doesn't have to do with BFF, it's off topic. The cute banter belongs in

Okay BF% Fans! The results are in from the second bracket of first round
competition here at the Ben-Bowl! The match-ups were as follows.
Underground vs Dick Holster
She Don't Use Jelly vs One Angry Dwarf...
Sports & Wine vs The Last Polka
Kalamazoo vs Song For the Dumped
Alice Childress vs The Ultimate Sacrifice
Twin Falls vs Selfless, Cold & Composed
Stephen's Last Night In Town vs All Shook Up
Missing the War vs UNcle Walter
Bad Idea (Soundtrack) vs Bad Idea (NBP)
Cigarette vs Julianne
Hava Nagila vs Emaline

And the winners are...
Underground
One Angry Dwarf...
The Last Polka
Song 4 the Dumped
Alice Childress
Selfless, Cold & Composed
Stephen's Last Night In Town
Missing the War
Bad Idea (NBP)
Julianne
Emaline

Incidentally, Underground, Emaline and Steve's Last Night all won complete
shut-outs. Also, does anyone else think the Missing the War won an upset
victory?
The closest match of that round was Twin Falls vs SC&C. Wow. What a fight!
Also, Evaporated beat Tom & Mary in the other bracket. I have to say that I was
a bit disappointed. It was VERY, VERY close though.
Anyhow, stay tuned Ben-Fans for more hard hitting action.
Judges, watch your mailboxes for the next rounds.

Hello--

My friend and I have secured two tickets for the show in NYC on Friday,
2/20--now all we have to do is get down there somehow. Anyone from the
Boston area who is going to the Hammerstein show, drop me an e-mail, and
maybe we can work something out. Sure, you'd be giving a ride to two
complete strangers, but we're all friends here on the Armchair, right?
We're just a couple of harmless college kids. Even if you're going to the
show but also don't know how you're getting down there, let me know you're
out there as well. So, in short, anyone from Boston going to the NYC show,
e-mail me!

Subject: Dave Brubeck, Joe Morello Influence?

Heya Armchairers,

Is it just me, or do the Five seem to have some sort of Dave Brubeck
Quartet sound to them. I noticed some similiarities in style in almost all of
Ben's stuff. Selfless, Cold, and Composed is really Brubeck if you ask me.
Darren plays alot of his jazzy beats in 9/8ths and 5/4ths, so I know that
he's got to have listed somewhere Joe Morello as one of his influences. Not
only, but Darren plays the exact same 60's Ludwig kit as Morello -- the only
difference being Morello's is silvery pearl white, and Jessee's is sparkle
blue. (Wahoo! I got the same kit as Darren! Oh, and those 4 pc. kits were made
specifically for jazz...or at least they had that in mind when they crafted
them so beautifully.)
If anyone has heard anything of this before, or maybe just want to start
a discussion, post it.

~Jordan Rodbell
benfoldsj@aol.com

p.s. For the musically challenged, the Dave Brubeck Quartet was a breakthrough
jazz quartet form the early 60's who gained popularity from their song "Take
Five" -- the kind of jazz you would hear in a Woody Allen movie. They were
particularily known for changing the drumming's time signature from the tiring
4/4ths time to a new 9/8ths and 5/4ths. These guys are great, and I would
recommend picking up the latest reissue CD with great liner notes, "Time Out."

Ben Folds Five
Naked Baby Photos
Caroline
rated: 4 out of 5
by Music Axis staff reporter Markie Broiler

*to hear a sample of this album, click the album cover.

Piano? What the hell is a piano doing on a rock record? Well, before bands
were brainwashed into the guitar/bass/drums/vocals regime of music, there were
plenty of pianos, as Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis would gladly tell you.
Ben Folds Five has bravely dropped the guitar and substituted the piano, an
instrument most of us remember as the thing we were forced to practice on
summer afternoons better suited for kickball games. Well, whoever forced Ben
Folds to practice the piano should be given some sort of award, because the
boy can play.

Naked Baby Photos is a record comprised of live tracks, rarities, covers, and
songs that didn't make their album. Some songs, like For Those Of Y'all Who
Wear Fanny Packs aren't even songs at all, but impromptu jams recorded while
the soundmen were out getting coffee. Other songs are ones written in the
early years of the band, like Eddie Walker, the first song Ben Folds Five ever
wrote. Live recordings include shows from London, Japan, and Amsterdam. My
favorite track on this album was Idaho Falls a Built to Spill cover recorded
in Japan where the audience didn't know when the song was over. While the
actual recording had none of the crowd noise, a bootleg from the show was
later stumbled across and the crowd noise from that was added to the original
board recording.

Overall, this record sounds like early Billy Joel. The distorted bass that
accompanies the piano is a nice touch that keeps the music from straying too
far into the desert of adult contemporary and the varied sounds on this record
keep it interesting. Ben Folds Five is getting bigger and bigger, so hurry up
and snatch this record so you can pretend you were into them before they were
cool.

Gotta add...the last line just about says it about some people. Heh...

Enjoy!

This would be the Japanese pressing of the self-titled (first) album. The
bonus track is "Tom & Mary". The rest of the album is the same. The big
difference (besides the bonus track, and probably the price) is the
program booklet, which has the lyrics to all the songs in both English and
Japanese.

I would if I could! Like a lot of other people, I have been deprived of
tickets, but if anyone knows where I can get some, I'd be a very happy
person, and generous.

Brick debate content: I hope everyone knows the real meaning of the song
by now. But here's the thought... a great tune can be relevent in many
ways. I can only imagine the number of people who have lived through
being dumped, losing a friend, whatever else, because this song has so
many levels to it. "She's alone, I'm alone, and now I know it."
Certainly not easy times, in any respect.

howdy all!

haven't posted in a while.. its good to be back! on with the post!

i think i've figgered out some of the chord progression to both
Emaline and Tom & Mary.

emaline:

i've only got part of it... the main verse progression:

G D A
i wish it was last september
                       G G
when we could lose ourselves in crowds ev'ryday
             D A
cuz emaline don't walk in time
                           G
she's not the same, thats all you can say....

as for the rest, well... its stumpin me right now.

tom & mary:

again, i've only got the main verse progression:

E A

         E A E A
for the benefit of tom and mary, before our guests arrive
         E A B7?
if they haven't found out already its gonna blow their minds....

if anyone has figured out more, please let me know.
hope this helps some people...

oh by the way, these are guitar chords. i don't know jack about piano
chords, and the piano chords involved in these songs are probably a bit
different...
