Subject: VIDEO UPDATE #2

Okay, it's the #2 update of the Ben Folds Five Video Bootleg #1 (possibly
a #2, as well). A lot of you have been asking what has been confirmed for
the video(s). Well, here's what I have & what is definately being sent to
me right now:

NOTE: THIS IS NOT EVERYTHING THAT WILL BE ON THE VIDEO!!! THERE WILL BE
MORE

Pottymouth: A Video Portrait
Battle of Who Could Care Less (video)
Brick (video)
?/?/97 - Space Ghost: Coast to Coast
6/12/97 - Jenny McCarthy: One Angry Dwarf
11/8/97 - Sessions at West 54th: Missing the War, Smoke, One Angry Dwarf,
Underground, Brick
12/17/97 - Letterman: Brick
12/19/97 - MTV Live: One Angry Dwarf, Brick
1/10/98 - SNL: Brick
1/21/98 - VH1 Crossroads: Brick
2/18/98 - MuchMusic: Battle of Who Could Care Less, One Angry Dwarf
2/22/98 - 120 Minutes
2/25/98 - Leno: Brick
2/26/98 - Keenan: Brick

I am also being sent an entire live show from 1995 in North Carolina.
It's about 70 minutes long & I will probably use it for the 2nd video.
Also, I am well aware of the overabundance of Brick appearances. Should I
keep them all the Video 1 or should I put half on 1 & half on 2? I figure
that would be better so it would not be as much overkill of the song as
we are used to.
I am still in negotiations for the other items on the list on UPDATE #1,
& hopefully will come to a conclusion soon. The page should be up by the
end of next week acknowlegding the folks who were kind enough to
contribute to the cause.

*FOND BUT NOT IN LOVE*
Steve!

Okie...I was listening to the radio today (I live in Durham, NC) when
"Brick" come on and the DJ said "a lot of people think this song is about
an abortion but the band swears up and down that its just about being
dumped." Did the band really say this? Or is she just making stuff up to
make herself appear smart because as far as I know it IS about an abortion.
But you guys are the experts... :)

Firstly, why are we getting stupid generic buisness mailers on the digest?
Can't someone sift those out before the digests get sent out. I want to hear
about Ben Folds Five, not a way i can make $4329875.00 a month.

Secondly, i open my locker today and, low and behold, there was a mysterious
photocopy of the picture of the boys from Rolling Stone. No note, no
explanation.. just, a random picture slipped in. My friends know nothing, my
english teacher (who's a bff fan) knows nothing. It's odd. It's scary. Have i
been visited by the Ben Folds Fairy? Hmm..

Subject: Similarities between BF5's songs & other songs

I added a page to my site which discusses the similarities between BF5's
songs and songs from the 70's. It's slightly technical, and might only
be of interest to musicians, but since BF5 similarities has been a common
topic on the Armchair, I wanted to let you know about it.

Also, I welcome submissions on this topic to add to my page, but only if
you can tell me exactly HOW a particular song is similar to a BF5 song.
(i.e., If all you can say is, "I think song X sounds like song Y," then
you needn't write. :-)

Hi, I'm new to the list (not having had e-mail that long) and I am looking
for other BF5 fans in Australia (preferably Queensland). If any such
animal exists out there (I know the fans exist - I saw the crowd who were
moshing at Livid last year - I'm just not sure if they are on the list),
either put a message on the list letting me know where you live, or e-mail
me at:

      "Kate Watkins/HBH@HBH@QldLaw"

Let's discuss a way to get BF5 out here again!!!

Here's my top five covers list for BF5, like they really care about what I
think they should play... but what the hey. Here goes nothin'.

5. 20% Amnesia - Elvis Costello (Brutal Youth)
4. A Slow Song - Joe Jackson (Night And Day)
3. Days - The Kinks (??)
2. The Oldest Story In The World - The Plimsouls (Everywhere At Once)
1. Last Rose Of Summer - Judas Priest (Sin After Sin)

C'mon, even the most offbeat choices would be ROTF hilarious to hear
reinterpreted BF5 style and you know it... Stop grimmacing.

