Hmm, I think the important part of the liner notes was the '...if that's
what you want it to be' part... Personally, I think it's a little twisted to
think that the song is entirely about Ben's penis. Call me pathectically
analytical, but in my humble opinion the song is about...<drum roll? ok, maybe
not> Ben's philosophy. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't tell you what his
philosophy is in so many words. I think it's more like I couldn't ever see in
10 million years how it could really be about his penis. The first verse is
about a high-rise building. Go ahead, tell me I'm not looking into the song
deep enough and that there's double meaning somewhere, but to me 'mortar,
block, and glass' and singing and dancing 'about a high-rise' have nothing to
do with anyone's genitalia. Then, you might say, 'well what about his helmet
head?' Well, try 'helmet *hat*', which sounds similar, instead, and again
we're talking about a building. Torch=light perhaps? I'll never truly
understand, I'm sure, and I could go through the whole song but that would be
boring...<shrug> If this is going to open the proverbial can of worms that
shouldn't be opened, by all means ignore this, I hate to cause problems =)
Regardless, I'm going to get going now so this can stay relatively
short...take care =)

Heck, that must have been one hell of a night last! I know I was
pretty drunk, but did I really sleep for two years? And still had a
hangover?

I would also like to start up a club for all those of us who have
never, EVER, thought that the phone in Steven's Last Night in town
was actually our own phones. Am I the only one? Call me a hardened
cynic, but.....

Lastly, I don't know if it got mentioned before, but "Brick" is out
as a single in the UK in early March, according to Ben, and they'll
be over here for some promo work. Ace! (Now, there's an exclamation I
haven't heard in a while....). This info is taken from a great
interview with Ben by Dave Holloway, at:

Hey all,

Good grief come back from holidays to find five thousand armchairs
waiting for you. Its a daunting sight I'll tell you...

Anyway, keep it brief so thats what I'm doing. If you remember so many
months ago I asked for questions so I could do a fan based BFF
interview? Well I finally interviewed Ben and hit him with an awful lot of
your questions. If you wanna see the interview, head over to the newly
renamed Ben Folds Five: Helmet Heads at

questions in but my apologies to the people who's questions I couldn't use.

Thats it, bye for now

How Many Massachusites are on this list? I have seen posts from Wellesley
lately, and now people from ArchBishop Williams H.S., which is about 6
feet from my house where I grew up. (we used to play on the football
field by learning to slip through the barbed wire)
Then David Schafer emails me to say he lived in Braintree, too. I
mean, let's not ruin the ArmChair with a "hey, I live in Belchertown!"
kind of response pile, but then, would that be any more repetitive than
the SNL thing?
Either way, it's nice to see some folks from my homeland, even
though I am in my 6th year in Ben's hometown of Winston-Salem, NC. As
everyone should know, this makes me the BIGGEST FREAKIN' BFF FAN EVER. ;)
Hmm...I need some real BFF content here...okay-is "Satan is My Master"
actually a hymn called "jesus is my master?" The gospel twinge sounds too
true to be fabricated on the spot. If not, all the more brilliant by the
boys. Any insight? Discuss.

I lost the fight for my eyes,

Well, it was Ben who said he writes songs about people he knows then uses the
name of someone else he knows so no one gets hurt. I think it's fair to say
that Eddie Walker is a manifestation of this.

AND...
Has anyone ever addressed this matter...Quoting BFF? Why take up space with
quotes of songs we all already know. It doesn't make you special or cool to
quote a band on its own mailing list. However, I could be wrong. It's just
that I read it and then think, "I already knew that."

hi there,
well i just wanted to let you guys know that, according to VH1, the boys
are the featured artist on their "crossroads" show this week. But,
unfortunately, the episode airs on Saturday the 24th at 3:00 am.
(techinically that's sunday morning---so, just for reference sake, thats
saturday night reeeaally late.) so anyway, set the vcr, just in case this
actually occurs. There was no info available on what the show would
consist of but...it's worth a shot right? If it doesn't pan out, don't
blame me. That's what the schedule said.

