Quoted from original post:

Anyway, at EXACTLY 2:54 into track 9, right during a pause in the song, I
HEAR A PHONE RINGING. It sounds like a cordless phone, maybe not, but none
the less, there is DEFINITELEY a phone ringing on that track at 2:54.
Don't believe me? Play the CD over and over and turn it up, you'll hear
it!!
I dunno know why it'd be on there unless of course it just happened to ring
while they were recording the album at the house in Chapel Hill.

My reply:
I don't remember how long ago this was discussed on this board..but somebody put up
Ben's response on the matter..you're right, there is a phone ringing. And it DID
just happen to ring while they were recording. The amazing thing is that it fits in
the song...

FYI, this is true, not just apparent. However, 1ce 1 store in town
(especially a major chain like Blockbuster) breaks the street date,
everyone in town can. A little known loophole that we used to take
advantage of when I worked @ Best Buy. Seems like Wal-Mart was always
breaking street dates.
Interesting side note, Pearl Jam's new one hasn't even been released yet
& I'm already sick of that feckin' song. Perhaps it's just because I
live in Seattle & they overplay it much, much more than Brick. Buying
my copy of NBP today & am greatly looking forward to it. 5 February @
DV8 rapidly approaches...:-)

  Hi guys!

  Sitting comfortably?

Ok...NBF. Fantastic. It appears to be going down well over here as the
only people who buy BFF are hardcore fans. This is probably due to the
fact that there hasn't been a real 'success single' over here like
Brick. They don't receive as much airplay so the fan base is not diluted
by new fans. To me NBF rocks! Especially Emaline and Twin Falls.

Oh by the way, will you shut up about SNL. The fact that we didn't get
to see it makes it worse.

here's something I'm very curious about...
Is the version of Eddie Walker on NBP the same version from the Jackson
Cannery 7", or a later version from the first-album sessions?
'cause if it's a newer version, then my years-long vinyl hunt must
continue... ^_^

Subject: nice review & lyrics question

This morning was *supposed* to be terrible. I had to get up at 7, walk to
my boring theatre tech. lecture in the FREEZING Minnesota cold, and try not
to fall asleep for 50 minutes. Imagine my surprise and *intense* good humor
when I opened the Minnesota Daily (student paper) A&E section and found a
review of NBP! :D It's kind of long, so I'll give you the highlights:

"On the premise that it's never too early for a career retrospective, Chapel
Hill wunderkindred Ben Folds Five here compile a number of unreleased tracks
that otherwise, for good or ill, might have been subjected to the bulk
eraser."

"The best parts are the tracks Caroline cut from the group's debut:
"Emaline" and "Tom & Mary" are both sweet and gentle with memorable
choruses. It's possible that they might have sullied the raucous tone of
the first record; still, I'm glad th see them rescued here."

The reviewer goes on to express his desire to see "Video Killed The Radio
Star" and "Cross Town Traffic" on the record, because they "were what
made BFF shows so damn much fun." Finally, he ends with this sage comment:

"It's not exaclty one for the ages, but the good humor it exudes is
refreshing; many bands woudl have waited years to share material this
unseasoned with thier audience, by which time the joke wouldn't have seemed
quite so funny."

well, I don't know 'bout the Tom and Mary thing, but otherwise this guy
knows his stuff. He talks BFF up a lot more in the rest of the reveiw. The
only problem is, he refers to the album as "Naked Baby PICTURES" 3 times.
hmmm. . . musta been the editor.

Sorry for the long post -- If any one wants a copy of this (pretty
insightful) review, I snagged a few and can mail them to you.

ps in Emaline, is it "Summer Champagne" or "Some one should pay" ?
I always tought it was #2, but online it says #1.

In #754 Darrell said he couldn't find one copy anywhere. I
sympathize with the man. My friend went to several stores
and has told me that the only place that had it was circuit
city and they only had one. Luckily he bought it for me
because I was in school, but it's apparently pretty hard to
find.

Personally I respect the band for not hyping it and trying
to promote it as their "New Album" during all this
pheneomenal Brick success. They have sent out very few
copies and hopefully that will ward off some of the
wannabes. When they can't find it, they'll just decide to
go spend their money on a Sugar Ray CD instead.

I'm sure that if you have no success in stores you can
always order it from CDNow.com, but the week you have to
wait for shipping would be excruciating.

Even though I wish Hava Nagila off the Underground single
(correct me if I'm wrong) was on there, it still rocks.

No Sarah, it just means you'll be a one name wonder. Like Cher or
Madonna. What company eh? You'll be something like "Peachtree" or "Elm."

That's brilliant.

I love NBP. Not liking it because you had already heard the songs isn't
valid unless you didn't like the songs the first time. Some quick notes:

Ultimate Sacrifice - If you don't like this because it's stupid, you
don't get it. It's a joke. A wonderfully executed parody.