HEY GUYS i know why brick and that other song sound the same, it's because
they were written by the same person, if you look closely at the Whatever...
insert you can see words written in just a slightly different color than the
background color, revealing that the entire ALBUM was written by Cat Stevens.
can you believe it??? man.
OH yeah and i think BFF should cover "song 8" by sunny day real estate
because i met ben in a dream and he told me that he thinks jeremy enigk is

Hot off the wires, folks. No shit.

Ben Folds, musician and sellout, will be producing one song for the upcoming
Godzilla soundtrack. Kids-- if you didn't think the man had sold his soul
before now, you need no more proof.

I heard it goes something like this:

You thought we were cool a while ago,
but now we're huge, and enjoyin' the show.
So here's a song we wrote for the cash,
we'll use it for beer, so we can get smashed.

Godzilla was never too cool when he was an egg,
and his friends all got expelled for cheating on their SATs.
So, he got all mad and destroyed the city.
He wasn't a beloved reptile any more.

(chorus) He's a brick and he's sinking slowly,
back into the sea whence he came.
We used to be cool, but now will ride this single,
all the way to half-assed fame.

Godzilla sat in his chair, dead to the world.
The beast had a girlfriend from the bagian bin.
She had told him she loved him, then left to go party.
And he was left to sit and kill Japanese Businessmen.

(chorus) We're doing this thing because Sony told us we should,
And the money is doing us quite well.
Robert's got a woman and Ben a hairpiece,
And Darren; he just got rid of the smell.

So the city was smashed and the lines were drawn.
Godzilla had withstood their attacks.
The day was ending, the fires were out,
He ate a Planned Parent hood and K-Mart for snacks.

(chorus) Our next CD's of Ben on the toilet,
And Darren with a bad cold.
Robert plays bass and harmonica,
while we all sniff coke and get stoned.

The song is ending now, Godzilla is back in the drink.
The repairs have begun, and the lights are restored.
The movie sucks, as you knew it would,
But if the money's right, we'll wirte the fuckin score.

aaah... that was nice to write. All lyrics by me, Dave-o.

With Kung-Fu Grip,

Subject: Cat Stevens? Come on....

My 2¢ ---

The Cat Stevens similarities must be coincidental. The song isn't that
similar. When you're only alternating between two chords, the chances of
sounding like something else are pretty darned good. And I think that
basing allegations of something like this only on chord structure are kind
of silly, to be honest. A band that I used to be in decided that we'd take
every song that used a G-C-D type progression and paste them all together
to make a funny cover/statement/whatever. We ended up with so many songs
that we had to stop after a couple of hours and write down an order. The
same thing can be done with nearly every Bush song ever written. Check out
the chords for Glycerine and the chorus of Machine head. Same pattern?
Yeah. Coincidence? Who cares? They suck anyway. ;)

At any rate, using a particular lick is not plagiarism. If it was, Puff
Daddy would be in REAL trouble.

Of course, BFF is not above working licks from other songs into their own.
(Gershwin lick in Philosophy, and I think it's the Doobie Brothers- "It
keeps you running" lick in Last Polka.) But those are so obvious that it's
more of a tribute. It's not like they're trying to pass it off as their
own.

Well, I've ranted enough.

Well, I was going to let everyone know how I was listening to a local
radio station in Charlotte (I'm home for the break) and they played BOWCCL
and the dj made an announcement about the boys doing a Burt Bacharach

Hey guys,

I'm writing to suggest that you all do whatever you can to see Mike Errico
perform if you live on the East Coast. He was just signed to Hybrid/Sire
records and they are just beginning to promote him. He performs by
himself, folky, soulful, rock stuff-- and he is incredibly innovative. He
uses his guitar as percussion, and plays it at the same time -- really
great stuff.

For those of you who would like to hear some of his stuff, I put up a
sound clip (mp3) from his show on Wed...

Please let me know what you think! Also, check out his web page:
