when i met robert this summer, he saw my "uncle walter" nametag and we
had a little conversation about it. it went something like this:

him: you should write "uncle plastic bitch" on you nametag. that's
what we were gonna call the band before "ben folds five".

me (being a dumbass): really?

him: no

so there you go. i think it's just something they say to people to be
funny. which it is, of course.

Greets Armchairers,

I'm putting together a mailing list which should be up in the next week.
Hopefully it will be similar to the Armchair, but with more to it. The
content won't be moderated, but with a letter of choice from you guys, I
should be able to pull together a mainstream content list. i.e. If you guys
will send me mail telling me what you'd basically like to see in this list,
I'll gear it towards that highway of info.
Thanks,

Haven't written for a while and thought I'd check back in. I picked
up a cheap copy of Verbow's "Chronicles" and am quite happy now that I will
be seeing Travis instead on Sunday. Don't get me wrong, the Verbow CD
wasn't bad - far from it. It was just listless and just overall
forgettable. At least my Travis CD, while somewhat derivative, promises an
energetic opening to the BFF show. Now if I can just find a CD by Old Pike.
If anybody can enlighten me with Old Pike info, just send it privately.
I have to thank those of you out there who months ago raved about
Belle and Sebastian's "If You're Feeling Sinister." Based on your thoughts
(and the rather favorable review in Rolling Stone) I picked up a copy of it
and have been subsequently smitten. It's just so.... soothing. I love
listening to it after a hard day.
Hope to see everybody from LA at the El Rey show! It's only
(woohoo) 3 days away! (Speaking of the El Rey, this happy camper recently
scored tickets to see Bob Dylan there too. I may have an extra ticket, so
LA area fans can mail me privately for info).

Till further notice:

The mailing list which was previously noted as soon to open is in stall
mode. Sorry folks, but after rigorous attempts at setup, my ISP has decided
to turn me into "no sir" city. i.e. they don't want me setting up a list on
their server, hence, there will be no list until I can find myself a new
home. I'll keep ya posted though.

Subject: old dog, new tricks; or, Ozzy & Ben, together at last!

Excerpted from the Thanksgiving Day New York Times:

"Sony CD Site Takes a CalculateD DisC"
          By MATTHEW MIRAPAUL

Last week, Sony Music launched ConnecteD, a Web-based system that
enables visitors to a new area of the recording label's site to control
from the onscreen text and graphics an audio-only compact disc loaded
into the CD-ROM drive of their computers.

The first two ConnecteD titles are "Whatever and Ever Amen," the most
recent album by the Ben Folds Five, an alternative-pop trio, and
"Blizzard of Ozz," the heavy-metal classic first released in 1981 by
Ozzy Osbourne.

These are conventional audio CDs that already reside in many homes, but
with a Web browser running and some free software installed, they begin
to behave like enhanced CDs (music discs with supplementary multimedia
material).

The Ben Folds Five site supplies cut-by-cut annotation and sing-along
features, plus a simple, colorfully animated video for the song "Kate"
and a silly version of the game Pong that employs the band members'
heads for paddles.

To run, the ConnecteD system requires both the widely available
Shockwave player and a tiny 65KB plug-in application [Voyager's CDLink].
The plug-in, which allows the browser and CD-ROM player to work
together, takes only a minute or two to download and activate. . . . "
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHO KNEW what extras lurked in the heart of "Whatever"!? It takes a bit
of busy work to get this thing to work, but it's pretty cool.

if you don't have the latest shockwave, you can access it from the
cdextra site (www.cdextra.com/ConnecteD/) (or go directly to
www.macromedia.com). click "troubleshooting," which points you in the
direction of shockwave and the "CDPro" plug-in extra, which is also a
must to use this feature. AND you need the CDLink, which is at
http://www.voyagerco.com/cdlink/

after you download all the plug-ins, you have to quit out of yr browser,
load the new stuff, and re-launch. then slap "whatever" in your rom and
head back to
http://www.cdextra.com/ConnecteD/

after jumping through the technological hoops, you get what the times
mentioned: the interactive "Kate"; scrolling lyrics for all 12 songs (w/
a few audio intros from ben); the pong game (a truly one-sided affair);
and "(not-so) true confessions," with musings from ben about the quality
of sanitary facilities on the rock & roll road, robert talking about
smelling bad and hating styx, and darren admitting a lack of sexual
experience.

big multi-media fun. patience rewarded, eventually.

TIMEZONE CRAP:
Seems as though everyone's divided on the subject of Aussie times in
relation to US ones over this online concert thing. Some people are
saying 3pm for Sydney, others are saying between 12 and 2 am, and that
time zone calculator told me it was about 5:30. Aaaaaagh...time to call
Optus, Yes!

HOMEPAGE FOR THE DUMPED:
Why can I never access this page?? Is it just me? I know it says "best
viewed with Netscape 3.0" but surely that's only a recommendation? Its
summary looks so enticing - "lots of pics!!" yet every time I click on
that 'enter' button all I get is a weird pop up window that seemingly
serves no purpose. Could someone help me, I would really like to access
those pics.

and lastly, A MERCHANDISING IDEA FOR THE BOYS:
how about a petite book a la 'life's little instruction book' called
'The Zen of Ben' filled with quotes from the man himself. The first
entry could be "PENIS A! PENIS A!" :)

Cheers,

Petra

Okay.. to avoid everyone else mailing me about this.. heh big mistake.. I replied to
handsum dan .. continuing to refer to BOWCCL as whatever and ever amen as he'd
done.. somehow it completely escaped me that I was referring to the wrong thing so that
looks pretty dumb considering that I was correcting him about BF5 information.

Its kind of hard to like one band and not the other. BFF is alot easier
to listen too, as some TMBG takes a trained and dedicated ear to listen
too, as anyone who ever listened to Apollo 18 with their CD player set to
Shuffle, with little bits of "Fingertips" all over the place. Both bands
are exceptionally talented at having fun, and making their listeners have
fun. BFF is a little bit better at the emotional though.
Go out and by "Unsupervised" the CD by Monopuff, John Flansburgh's( from
TMBG) side band...Its quite exceptional...

DEar Armchairites,

Well, as I was flipping through a Martha Stewart (don't think I'm stupid) mag
trying to find out how to wrap a Christmas gift so it's pretty ( I like
pretty gifts) I had my walkman on and BFF in it. Well, I like had a
realization when listening to my fave song Evaporated and it just popped into
my head how much i LOVED Ben, Darren, and Robert. I mean, I have never met,
seen in person, or on televison any of them. All I have is fuzzy pictures. I
just had this feeling like I loved them sooo much. I love this band!!!!!!!!
They are so great. They are my favorite band and I probably will feel that
way for a long time. Does anyone else feel like this? Probably, because
you're here. But I still don't know where to get this fucking wrapping paper
Martha has, and where the hell do I have antique ribbon lying around?
 AHHH!!!!! What the hell,

Lucy

P.S. If I had Ben teach me one song, it would be cigarette
