hey all you close minded uneducated top 40 radio listening mtv watching
brick loving teenagers - there is not a damn thing wrong with techno, in
fact, unless you haven't noticed, it is beginning to become a big hit,
and is creeping up on the mainstream culture as i type and you read
this. now i don't want to yell at anyone(heehee), but ben doing a
tech-ambient album is downright good. how many people like Beck and his
where its at songs? how many know that he does jazz, folk, blues, tech,
and rock, but on separate albums? that he has at least 6 or 7 albums out
right now? so if ben is doing tech, let him, the only way one advances
is practice, experimentation with the new, and learning from one's
mistakes.

sorry for the interruption...

<< okay, I don't think criticism is appropriate for an album that is yet to
be released. we haven't even heard Ben's new album yet, and people
are posting about how it is against everything he is musically >>
Alrighty, I go to Mills College in Oakland, CA . It's a small private
liberal arts college and home to <trumpets sounding> CCM, Center for
Contempary Music. John Cage taught here and Philip Glass to name a few very
famous people. No, no, I'm not on the board of Admissions here at Mills, I am
getting somewhere. Being a music major, I do know something about CCM and the
music that it produces.
This new album that Ben's doing sounds very much along the same lines as
what my professors do. It is partly computerized music, but this does NOT
EQUAL TECHNO. In fact it's far from it. Now one of the things that has
concluded me to think that Ben may be doing something like what "we", (I say
"we" because I'm not really into the whole computerized music thing), do at
Mills, was because at the end of one of Bff's B-sides,( for the life of me I
can't find it right now), he does a very John Cage like thing, the counting
and what not. Plus there are other things I've heard about this album that
lead me to believe that it's this kind of music.
Hmmmm did this make any sense to ya'll? I just keep seeing all these
posts about Ben "going techno" and I think you're getting the wrong idea. But
hey, I may be totally wrong. Maybe for the next album, Ben will fire Darren
and Robert and hire those guys from the Pet Shop Boys. :)
- -Lauren
* now, I know most of you are pretty smart, but just in case, I want ya'll to
know that this was a joke. So, please don't let me see any posts like "Ben
Folds with Aphex Twin!! Where!?" :)

To all you midwesterners,

I am going to be at the OHIO show on May 19th. However, I will be all alone
cuz I am driving cross country this summer. I was hoping some people who are
going would like to meet up before/at the show. It would be depressing to be
all alone that night, even though I love the boys, because it will be my
birthday!!! So, anyone? Bueller?!?!!!

ok, to the CHICAGO group who are planning to meet up. I have been out of the
loop cuz I had to change my screen name. I was higeary, but now I am
rachw2as. Please put me in the email loop again!! Many thanks! : )

This message is specifically to Azusa Motohashi - I lost your address
somehow, but I wanted to say THANKYOU SO MUCH for the cd you sent me!!
It is just GREAT and you are fantastic!!

Secondly, for anyone who's interested - I wrote a post not so long ago
about ANDY WALLACE being not only the mixer for WEAEA but for Sonic
Youth's 'Dirty' album. Well he also did Jeff Buckley's 'Grace' (that
wonerfully magnificent oh-so-fine record). What a star. I just thought
that was interesting.

cheers, (and thanks again Azusa!)

hiya.

someone posted a little while back inquiring about a BFF appearance on a new
compilation due out in may. here's the shit:

Americans for Radio Diversity (ARD) is releasing a compilation titled
"TELECONNED Volume 1: We Want The Airwaves" on the NO ALTERNATIVE label. the cd
features several live/unreleased tracks from several bands including (but not
limited to) soul coughing, ani difranco, low, walt mink, his name is alive and
of course, BEN FOLDS FIVE. the bff track is dr. pyser. it is the version with
strings recorded last summer on the KCRW morning show.

the cd is indeed an eclectic mix, i encourage everyone to go out and buy it.
the proceeds from the cd go toward ARD, a not-for-profit group that was formed
in minneapolis after the 1996 FCC telecom act that deregulated radio and
television broadcasting. ARD is an active voice for independent labels and
artists as well as radio listeners concerned with diversity in radio
programming.

i have an advance copy, i and i can assure you that this cd will be well placed
in your collection. very good stuff. cool to hear the strings with the BFF
boys, too. the street date for the cd is may 5th. more information on the cd
and ARD is available at: http://radiodiversity.com/

On a bootleg I recently received, (thank you Ryan Neary), right before

recorded it for a compilation of One Hit Wonder cover songs. Does
anyone know if this ever came to fruition? What label it's on? Is it
still available? Is there anything at all containing a BFF-studio
version of this song? Please mail me if you know.

Ok, so maybe I do screw up ONE quote. Of course you can't be civil, and e-mail
me (like two other people did, nicely) but you get on the armchair, and
publically humilate me, by insulting me. I don't know if you've read the rules
of the armchair, but you're not suppose to insult people directly on the
armchiar. So next time you go on a power trip with your keyboard, try not to
insult me.

That's why I think I hardly ever post to this anymore, because if you do
indeed screw one thing up, you're dismissed as a moron.

Oh, and back to correcting quotes, you've got the last polka one wrong.

it's NOT

"now we're treading water, now we're holding back our tears"

but, it's:

"We're treading water now, and holding back our tears"

Next time you correct someone elses quote, you MAY want to type your ending
quote correct yourself

Bring it,
- - - Katie
