I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY agree!!! If you listen to Mellow Gold and then
listen to Odelay, you can tell the HUGE difference. Mellow is really scratchy
and unpolished. Odelay is clean and *crisp* I really hate that word!!! But
it's true. As a huge beck fan, I love both of them, but if scratchy is what
floats your boat, then go for it.
I really like WEA recorded at Ben's house. I mean, then we wouldn't have the
infamous crickets and telephone ring. Plus in Brick, you can hear a door
close. I really like that.

Can someone tell me about Anna Goodman? I LOVE the songs she and ben did
together. They totally kick ass. Who is she?

For those who never saw the video on MTV, you can view it online, pretty
good quality too if you have a T1 but you can see it also even if you have a
28.8 but its pretty choppy. at of course http://www.altvideos.com
For those of you that have never been there before they also have OAD,
BOWCCL and Brick to watch along with many other bands and thier vids.

Subject: This is what is on the Godzilla Soundtrack for those who asked:

Since someone asked and maybe a few others are curious, these are the other
songs on the Godzilla soundtrack:

The Wallflowers - Heroes (the David Bowie tune)
Puff Daddy with Jimmy Page (yes THAT Jimmy Page) - Come with Me
Jamiroquai - Deeper Underground
Rage Against the Machine - No Shelter
BF5 - Air
Days of the New - Running Knees
Michael Penn - Macy Day Parade
Fuel - Walk the Sky
Foo Fighters - A320
Green Day - Brain Stew (Godzilla Remix)
Silverchair - untitled
Fuzzbubble - Out There
Joey DeLuxe - Undercover
David Arnold - Opening Titles
David Arnold - Look for Clues

I wasn't terribly impressed by the new BF5 song. I mean, it's not a bad song
- - I don't dislike ANY song that they've ever made actually - it just isn't
going to rank as one of my favorites. As someone else said in today's posts,
I could do without it. But, it's worth having to complete the collection, I
suppose.

As for the rest of the album, it's typical soundtrack fodder - mostly crap
with a few tunes that are simply adequate. If you can stand it, I'd wait
until "Air" appears on a CD Single before you pay $14-$17 for the soundtrack.
Just my opinion.

Chris Mal

I like it a lot, but it's much "bigger" sounding than any other BFF song I've
previously heard. Interesting sounds going on. Needless to say, my favorite
song on the album, although the Green Day "remix" was interesting. It is a
bit reminiscant of Eddie Walker, but in a very, very remote kind of way...

Hey,

1) If anyone on the chair is going to Edgefest in Sommerset Wisconsin this
weekend, email me so we can get decent spots to stand. I saw BFF last at
First Ave and was 2 people deep from the piano, an amazing experience.

2) I, too, think the SFTD video was great, both my friend and I were blown
away by the one handed part Ben does about 2 minutes into the song. Playing
the piano with his arm and the stool should show MTV watchers that the boys
aren't all fuddy-duddies like the Brick video shows.

3) Finally, for all of you out there complaining about not having a radio
station that breaks bands, I have a good solution. If you live in a college
town, tune in the CAMPUS STATION. Ben and the boys got started on this
amazing medium and you'll hear many a band that you've never heard of
before. If you don't have a college, watch 120 MINUTES, the experience is
about the same, and I bet most of you that are online get MTV. If you
decide you don't like 120 Minutes because you don't know the bands, I guess
you deserve to be called a Brickhead.

sorry for the length, and email me if you're going to edgefest. take it
easy,

Tommy

"stop that, it makes me cry"...i think he was referring to how we were all
in a really tight group of friends the september before our senior year,

really bittersweet line, too.

Okay guys....

My dad's birthday is tomorrow and I couldn't locate a BFF piano song book
anywhere. (I ended up getting him an outfit) I know he would love it more than
anything and Father's day is coming up.

And because he was the one who got me interested in Ben Folds Five that lazy
sunny day,... Sept 95, I feel it is my, or our armchair duty to get him this
songbook.

SO, if anyone knows where I could find one, or if anyone has a copy I could
buy off of you, I would appreciate it. Or, if someone has it and is willing
to photocopy it I will pay you for it. E-mail me privately.

I thank you for your anticipated help.

Subject: I am a screamer

Hello, my name is Elisabeth, and I'm a screamer. I've been screaming for
about two years now, ever since my first rock concert. I remember it like it
was yesterday...they say you never forget your first. It was at a Barenaked
Ladies concert, August 22nd, 1996, San Francisco, California. The band came
on stage and I screamed. I didn't scream because I wanted to piss of the
people in front of me. I didn't scream because I wanted Steve or Ed or Jim or
Tyler or whoever was playing the keyboards at the time to hear me. No, I
screamed because I was overcome with emotion. It was like living in a
Hallmark commercial, I just couldn't hold back. From then on I was hooked. I
had to scream at least four, five times a concert. It's like a drug I tell
ya. My most recent screaming moment was on May 10th 1998 at the Ben Folds
Five concert in Mountain View, California. Ben, Rob, and Darren took the
stage, and suddenly I had no control over my vocal chords. Music, especially
music that I love, has a power over me like nothing else. It can make me do
the craziest things, and the best part is that when I'm lost in my own little
world I'm indifferent to most of what is going on around me, and I'm having
the time of my life. It's like being naturally high. If you're standing in
front of me at a concert some day and you want me to stop screaming in your
ear, all you have to do is ask. I'll be quiet if that's what you really want.
Just keep in mind that we all have our own ways of conveying our feelings.
Maybe in your mind, I'm less of a fan because I'm 16 and not as worldly wise
as you. But in my mind, the only thing that matters is that I love the music
and the music loves me back.

Subject: "Air" and my Parents

Fellow Chairers:
   Just two little things:
I went to a Blockbuster Music store today to buy the Godzilla soundtrack so
I could get "Air". When I went up the the counter to pay, they guy said "Big
Wallflowers fan?" I told him no, I wanted the Ben Fold's Five song. He said
"never heard of them. Any good?"
This was annoying for two reasons. The first being that by the way he was
looking at me I felt like I was being undressed. The second was that
sometimes it's best for salespeople to just lie and say something like "I
haven't heard much about them, but the soundtrack is selling well so they
can't be all that bad." rather than what he really said. In fact, back when I
used to work in a CD store, I was instructed by my boss to do just that. I
didn't understand why until today.
By the way I love the song, even the techno-type background tracks. The
rest of the soundtrack rocks too.
The other thing i wanted to tell y'all about is kinda' funny.
I consider myself to be an independant 20 year old individual. However,
tuition and car payments being what they may, I still live with my parents.
One day my Mom overheard me singing "Song for the Dumped" and said that "This
Ben Fold's Five band sounds like a bunch of foul-mouth bastards if you ask
me."
So today I got a little adventurous. It old Mom there was a song I wanted
her to hear. I played "She Don't Use Jelly" for her and Dad and lo and
behold! Mom cracked up! She had heard the original on the radio once when I
forced her to listen to one of my stations and she thought it was funny that
the boys would go through so much trouble to "make fun" of such stupid lyrics.
Then Dad, who took a year of ballroom dancing, asked her to dance and they
started going though every Latin dance there is. They said they couldn't
quite figure out if it was the mambo, cha-cha, merengue or another one. But
it was fun.
I don't think I'll get yapped at for singing Song For the Dumped anymore.

Encores:

Played dance version of brick on the way out, but the band didn't play it.

Before they came out, the song "My Iron Lung" by radiohead was played over
the PA. This song is about raidohead's song "creep" and how they were so
sick of playing it... I think that BFF was trying to make a point about
brick and how sick they were of it. Then again, it could just be a good
song the band likes.

Subject: Bogart's Show (long)

Hi everybody, I got back from Cincinnati a little bit ago and I just wanted
to send a review of the show. They were, as always, awesome. Everything
about this day was awesome.

My friend and I got to the place about 4:30, stopped at BW-3's to get some
food, and got in line behind just 2 people. Just minutes after we sat on the
ground to eat, Darren walked by! He said, and I quote, "Hey, chicken wings."
We said "What's up", and he continued down the street. Then, a few minutes
later, to our surprise, Ben walked by! We asked him if they'd be signing
anything after the show, and he said they'd be around back. We were pretty
excited by now, and who else walks by, just a few minutes later? Why, yes,
it's Robert! He walked by a little quicker, and we got in a "what's up", and
let him pass. We were both pretty giddy by now, and we carried on a
conversation with the people around us for the next agonizingly long 2
hours. Just a little before the doors opened, a woman (I'm not sure who she
was, I've never seen her before) came up to us(the people in the front of
the line) and handed out stickers and flats to us for showing up so early.
Finally, a few minutes later, the doors opened.

We sprinted to the front, right in front of where Ben's piano would soon
sit. Noticing the posters on the walls, my friend quickly grabbed two, and
then we were set for the night. I wasn't too impressed with Superdrag, but
they also weren't all that bad, and I lived. After what seemed like four
hours, the guys came out. The sound wasn't that great where I was, and the
crowd was singing almost louder than the band, but it was still great. The
teenage girls behind us screeching in our ears for the first half of the
show didn't help either. I'm one of the most laid back people you'll ever
meet, and I don't upset easily, but these girls needed to shut up. It was
just unnecessary. Other than those couple things, it was all good. The set
went something like this, in some order but not really:

Dr. Pyser, Battle, Philosophy, Fair, Kate, (for this one we have to get out
the Brick Bass) Evaporated, (here's the big hit) Raindrops, Julianne,
Selfless, Missing the War, Last Polka, Emaline, Eddie Walker, Song for the
Dumped, Smoke, Alice Childress, Steven's, Dwarf-Underground, ENCORE: Boxing,
Uncle Walter

I wanted Air, and it was on the setlist, but oh well. Somewhere in there,
some a** made a rude comment or something, and Robert seemed kind of pissed
about it. He then proceeded to do some sort of gospel/r&b type song telling
the guy off. It was really cool. Right after that, Ben took a break while
Robert and Darren (Robert on vocals) did a Deep Purple song. I'm not sure of
the name. Anyway, he forgot a verse and asked if anyone knew the words, when
a girl raised her hand, he invited her on stage to sing it. That had to be
damn cool. The show was over all too soon, and we went around back to wait
for the band.

It was, of course, raining a little, so I decided to just get my ticket stub
signed instead of the WAEA vinyl I had in my car. What started as a
sprinkle, continued to get harder and harder until it was pouring. People
started to leave, and we kept waiting. We jumped under the overhang where
they were loading stuff onto the trailer, even though by that time we were
completely drenched. After an hour or so, and after the majority of the
people waiting left, the band invited the remaining people(15 or 20 of us)
inside the back door to get autographs. This is the second time I've met the
guys, and they haven't stopped appreciating the fans at all. They thanked us
all for waiting in the rain so long, and patiently signed everybody's stuff.
I got out the standard -- If I start actually talking I'll babble on forever
(as I am right now) so I'll just say "great show Darren/Ben/Robert" Another
truly wonderful concert experience, and I'm sure I'll have many more seeing
this wonderful group of musicians. BTW, if you've read this far, thanks.

Thus ends my yearly post,
Mike

ps. To anyone who's heard the dance remix of Brick, is it just the normal
song with a faster beat, or are parts done differently? Just wondering,
because after the encore they played a dance version of Brick, but Robert
was singing parts, and some of the lyrics were done differently.