Although I don't agree with you at all and see no corellation, I don't think it really
matters what inspires a song. After all, as is most likely common knowledge, the song
"Yesterday" by the Beatles was originally "Scrambled Eggs."

Besides, any well written song (or painting) will have different meanings for
different people - that's what makes Ben Folds Five originals so great!

Subject: NBP - finally!/Question about Feb. tour/VKTRS

Hey BF5ers ~

What's going down? After 6 days of paranoia and lack of sleep, I finally
picked up my very own, brand new copy of NBP. Man, it's great! I walked into
Sam Goody, went straight to the Ben Folds Five section, and got the last copy
they had. It was exhilarating, really. Emaline is my favorite song and I'm
glad to have a studio version of it. For Those Of Ya'll Who Wear Fannie Packs
is one of the funniest songs I've heard in a while, and Dick Holster, while
cute and entertaining, is a waste of a track (in my opinion). Eddie Walker
sounds terrific, as does Tom and Mary. Overall, a fantastic album.
I was wondering - do you all think that the February tour will be promoting
NBP or WAEA? With the release of NBP, they should throw a couple tracks from
it into their shows. But, this is still the tour that promoted WAEA - I read
somewhere that it's the last leg.
Lastly, if anyone would like a copy of Video Killed The Radio Star, I have one
on a bootleg. E-mail me privately at Roxygrrrl1@aol.com, and we'll arrange
something.

Love to all,
   Fara

Hi, I just got NBP on my trip to New York, and I think it's excellent. I
forced my friends to listen to it on the way back home to MD (side note:
i'm planning to be at the 9:30 Club show, see whoever else there), and I
can't say that they loved it, though they definitely didn't hate it.
The live tracks are definitely great, the b-sides are all a matter of
opinion I think.
On another side note, my porn star name would be Cleo Sheridan!
On another side note (all the Aerosmith talk reminded me of this) has
anyone heard the rumor that Pink is about a penis? ("Pink on the lips
of your lover"; "Pink when I turn out the light") I'm not a big
aerosmith fan, so is this old news?

Subject: Stuff

Well, this is my first real post to the list and I've got loads of stuff on my
mind. I'll try to be concise, though.
First off, how many of you are in Ohio? How about Coulumbus? Why haven't BF5
ever played Columbus? Does anyone have a true answer to that. They'd rock the
Newport like nobody else! I don't understand. When I met the guys at HORDE last
summer, I gave Ben a note inviting to my house for Spaghetti and Meatballs and
begging them to play Columbus. So now all of Ohio is being shunned?!? I don't
get it. I hope it's not my fault.
Second Question...Has anyone done a survey to compile a top ten list of BF5
songs for the list or anything like that? I'd love to administrate it myself,
but I wanted to make sure no one's done it yet. If someone did, what were the
results?
NBP - Love it, but the live versions of Emaline & T&M on the SB single are much
better, especially Emaline. Eddie Walker is great, Twin Falls is great and the
live tracks are interesting at worst and Philosophy at best. BTW, for the
Rush-hater who noted that the Ultimate Sacrifice is a Rush parody, I'd love to
know your source on that - it sounds nothing like Rush, much more like old
Judas Priest or even Manowar. Anyway, I love Rush, so don't dis bro.
Well that's all till next time.
Rock On.

This is my first post to the list, so I thought I would write a little
story. Last summer during a weekend trip to my friend's cabin where we
consumed some "adult beverages" me and my friend ( the only 2 bff fans in
our town) burst out into a singing of Underground, at the end of the chorus
my friend vomited all over himself. Just thought I'd share a little story
and the reason why Underground will forever remind me of vomit. Who knows,
maybe the same curse will fall upon you.
Can't find NBP anywhere in town and it is torture reading all the praise
about it but it is ordered. Anyways, thanks for all your time. Sabalu!