Eddie Walker - Nothing to say. This song is incredible although I prefer
the less-rocking version some of you have
probably heard from early demos.

Bad Idea - I love this thing. I couldn't believe when I heard people slam
it. That's cool and all but I think it is a great, driving,
short and to the point gem.

Dick Holster - I agree it would be nice to hear this fleshed out more.
But it jams for a little while.

That's all. See those who can be there at Clutch Cargos. By the way,
although wearing nametags with "uncle walter" or something to the shows
might be silly, it made it possible for a bunch of us to meet each other
in Ypsilanti. I'll do it again.

okay, haven't posted in over 6 months, in fact haven't read it in that long,
but i have hundreds of posts waiting to be read, and after reading a few of the
latest ones, i've decided i haven't missed much more than a bunch of whiny,
know-it-all, "ultimate fans". just my opinion, but i have talked to a few who
agree...

> "Brick"! I just wanted to cuddle Ben after it was over. He looked so ill
> and upset and just generally hurting throughout.
it's a sad song. do you really think it would go over any better if he were
dancing around and throwing stools and such? that would be ridiculous, and
anyone watching would get really confused. i think that by looking as they do,
they authenticate the feelings expressed in the song.

> First of all they only played one song, and i thought that was strange.
> Second of all the acoustics were terrible. The drums were really loud,
> and you couldnt hear Rob's bass at all, Ben's voice was about the same
> sound level as the piano. It was kinda strange.
thank you for pointing out something worthwhile! the sound sucked! the
bass,(not "base" as someone wrote earlier) dropped out quite often in the song,
and what was with the weird tone in the slow part of the middle of the song????
i have my theories, but i'd rather find out first hand. ps if the upright had
been turned around to their normal "live" facing-each-other positions, ben
wouldn't have been able to see either of them, the piano was too tall.

> But i was just wondering: is there something you don't like with BFF ?
yeah, the way these postings end up! and the way i can't watch ben's hands
anymore, or have enough room to dance around because there are too many
corporate radio lemmings in the way. just a reminder...corporate rock sucks,
support your local college station, if you'd been listening, you would have
heard BF5 4 years ago!!!!

> PS= why can't Ben sing in french, it sounds great when he sings in japanese
maybe he doesn't know french. with all the touring they've done in japan, i
know he does speak some japanese, and maybe he wanted to give something back to
the fans! they're cool like that.

> In my opinion, (which means sqwat,) I don't think Mr. Folds was up to it
> that night. Call it jet lag, a stomach virus, breaking up with his girl,
> live national audience, dog died, whatever. He just wasn't all there.
you're right. this part means "SQWAT". it couldn't have been jet lag cause by
sat. night, they'd been there for a few days. and he doesn't have a dog. he's
gone too much to have any pet at home. you know i really hate the way you
people think you know what goes through these three guys' minds. most of you
only started listening to BF5 within the last year or so, maybe a few
recognized the talent when the first album came out, but i've known the boys
for almost four years, and i refuse to assume what they are thinking at any
given moment, or why something happened unless they tell me. so do us all a
favor, and quit spreading idiotic rumors about them...it just leads to a bunch
of rambling posts...uh huh, nuh uh, uh huh, nuh uh.
> My theory: He elected to do one song. Just a theory, though.
they were planning on doing 2. i don't know what happened, but i think most of
you are right, that the skits ran too long to keep the second performance in
the show. yes it sucks, but that's life. full of disappointment.
i'm sorry if i have offended anyone on this list, but instead of respond to
each silly thing alone, i've put them all together in one ranting, i apologize.

Well, the time has finally arrived. With their appearance at SNL, BFF

Subject: L.A. show tix

For the person who asked, the L.A. show has been on sale for quite a while.
Just go get them at a Ticketmaster location, or through them over the phone.
My advice is that you better hurry. =)

The website merely lists all the shows Ticketmaster are tix selling for. They
do not sell tix to ALL the shows on the website.

I guess that's about it. A good friend is treating me to the Palace show, so
I'm very happy about that. I guess he realized how much I like the band and
how bummed I was because I couldn't afford it. So I get to go afterall! I
haven't gotten the B-sides album merely because I'm broker than broke. And
I'm a college student. I guess that should explain things right there. =)

<<If the rentals come out with something on the 14th of April, when does
weezer have time to record!?>>

I'm sure the Rentals album is completed, or very near completion. The band
probably needs to mix it or finalize the artwork, that type of thing. This is
probably why the release date keeps moving farther and farther away. Perhaps
because Weezer is recording so soon for the next album.... that could be a
reason why the Rentals project is being put on the "back burner," so to speak.

Just some silly musings really early in the morning.
