i just saw ben folds for the third time, in boston. it was the "x-mas
rave" for a radio station, people probably already know this...anyway,
they opened up for catherine wheel and everclear. they were absolutely
incredible. i saw them in boston back on november 4, and they were great
then, but this show had even more energy and improv. catherine wheel was a
letdown after seeing bf5, but everclear was good too...

thy only had an hour to play, so they couldn't do a lot of my favorite
songs (imitation, fair, jackson cannery, smoke, etc.), but they did get a
pretty good set in. ben played to the crowd more than i had seen him do
before, and he was absolutely hilarious. i also got a decent amount of
pictures from the show...if they come out good, i'll post them up on my
webpage.

In response to Brad Crum's (that *can't* be his real name) post in Armchair
#669 about the airplay of "Brick" on KROQ in Los Angeles, I say we have to
think for a minute here. He asks us all to "DROP EVERYTHING AND CALL,
WRITE, E-MAIL YOU RADIO STATIONS TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT'S GOING ON, AND TO
START PLAYING BFF. THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO HIT CRITICAL MASS." I don't want
to get into an argument over one of the most tired arguments in the music
business (big time vs. indie success), but I think most of us would agree
that we don't want BF5 to "hit critical mass." I'd like to be able to
continue seeing Ben, Robert, and Darren from 10 feet away at the shows with
the possibility of meeting them afterward. "Critical mass" means Madison
Square Garden shows and the propulsion to "Rock Star" status. At that point
I don't think you would find the guys waiting around after the shows. I
hope no one misinterprets my intentions, because I'm all for the guys making
lots of money and being famous (if that's what they want.) But I think to
keep the music real, and to keep Ben and the guys real, they're best at the
popularity they're at right now.

As I said to my great friend Anthony, just this morning...thank you for being
so impressed with my way of handling Arnulf...I got a letter from him this
morning stating that he was very sorry for any complication he had caused
unknowingly and if I had anything further to say I was to respond to him.
Even though I feel awful for him having to squabble to get my appreciation
back, I still felt what he did was wrong and I know for a fact that I spent
gracious minutes of download time downloading that Arnulf was eating turkey
and he couldn't respond to my mail. I was even more displeased when I wrote
him an angry letter and I got the same turkey message in my mailbox :o< This
was uncalled for and I was quite irate, but as for now all is forgiven.
Thank you to those who agreed with me :o)!! Especially, ANTHONY!! :o)

Allright, I would like to finnaly get an ICQ chatroom that people go to
open. All the ones that are out there now I can never get into. Here is my
plan. I would like to have a chat room open to the Armchair and other BFF
fans on ICQ, this room would be open only for a certian time each week. I
was thinking Monday nights from 10:00-11:00 or later Eastern Standard Time.
this would accomodate all of the united states and my study time so that I
can be there when it is open. For those of you who dont have ICQ get it at
http://www.icq.com it is very easy to use and you only have to activate it
when the chatroom is open. This is a chance for armchair members to get
together and chat about the band or whatever in sort of a conversation hour
setting. The advantage to having a set time is that we will get more
people to show up. Sort of like a fan club meeting. If people are
interested please email me and I will set up the room and it will start this
monday. I will post the name of the room when I get enough responses and
regester it with ICQ.

From: Mandel Ilagan
Subject: REVIEW - WBCN Show

Hi everybody!

Let's start things with what seems to be a shorter version of the setlist
they've been playing recently:

WBCN Xmas Rave - Setlist:
Theme for Dr. Pyser
Battle of Who Could Care Less
Philosophy
Missing the War
Steven's Last Night in Town
Brick
Kate
One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces
Julianne
Video
She Don't Use Jelly
Underground
Song for the Dumped

This was my first time as seeing Ben Folds Five as an opening act. Now, I
expected them to play a shorter set than usual (grrr...), but I was
surprised that they pulled off a 13-song set. Even more surprising was
that their set was about as long as the headliner for the night, Everclear.

The show kicked off with a little "warning" by a DJ from 'BCN about moshing
and stagediving. Because of the recent brouhaha over the Drew
Bledsoe/Everclear incident, he said that the security at the Avalon would
be more strict about booting out moshers...Yeah, right...Fortunately, the
audience was pretty sensible that night and there was no moshing during Ben
Folds Five's set.

Ben, Robert, and Darren were all dressed up in this brownish-beige color
much to Ben's own surprise. Ben kicked things off by saying that they had
just arrived from L.A. While the guys didn't pull off as polished a
performance as at The Roxy, they didn't seem tired like their Paradise
performance from June. In fact, the band was more playful onstage this
go-round. Robert did some weird moves with his bass, Darren made those
cool looks with his face while drummin', and Ben was a madman. He
especially did some insane stuff for "Song for the Dumped." Before the
song he asked the lighting guys to go crazy with the smoke machines and the
lights which they did to some extent. He then closed things with his
"heavy-metal" routine. I've seen him do this before, but last night he
just went ballistic! He kept screaming like Robert Plant and slammed down
his microphone stand before doing one final throw of the piano stool to the
keyboard.

My only there was quite a bit of chatter in the audience during the slower
songs. Maybe a couple more upbeat number like "Jackson Cannery" or "The
Last Polka" could have perked up the ears of the non-BF5-ites in the crowd.
But then again, Ben had said that they were on a tight schedule and really
couldn't break away from the planned set.

All in all, it was a fun show and a great way to end a wonderful year of
Ben Folds Five concerts! I can't wait to see what '98 will bring for these
guys...

      That's blasphemy!
      It's sacriligious!
How could you possibly compare our boys to the Gallagher brothers? No
offense to the British on the string, but sorry, I don't see the connection.
One band is a sell-out from Manchester, and the other is...well, sheesh, don't
you see where I'm going w/ this?
I used to be an Oasis fan, but I can no longer stand them, and I'm
still not sure why. It's probably got something to do with the fact that every
song sounds the same.
Variety and difference are qualities narrowly found in few; Ben Folds
Five was talented enough to entertain that.
By the way, did the Five attend UNC at Chapel Hill?

I actually like "Slide Away," and that's about it.

I was at the lawrence show on the 19th when i noticed a remarkable diffrence
from the Liberty Hall show a year ago: the crowd was younger. The Lib. Hall
show was a mostly college age group, so you could imagine my distain.

The crowd was horrible!! One 15 year old behind me kept saying "Maaaan, i
wanna fuck the life outta him!"(referring to ben)
I can handle a crowd that is mostly new to the band, but 90% of them had 9:30
bedtimes!
This is the problem with their success. The teenyboppers hear it and decide
to tear down their hanson posters and put up poorly-scrawled "i love ben"
signs written in multi-colored markers on notebook paper.

also, the band seemed to be phoning the show in. Except for the "Danny
Manning is My Neighbor" and the jabber about "heart", the show was delayed
too long by Old Pike (altho Travis rocked). The show was half that of the one
a year ago and really makes me wonder what the audience will be like in 5
years.

next concert should be 18+, dammit.
