Black? Anne, you must be spreading a bad rumour, I tell ya! Ben would =
have got his way with Turquoise, 'cause even though Darren knows Karate =
( that was a joke ) The Sledge would just hit him with his bass, but =
then Ben would just throw his piano at Sledge. That said, I'm partial to =
the hot pink too...

I know this is late too, but the girl playing Uno at the concert? Well, =
uh, I'm not sure what you mean when you say that killing Ryan was an =
omen? Thanks.

Not long to go till THE day when I break up from school... and more =
importantly, I go see Ben Folds Five! I just got news that the schools' =
Battle of the Bands concert takes place the same day, which is a shame, =
but I wouldn't miss Ben Folds' Five for anything! Meanwhile, I have an =
idea-what say we all 'phone up the Jukebox in London on the Tuesday =
before requesting Kate? That'll be fun...

Hey guys,

I haven't read the armchair in a while, so apologies if someone has already posted this.

There is a one page article on the band in the December edition of Australian Rolling Stone (with Courtney Love, Tina Turner and Madonna on the cover) entitled 'The Piano Men'. It's on page 30 if you just want to have a look at it in the shops. Nothing mind blowing - just the usual with the now somewhat standard blurb about the Midday Show and Jeff Harvey .... ah well, still makes me laugh! There's also a rather 'tired' looking shot of Ben with John McCrea from Cake in the Livid write up.

Cheers

Subject: Finally! LIVE

I was sooo excited. I turned on Jenny McCarthy and remembered that BFF were
once on it. I hadn't ever seen it, so I was hoping to catch it one day. But
anyways, I had NEVER seen BFF live. NEVER. When they came on I FREAKED out.
Robert started talking about Japanese toilets and Ben said something like,
"I don't know. what about you darren?" and he's like "I don't know. what
about you ben." They are so precious. They played OAD+200SF and I just about
died. WOW. I noticed three things:
1. Robert is REALLY hot
2. Ben is hot but balding (they had an over-the-head cam that revealed
something missing).
3. They played it FAST.
I don't know if they always play that fast or with that much energy, but I
was wondering how the performance on this show competes with other shows.
The vocals were kinda drowned out and Jenny's poor piano (It's probably not
hers)!!! Ben really banged on it hard. I noticed his wedding ring (what is
the status on the couple, can anyone tell me, FOR SURE?), and said, "Aw, Mary
*my sister* Ben is wearing his wedding band!! That's so cute." Ben had this
cute green shirt on and a sweater over it...awwww..........
I love him.
Darren looked good too.
Well, that's enough of THAT!!!!!

Subject: Restaurants

Well boys and girls...I too have something to add about BFF in a restaurant.
Tonight while I was at the local Friendly's, which has become a hang out for
my friends and myself, my friend called my attention to a song they had
playing. Lo and behold it was "Brick," I nearly choked on what was in my
mouth. Now I'm wondering, is this a good thing? I mean, it shows that
obviously they're gaining popularity, but being played at Friendly's? Plus,
to add to what I see as a horrid situation, the song played immediately after
"Brick" was Debbie Gibson's "Lost in Your Eyes." I nearly died.

Subject: First Post - So what!

To tack onto the "I wish brick wasn't popular" vein, I have to relate a little experience that I'm sure no one will really care less about. About a month after WAEA came out I was driving to work (AT&T) and listening to my three songs - I always have time for three songs and a cigarette between my house and work. As I turned down the outer service road that leads to the massive campus "Brick" came on the CD player. I don't know what happened but the moment must have got me 'cause I just felt extremely overwhelmed by the song, not so much the exact happenings, but the emotion and sentiment. The song was just about over when I pulled into the parking lot and I just sat and listened to the end of it, thinking what a sissy I was. That made me laugh at myself and I tell you what, I had the best damn attitude going in to work. And you know what is whack-ass? I'll be driving down the road listening to the radio (or at a restureant, or a bar, or a store, or on a plane, or in th!
e middle of the god-damn desert) and hear "Brick" and think, "What a silly song. What asshole writes a sad song with tuba sounds in it?" but I still can't help but get goosebumps.

lucy

p.s. Courtney? I am planning on taping the ElRay show tomorrow. If I get a good enough dub I can make some CDs.

Subject: Naked Babies, etc.

Hey folks,
This is my first post to the list. So far, the digests have been kinda
long but not uninteresting... except for that Thanksgiving guy, who's
hopefully choking on a turkey bone as I write this.
"Emaline" with or without guitar makes no difference. I just hope the
studio version holds up to the live one... still one of my favorite BF5
cuts. BTW, if any guitarists out there aren't sick of "Brick" yet
(perhaps 'cuz they live in a radio wasteland like me), Ben's piano part
translates really well to guitar. Just use a standard open G to C
change.
Personally, I'm really forward to Naked Baby Photos to hear "Eddie
Walker," since I know the real Eddie and he's a swell guy. Last time I
saw him, we were discussing the out-of-print "Jackson" 7-inch and
agreeing what a travesty it was that he--the B-side namesake--didn't
even have a copy yet. (Of course, I didn't have one either, but that's a
different travesty.) Curious folks might also want to track down the Bus
Stop CD A Little Faster, as well as the new self-titled disc from Snuzz
(the former Bus Stop guitarist) for the similarly-named "Eddie."
And finally, a few questions after all the rambling: Does anyone know
details about the "Not-So-Acoustic-Christmas" featuring BF5 in
Charlotte, NC on Dec. 5? Other bands? Set length? And where the hell is
Dana Auditorium??

Virginly,
rICH

Just wanted to say - that the show in Redondo was pretty spectacular! This
is my first time seeing BF5 live - and it won't be my last. Short of
almost being thrown up on by a total stranger, I thoroughly enjoyed every
moment.

It was neat. (<--that's really really good in my vocab)
The stage was about 2 feet off the ground. I was on Ben's side, knees
pressed against the stage...that's how close I was. If I just lunged
over a little bit I could've gotten a hold of a piano leg.
My nametag said Emaline on it.
I was yelling out "Emaline" (I knew it wasn't on the setlist)
They played Emaline. Ben heard me :) I was only, what 4 feet away from
his right ear.
Ben wore red converse.
Rob told some funny story about being attacked by a flock of seagulls.
The music was awesome.
I met them afterwards and I got my setlist signed and took pictures and
gave them the drawings that my 5 year old nephew drew of them. Ben
really liked his.
It was neat.

Still recovering,
Janet.
See you guys at the El Rey and of course, Mel's Diner.

Subject: san francisco show memories...

because we live in such an insta-nostalgic age, i figured it's ok for me to
get a little misty reminiscing about something that happened 2 days ago! :D
so silly...

anyway, it was a great show obviously, it is our favorite group, but i guess
i'll just miss the days of a smaller, less abusive-n-crowded venue. but since
i am young go-getter, i still had a great spot right in front of ben and i
could see robert well but i just couldn't see darren without breaking my
neck. i am still amazed, although proud, that it was sold out.

so one if the highlights for me came at the end when i was chosen out of
about 4 other people hoping for the set list and Joe (i aksed) the stage tech
gave me the one taped underneath ben's little piano stool. it's a gorgeous
white typed sheet o paper framed in brilliant red gaffers tape, it now hangs
on my wall next to the "Really Rosie" and "Spearhead" posters. It reads:

San Francisco/ Pyser/ Battle/ Philosophy/ Selfless/ Missing/ Polka/ Steven/
Fair/ Brick/ Kate/ Jackson/ Dwarf/ Best/ Smoke*/ Underground/ Julianne /
Boxing*/ Dumped/ (not listed "She don't use Jelly" in encore w/ Dumped)

okay so the little asterisks mean the following: Smoke, was not played, if i
recall correctly, it was replaced by a request from a guy who had a friend in
the hospital who wanted desperately to hear Alice Childress, Ben said they
hadn't played in a while but it was going out to this guy's buddy Mark. They
guy cried through a lot of it. Or at least he looked like he was. I don't
recall hear Boxing either, maybe they replaced it with Jelly, which was
beautifully done, by the way.

they rule and continue to inspire me. travis was a lot of fun also, i missed
old pike. oh well. and i met one woman who said she subscribes to de list, so
hey cindy, it was nice to meet you. :D
