The moral of the story is that if you don't have nothing nice to say, don't
say nothing at all, Dave-O. I think that what you said pissed alot of people
off, and your assumptions are not so correct, "bad idea" was on the soundtrack
for the movie the truth about cats and dogs, and "Song for the Dumped" was on
the soundtrack to mr. wrong (this might not be the name of the movie but it
was the movie where a psychotic Bill Pullman was after Ellen Degenerus, I did
not see this movie if your asking) if I stand corrected, so what is so wrong
for them to do a song for the Godzilla soundtrack. Also think about how much
trouble they had to go through just to try to be successful, every band in
their right mind wants to be popular, famous, and have the chance to make as
much money as possible. I would kind of know the feeling you have because bff
is not playing in smaller clubs where the age limit is allowed to 18+ or 21+
(which would be the type of show I would perfer if I were going to a show in a
local bar. I know this feeling because one of my favorite bands Jump, Little
Children will have a burst of popularity and will not play for a $5 cover
charge anymore). But the truth of the matter is that BFF is moving on to
bigger and better things now and I feel that everyone should have the chance
to listen to BFF just once. They are original, you don't see many Dave
Mathews fans bitch because his following grows do you, even if it is among 12
and 13 year olds. I honestly believe that it should not be about the fame or
the selling out but the music, which Ben folds five is tops at.

Reeeeeeeeeeally?? Gimme a break! I don't understand how any of you (so
called) "loyal" BFF fans can argue that the guys shouldn't have a little
success (i.e. Brick and Godzilla). YES it makes me sad that I'm not super
cool and underground anymore because brick is being played on mainstream
"teeny bopper" radio but I'm not gonna sit here and cry that the guys have
some cash to set aside for their hypothetical kids college funds. I'm glad
that they're finally getting recognition for their talent, they deserve it.
Will the music change as a result? Maybe, but that's up to them.

Oh God DAMN...quit the selfish whining,
Chris-o

In reference to the "Bad Idea" reference in the whole soundtrack...uh...
reference...
I had a hell of a time remembering where I had heard that song, till I
watched "Truth about Cats & Dogs" for the seventeenth time last night.
Bingo. I don't think they could have fit that song in better anywhere.
So all this scrapping about writing for soundtracks, etc... I say,
chill. If they couldn't use it in the movie, or at least as a draw for
the mega-hype "Soundtrack"... they wouldn't have asked them to do it.
Period.
Happiness and hand grenades,

In a message dated 98-03-09 20:44:04 EST, you write:

<< On selling out: if Sony doesn't make money, the boys don't get to record =
anymore albums - that would suck. >>

this is very true. one instance... this great poppunk band Jawbreaker. see,
they did quite excellent on an indie, and had fans the world over. then they
signed to DGC and released "dear you." the first single, "fireman," didn't
sound anything like any jawbreaker i had heard. the punks accused them of
selling out, didn't buy ther records, and i don't think they got many new fans
either... their choice: to pay DGC the money they owe them for selling
poorly; or break up. they chose the latter. something like this may also
have happened to that dog., but i'm not sure.
therefore, i'm quite happy that bff is doing well enough that they won't get
dropped from their label any time soon. you should be too. once you sign to
a major, there is no going back to being indie.

Subject: couple questions

Hey I have been reading the armchair for about two years now and I rarely
write but I am sick of filtering through a half hours worth when only
three or four relate to things I am intersted in. oh well, I wanted
everyone to like BFF and now they do, damn!
But a couple questions
1. Anybody heard anything about an new album. WEAE came out a year ago
so I thought they might be working on some new stuff now.
2. Are they going to release a new single or video from WEAE? If so, any
ideas as to what it will be?
3. I saw them at Music Midtown in Atlanta last summer and I was wondering
if they are going to go back. Anybody know summer tour plans or if there
are any?
Guess that's it, hope you know something, and try to lighten up people, I
don't read the armchair for lectures on the first amendment. If you don't
like that guys song fine, but it was damn funny and I still love BFF!
Ooops one more questions- I am leaving for Europe in a few days, anybody
think there might be stuff that I should keep an eye open for that has
only been released there, I know all their stuff comes out earlier in
europe it seems.
thanks

I finally got around to writing out the chords for Kate. Hope you like
it.

KATE by Ben Folds (Five), 1997
This transcription by Michael Bluejay (bluejay@mail.com), 3-98

Play the chords with your right hand as eighth notes
  (eight chords per measure).

Intro:
Chord: F (remember, play as eight notes)
  Bass: F F A# A C
          F F A# A C, D F (repeat 7 times)
(note: bass guitar comes in the 3rd time
                                 you play this)

Verse:

     She plays

     F
wipeout on the drums. The squirrels and the birds come

     Gm
gather round to sing her guitar.

     Bb Bb/C
Oh I. Have you got nothing to say?

Chorus:
                 Am7 Fm/Ab Gm7
And you can see daisies in her footsteps.

          Bb Bbm/C F
Dandelions. Butterflies. I wanna be Kate.

Bridge: (damn, this was difficult to figure out)

I wrote out the individual notes in the right-hand chords since Ben's
chords are so textured.
But I also wrote in the chord symbols for you guitar players.

everything...piano, bass, guitar, drums, clarinet (anybody know of anything
else?). Thanks for listining, hope it helped.

why do you have to add in all that, 'dumbest man on earth..' you know
there are some new people that join the list every now and then... GIVE
THEM SOME COURTESY AND JUST POLITELY TELL THEM THE MEANING OF THE SONG!
why must you add in all the 'your dumb' stuff, we all started out as
equal fans, you didnt just hear ben folds five and automatically know
that its a phone in stevens last night, and that brick is about
abrtortion. no need for hostile attitudes.... we can be happy
