<<Hi there.

I'm writing from Wall of Sound, the online music mag. We've just
published a Ben Folds Five article that I think you'll dig--it's
basically Ben Folds telling us how David Letterman wanted to trim down
"Brick." Check it out--here's the url:

Oh well. This has been said before, by myself even, but I am going to
say it again.

Ben Folds Five would not appear on Mtv if they did not want to. Even if
Sony was making them, they could quit the label and sign elsewhere. They
don't have to do anything. They could have even faked sick.

Ben Folds Five would not make money if they didn't want to. They need
the cash. New pianos are not cheap. Remodeling a house to record in is
not cheap.

Ben Folds Five would not be popular if they didn't want to be. Granted
we may think that every song is great, but I think the general public
would be bored my Smoke and Selfless, and probably Fair(until they heard
any of these live). The band however has not released any of these
songs. Brick, OAD and Battle, are far more(excuse my language)'radio
friendly' tunes. In the states, I think only Kate and Steven's are left
that could possibly be singles. Maybe missing the war. Either way they
are making money because they need to support themselves. Only the few
megagroups really make an amazing living playing music. For most acts
like Ben Folds Five they make enough to live on, and not much more from
what I understand. This relates back to my last point.

All of this relates to my final point. We can't be angry at the band,
the label or MTV for that matter for making them popular. As far as I
understand, the only thing that is annoying about popularity is the the
people going around saying 'have you heard that new band, Ben Folding
Five?', and for this we can't blame anyone. The band is getting all the
exposure that they can create because they want to. I am annoyed by
people like this, but, I just show them my autographed albums, and say
hey. These could be yours if you had opened your ear to music that you
didn't hear on the radio. Show them your 'Caroline/Passenger' copy of
the debut as opposed to the second printing. Your Majosha tapes,
bootlegs etc.. There are still things that can make you a better fan. I
just hope Ben and the boys haven't compromised anything they stand for to
get where they have gotten or will go. That is what I think epitomizes a
true sellout.

Ok, this is too long. For those of you who cared to read this long, feel
free to respond, criticize, agree, etc. Just no flames. Those are
stupid. What's the point. If you can't be constructive, I'll just
delete it, and you get no message across.

Thanks,

John Boyer. Reasearch Director, Asst. Music Dir. WOBN-FM

now playing, Superchunk - 'Yeah, It's Beautiful here too.'

Hey everyone--
I saw BF5 at Lupo's in Providence for the WBRU bash and I have to say
that they are simply the best band I've ever seen live in my entire
life...they're the best band anyway. I just joined the armchair crew and it's
just so good to see others who share the same passion as I do. Some of you
have even met BF5 and I am quite jealous!!! Well, anyway...happy holidays to
all. I hope Santa or Hannukah Harry is good to you and brings lots of BF5
merchandise!!!

I just heard about the New York show as well, and Im really excited, but I
truly hope that it is not a "Live At the Ten Spot." Those shows are always
clogged up with dumb asses who don't really like the band and just want to
be on Mtv. For this reason, they sell out quite fast. So, as soon as the
tickets are on sale, im getting well prepared to secure my place. If I miss
them this time because of some asshole who wants to be on tv, I will be
genuinely angry.
