I wish that I had two VCR's so that I could share 120 Minutes with everyone
who missed it...I kinda feel guilty for taping it! (I'm Catholic...it's a
habit) You know the extent I went to tape that puppy? I stayed up until 4 AM
JUST to make sure that I caught BFF...all my friends thought I was nutso, but
I made it through school and was lucky enough to not have soccer
practice...but I digress. In a post from MA # 841, someone wrote:

So, i'm sitting in english class today, and this very annoying trendy dirty
girl infront of me turns around and says:

Dirty Girl: Jason, do you like Ben Folds Five?
Me: Yes.
Dirty Girl: Did you hear their NEW song on the radio?
Me: If you're going to say "Brick," i'm going to stop responding.
Dirty Girl: Yea.. why?
Me:
Dirty Girl: What??
Me:
Dirty Girl: You bastard!!!

All is true except the bastard part.. she just gave up. Ugh. What's my point?
Well, one.. Brick isn't new, so i would like to punt this girl into tomorow's
sewer. Second, well, i dunno.. i could make some bitchy comment about the
popularity of the song, but there seems to be enough of that around here, so
i'll just leave it at that, and hope you all enjoyed the frightening view into
my 4th period english class. :) See ya!

I was reading all of these posts about BFF TV appearances, and I have most of
them and would be very willing to make copies, but I have NO IDEA how to do it
without two VCRs! Can anyone help me out here? E-mail me at FieryLox@aol.com
if you can...

Also, someone posted about B, R, and D looking tired...yesterday I found my
copy of the Uncle Walter video ("Girlfriend In A Coma" ended up being on 120
Minutes that week, too!) and as I was watching, I couldn't help but notice the
significant change in Ben Folds' appearance...don't get me wrong, I'd love Ben
even if he grew one of those gross thin moustaches, but it was WEIRD to see
how much he's aged in just two years. And Uncle Walter is such a funny video!
Robert and Darren in skirts...I laughed for, um, minutes! Watching this also
made me realize how boring BOWCCL and Brick (although that one's
understandable) are in comparison. I mean, BFF are hilarious guys! What
happened? Potty Mouth was, actually, quite laughable, too.

Toodles!
Sara

P.S. "Emaline" has been stuck in my head for the past few days, and a thought
hit me during one of my routine out-of-tune singalongs...is Emaline a horse?
Think about it: "Cause Emaline, don't walk in time..." "Does she know what
they're sayin" all that stuff about money (horses ARE expensive) "Sometimes
I don't know what she's saying" "I'll take you down to see my Emaline"(why
would he "take someone down" to see a girl?)

Subject: Fear Of Pop

Hey all! This is some pretty nifty info from Allstarmag.com - I don't know
how long they archive these things, so I decided to reproduce it here. I
hope nobody minds. :-P

<<
Now that Ben Folds Five are enjoying breakthrough success with their first
real hit "Brick," you'd think group leader and namesake Ben Folds would
continue to focus on group efforts, to strike while the iron's hot.
Instead, he plans to focus on his first side project, a collaborative
effort between himself and BFF producer Caleb Southern called Fear of Pop,
whose self- titled album will be released later this spring on 550 Music.

But anyone expecting Folds' traditional melodic, tightly structured pop
might be disappointed. For one thing, Fear of Pop is entirely instrumental
- -- save for a few non- verbal vocals. "For the most part, it's sort of
noisy and dissonant," says Folds of the project, "but then it gives way to
big 'aahs' and choruses, and there's a lot of electronics and synthesizers.

"There's also little guest things going on," adds Folds. However, aside
from Southern, his management company would only say that "none of the
guests are well- known."

"We had little ideas for spoken word stuff here and there," Folds
continues. "Someone told me that they heard it and that it sounds like this
band called the Propellerheads, but I don't know who that is."

Although Fear of Pop might first appear to be a solo album -- because it
doesn't include Folds' bandmates -- he prefers to think of it differently.
"It's not exactly what I would call a solo record," says Folds. "It's a
little more anonymous than that. My idea of a solo record would be, 'Okay,
me and the guys in the band don't make music together anymore, so my outlet
for my songs is hiring guys for what would basically be a more mature
version of what the band does."

Folds says that Fear of Pop is roughly comparable to Archers of Loaf singer
Eric Bachmann's solo project Barry Black, on which Folds guested a few
years back (they're both from Chapel Hill, North Carolina). "It's like Eric
did with the Barry Black record, where you have a lot of ideas for
different textures and sounds, but it's not really responsible to throw
them around on music that two other people have to be associated with," he
explains. "So instead of making them sit through a recording where I start
to, like, distort all their instruments and do something they never
intended, I get to do it to my own stuff instead."

Where can I buy/trade/find these four Ben Folds Five Videos:

Underground
Uncle Walter
Battle of Who Could Care Less
One Angry Dwarf

All have premiered on MTV's 120 Minutes, which the band has also hosted a
few times.

