Eddie Walker is about a visit to a friend in a halfway house. It is *not*
about the real Eddie Walker who is the drummer for Bus Stop and has played
with been before. It's an example of Ben's habit of changing the name of
the songs protagonist, presumably to "protect the innocent."

1. Lest we actually believe that the "CEC" part of Fannie Packs was some
important lyrical prose, it could simply be nonsense. I thought it was a
reference to dead rapper Eazy-E, who was always referred to as "Eazy," and
other rappers tend to mention him a good deal, it seems.
That doesn't explain the first C, though. Oh well- just a theory.

2. I also play piano at an "alternative" service for First Presbyterian
Church here in W-S. The band was kind of in a bad way, with two players
no-shwoing for yesterday's service, and for the offertory, the sax player
and I will usually cover a jazz standard. However, the sax guy was
missing, and halfway through part of the message, I still hadn't thought
of anything to play, so as they passed the plate, I strolled up on stage
(the service is held in an art gallery) and played an abbreviated version
of "Alice Childress" without the vocals. My success has encouraged me
to work on Julianne for next week's doxology...

Hi Kiddies

During my weeklie vampire experience, I was channel surfing late last
night(Sun. 3/15) and stopped briefly on the Sci Fi Channel's C-Net Central
programme and they were talking about purchasing music on the web and then
went on about Cybercasts and you can guess who they talked about, including
about a two minute live clip and a ten second interview. No, I don't have
it on tape. This should start another frenzy! Now, back to your regularly
scheduled drivel.

The song in question is actually called "Nightswimming", and is off of
REM's
album, "Automatic For The People". Coincidentally, it's one of the most
genuinely beautiful songs I know of in recent pop music... however, I
don't
see all that much similarity to "Brick" except that both are "quiet"
piano
pieces. Anyways, if you haven't heard the song, I highly reccommend it.

Does "Brick" sound like "Here Comes The Sun" to anyone else, or am I alone? Of course,
given the subject matter of "Brick," it forever will, in my mind, be nicknamed, "There
Goes The Son"!

Hi Kiddies

Just got back from Ticketbastard with 2 seats to the Bacharach tribute at
the Hammerstein show in NYC for 4/8/98 featuring the Chapel Hill Three. $50
each, but well worth it as I'm a huge Costello fan as well. I won't be
taping it so don't ask.

Highlight of the show will be when Ben throws his piano stool right into
Dionne Warwick's huge nostril without touching the sides.

Hey kids...
I just read on the Superdrag list that Superdrag will be opening for Ben
Folds Five for the month of May. So hopefully they'll be doing another
small national tour. I'm going to see Superdrag this Saturday in
Knoxville and maybe I can find some info there....who knows.

Cheers!

first of all, the lounge-a-palooza cd is GREAT!2nd, "she don't use
jelly" probably would not be the best choice to put on the radio. sure,
it worked for the flaming lips, but a lounge version? don't get me
wrong, i think the song is great, but i don't think most people would
appreciate it. but hell, what do i know? that song could well make
lounge the newest "thing," just like reel big fish and the bosstones
made ska (actually it's more like pop-punk-ska) the newest "thing" a
while ago. and yes, i do like to use quotation marks.

> And why didn't they release the demo of "Underground"?? It could well

didn't they already release "underground" as a single? i thought they
did so a while back. but then, they could re-release it, i guess. for
example, that song "sex and candy" by marcy playground was released a
while ago but wasn't really promoted. then recently, it was released
again, and now it's on all the time.

does anyone else think "fair" and "missing the war" are really great
pieces of music? i hear all this stuff about everything but those two.
i don't know, maybe i'm just a tad bit odd. i can't figure out the
piano part for those two yet, though. i think i've finally got "kate"
under my belt, though. woohoo!

Does anyone on this list like Medeski, Martin, and Wood? They are a piano-
bass-drums "acid jazz" trio, they sound nothing like Ben Folds Five BUT they
have this experimental album called Farmers Harvest (or something like that)
and I wondered if maybe Ben's Fear of Pop album would be in the same vein...E-

In the song Kate...Rosemary & Cameron are the names of 2 intersecting
streets in Chapel Hill, in the song Mitchell Lane...Mitchell Lane is the
name of a street in Chapel Hill too. :) Just some random info. Oh, and
Eddie Walker is about a guy in a half-way house. Eddie Walker was also the
name of one of his old friends that used to be in Majosha...but I can't
remember if it was Majosha or Pots & Pans.

I think it was justinryan@usa.net that brought up the subject of bf5
purposefully misspelling words. One their self-titled album they spelled
Wheres Summer B. without the contraction between Wheres. Ya'll should be
spelled y'all, and there should be an apostrophy in Steven's in Stevens Last
Night in Town. Since people on the armchair are becoming real sticklers
about correct spelling...I figured this would make sense. :)

they also played bf5 on the episode where they were on a cattle drive? They
are playing "Battle...", I was flipping the channels and heard the familiar

Hi I'm new to the list, but I do know where the lyrics for nearly (if
not all, I can't remember) for the first 2 albums. Follow the links

this is where i found out about this list.

And would you stop talking about selling out? They are not, I'd like
them to be more popular so when I go to buy their CDs, I can actually
find more than one in the shop.!

If anyone knows of a way to get the piano songbook without using a

can be got in Australia.
Thanx : )

Somebody requested the lyrics to Emaline...here they are...

Emaline:

I wish it was last September
So we could lose ourselves in crowds everyday.
'Cos Emaline, don't walk in time,
she's not the same that's all you can say.

[*When I've heard enough, I tell myself]
[**That's all you can say]

That we've learnt our lesson, but I
don't wanna walk away from Emaline.

[**shhhh!]

They're talking now,
does she know what they're saying?
She's got that air, to float above it.
I'me sinking in the summer champagne.

She's dear to me, and so expensive,
now I'm not talkin 'bout money.
When money talks, I hate to listen,
but lately it's been screamin in my ear.

When I've heard enough, I tell myself--
that we've learnt our lesson, but I
don't wanna walk away from Emaline.

[**I don't.]

It only took me one look to understand Emaline,
sometimes I don't know what she's saying.
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't know what she's saying.
But I know, I know, I know what she wants to believe.

I wish it was last September.

Don't let me walk away from Emaline,
for stupid reasons,
now I'm talkin 'bout money.
When money talks, I hate to listen,
but lately it's been screaming in my ear.
Yeah, what advice?! Girls need attention.
Or are you different than all mine?
For all it's worth, she's got attention,
but people accuse you, black and white.

Now I've heard enough, I'll tell you what.
I really shouldn't sit here and whine,
I'll take you down to see my Emaline.

Subject: my favorite band in the world

i was watching the eight days of 80's on vh1 this weekend, and they had a
thing about the fixx on there. it said that although the band is no longer
making hit singles, they continue to make albums for their die-hard fans.
they just released an album this year. now what does this have to do with
us and this list. it gave me hope. (start the background music of the
national anthem) it gave me hope that someday, if ben folds five becomes
less than huge, they might continue to do what they obviously love. not
for the money, not for the fame, but for us. we little people might one
day be enough incentive for more albums, more tours, and more of the
fabulous music that we have come to know as ben folds five's.

so now that i've said that piece...i wish you all a fond farewell (no, i'm
not leaving the list, just saying my goodbye for the post). until next
time...
