I was slightly inebriated on mulled wine (great holiday drink, folks), but
still noticed that the instrumental break before "As weeks went by..." was
egregiously short, and I think Ben trimmed a bit in other instrumental
sections. I was gald he didn't cut any lyrics. I would have had to open
up a can of whup-ass on letterman for that one. Finally, with Brick and
people worried about thirten year-olders isnging it in the mall, then
just sing Video or some other reasonably obscure tracik (to non-fans).
You can use it as a calling card when passing someone with a BFF shirt,
etc., to see if they're a "new school" or "old school" fan. That way, you
can show that you are a longtime supporter, and then share knowledge of
the eponymous disc with the newbie, and get them singing along to two
albums' worth of materila. Sorry about the typos. My terminal sucks.

CD REC: Just picked up "Live Stages" by Vertical Horizon, recorded at
Ziggy's in W-S by Alagia and Derryberry, the guys who record DMB. It's
perhaps the best live album I've heard since Clapton's 24 nights. GREAT
recording, and the jam energy on it is just cool. You can't help but get
happy listening to it. Merry Day After Christmas.

Again about the popularity...Mike said that we don't want everybody to call
themselves fans, but why not? I mean, sure, I hate how people gush over ben
fold's five and the only song they heard is "Brick", but if people really like
the music, why can't they become a fan? It shouldn't be an exclusive club
just because we discovered them first, it should be an exclusive club of
people who love Ben Folds Five for their music, not just because it's popular

I first want to gripe about the lack of Folds CDs in Northwest Indiana. I
checked Record Town, Camelot Music, Circuit City...and nothing, not even a
WAEA...that ruined my day...that and oversleeping this morning and missing
6 AM central.

Also, I'm curious when and where the St. Louis show will be held...I'm
stuck at school at that timein Southwest Indiana and that's going to be
the closest show...luckily it's a weekend though...and not like the
Tuesday night show in Nashville last semester...

sorry to bring up more bad points about live @ the 10 spot..but...i was at the
radiohead concert on 19 dec. and it was a "live @ the 10 spot" show. when i got
home from the concert, i was shocked to see what was being seen at 10 pm that
night. mtv didn't even air half the show. they started airing halfway through
the second song radiohead played. they had many commercials and came back from
one at the end of a great song called "talk show host". at one point during the
concert (not aired on tv), a camera man stopped the lead singer, thom yorke,
from starting the next song. it was very rude. also on the tape, you could see
screaming fans looking up at the camera and waving - while radiohead was
playing, mind you. it seemed as though the whole "live at the 10 spot"
publicity had drawn people who weren't really concerned with the music. i am
not saying that they should be denied the right to see the band or anything
like that...but...isn't the point of going to a concert to hear the music? it
should not be to get on tv. one of my friends was in the first mezzanine,
sitting next to a group of people who kept complaining about how they were
never going to be seen on tv because they were all the way up in the mezzanine.
is that pathetic or what? also, mtv selected the songs that were aired. they
just cut songs where they felt like cutting them, so the people who couldn't go
to the concert didn't get to hear the material the band selected to play, only
what mtv thought was good enough for people to hear/see.

Subject: Great Guys at Ben Folds Five Concerts

Hi everyone. When I went to the BFF concert on Dec 2 at the Avalon in Boston
with my two friends (Caitlin and Elisabeth) we were standing with these two
great guys, Dan and Dave. They were so cool and we still talk to them.
Caitlin and Elisabeth and Dan and Dave are going into Boston today but I
can't go b/c I have to work and I'm pissed! That's why work sux. Its not
fair! "But then all is fair in love."

At work when they find out I am in love with BF5 I get the response of "Oh,
they'll put you to sleep"
I get so angry because all they have heard is that beautiful song "Brick."
Ignorant stupid people. If that's the only song they know of this talented
trio (corny direct reference!) then they don't know BFF and they're missing
out big time!
The people don't even know what the song is about!!!!!!!! LISTEN TO IT!!!!
hello, ABORTION!
The public shouldn't judge if they don't even really LISTEN!!!!! to the
music. I hate when people like music just because its the "TREND"
They've "never been out in the woods alone"

I love you all, *Carolyn*

Subject: Chip in the piano...

Hey all...
I've been lurking for a while, but thought I would come out of the shadows
and say hi. My name is Lee (female, not male), I'm a junior at UNC-Chapel
Hill, and have seen BFF three times, each show being better than the last.
Actually, I'm kind of writing in regard to the last show I saw (Charlotte,
December '97) and to the person who noticed the chip in the piano on MTV Live.
During the encore at the Charlotte show, after "Song for the Dumped," Ben
got on top of the 10 foot speaker with his trusty stool and, after several
moments of tense buildup, threw it at the piano. It hit the keyboard, and as
it fell, took a large chunk out of the Baldwin. Needless to say, the crew
came out immediately after the show and did not look pleased. I just had to
laugh.
I didn't get a badass mother G.I. Joe for Christmas either, but it's okay -
I got gift certificates which I'll use for Naked Baby Photos, which I guess is
the closest thing!

Take care...
Lee

Hello folks,

I just wanted to let you know that a local magazine here in Dallas listed Ben
Folds Five as one of the 20 best rock CD's of the year. And, brick was
listed as #51 on a top 95 songs of the past decade survey from a local radio
station!!!!! Woo-Hoo. Below is what they had to say about the band:

Some people may be familiar with their latest single "Brick" the only serious
ballad on the CD, but it barely scratches the surface of the band. Sure it
combines sweet harmonies over imaginative piano accompaniment, but the appeal
of the trio is it's distinctive marriage of humor, intricate compositions,
and rollicking rock music.

Is it just me, or is "Brick" not the only ballad? These people may not know
all the facts, but atleast they put Ben & the boys in the top 10.

Toodles,

Deidre