For trade, I have videotapes of a couple BFF appearances on television, as
well as a videotape of their Chicago concert webcast a few weeks ago.

Please send responses to me directly at 777jet@bigfoot.com. Thanks.

"The post about nail polish might not have been that interesting, but at
least it had something to do with BFF, unlike your own tirade, which was
completely inappropriate for the forum."

Peter: And why was it inappropriate? I'm trying to help someone. Come on
now, anyone who cares what colors Robert has put on his fingernails has a
serious case of over-infatuation and needs to snap out of it. I love the band
more than anyone - they seem like mighty fine individuals and their fantastic
music is, of course, what brought us all here, but when you cross the line of
enjoying the music to its fullest and into obsession with trivial information,
that's when you've got to start wondering if you've got a problem. And I do
say OBSESSION with trivial information, as there is nothing wrong with
discussing information about the songs or the band which may be entertaining,
interesting and/or amusing. But when we start going into colors on Roberts
fingernails that where I'm afraid I have to draw the line and start slapping
people around. I'm sorry if I offended you, but it's time we clean up the
list a little bit. (Although I guess I should just count my blessings that
we're finally over our bout of 50-posts a day about Saturday Night Live.)

Subject: Ben's divorce

Okay, everyone. I respect the fact that everyone here really likes Ben
Folds Five. My problem is that people have begun to bring the boys'
personal lives into the Armchair...in specific, I'm referring to the
discussion of Ben and Kate's divorce. I believe Ben's brother Chuck
addressed this in an earlier Armchair, but it seems to me that if we are
true fans, we should be respectful enough of the boys to leave their
personal lives out of the public spotlight. With all due respect to my
fellow Ben Folds fans, lets keep our focus on the band and their music,
not on private issues that we know really nothing about.

Thanks

Adam DeLisse

hello i am new. i really like ben folds five and have since underground
and uncle walter. so dont worry not a brick head. to the person asking
about bens marriages, it says it in the new music cmj magazine that they
were just separated but i dont know about impending divorces. but its not
really suprising because according to ben he cant stick with anything and
the band is the one thing he has stuck to ever. and 'kate' very
suprisingly for me, is NOT about kate folds. wierd huh. thats what they
say in the cmj. wierd. oh and the brick girl was his senior year of high
school so that was a long time ago and i understand why they arent
together, i mean abortion is a big crisis to go through and not too many
high shcool relationships are that sturdy to make it after that. i mean
not even a lot of adult relationships can handle that.
i feel really wierd talking about bens personal life though. you know, like
the music and the person but i feel like im prying even though he said all
that stuff.
oh and to the nail polish person i agree with you but no need to be mean.
OH and the cmj cd with a different version of "smoke" is cool. it was a
really neat thing..since it was only $5 for a cd of a new bff song, and a
really nice article and some good pics.

well now that i have broken in my little space on this list, i must go.

this is my story both humble and true, take it to pieces and mend it with glue.

Hi hi hi,

Those of you tuning into the Radio 1 Breakfast Show will have heard
Chris Moyles playing Brick as his Record Of The Week!. And I've come to
the conclusion that Brick is not a radio song and he should redress the
balance by playing Jackson Cannery for the rest of the week...Anyway, he
mentioned that the single will not be out until "the end of the
month"... :(((( . Does anyone understand why Sony seem to be completely
incapable of putting out BFF singles when they are supposed to?? I'm
sick and tired of running along to record shops, asking them if they've
got the new Ben Folds Five single in and getting blank looks in
return... Aaaaanyway....

Talking of Brick, I had an email the other day.....

>Dear whoever you are,
> I was watching MTV when suddenly I heard within the moving melody
>of Ben Fold Fives "Brick" when I realized that it sounded a whole lot
>like Cat Stevens, "Where do the Children Play" from his Tea and The
>Tillerman album. I was pretty appalled at the blatant rip off. This
>song "Brick" should be scuttled big time and the band admonished if not
>publicly reprimanded for such plagarism.
<--snip lots of crap about "cartharsis in young bands" and Puff Daddy-->

Interesting non? From what I've been told, there's a slight similarity
there, but nothing you could sue for. Apparently you can hear the song
in RealAudio at
http://catstevens.com/realaudio/teaforthetillerman/wheredothechildrenplay.ram
(damn, I wish these University computers had sound cards.....:( )

Do you think Ben could play "Knees Up Mother Brown"??? We could all have
a good ding-dong round the old joanna. Rickyyyyyyyy! [Note to all you

Have they really covered these two?? Someone let me know so I can add
them to my list.... [Hey, maybe it was BFF's new song, "Box In The
Snow", plagarised from B&S... :) ]

Err, I think that's enough ramblings for now...
