with BFF. I am here at the University
of Georgia (R.E.M. heaven) and was not sure of the rest of the world knew
that Bill Berry retired on Thursday from R.E.M. It was a sad day here in
Athens but luckily R.E.M. will go on. They are jsut going to hire drummers
on a song by song basis and use loops and stuff. Just thought I'd let
everyone know becuase it seems like there are a lot of R.E.M. fans on the list.
I have a whole bunch of varied music tastes and I thought that I
might throw something out here for everyone to consider. I am a gigantic
Pavement fan. Whenever I listen to Pavement I am always thinking that BFF
would do a tremendous job covering them. I think that BFF could take a song
such as Range Life, Box Elder, Hit the Plane Down, AT&T, or basically
anything of Pavements and put an interesting touch on it. Then again what
do I know. I probably should have just kept my mouth shut and just read the
list. Oh, congratulations everyone who has been fortunate enough to see
Boxing lately. I have been trying for the past 2 years to see it live and
have yet to be lucky enough. One day!
