ITSELF! If you are having trouble, send mail to

your old address, then subscribe using your new account.

SCHOOL'S OUT FOR {SUMMER | EVER}!!
If the above statement applies to you, be sure to unsubscribe from
the Armchair if you will not have access to your e-mail account over the
summer. Otherwise, your mailbox will fill up and the system administrator
at your school will be one angry dwarf...
Accordingly, very soon I will begin purging the mailing list of any
address that bounces for any reason (e.g., too many hops, mailbox full,
no route to host), not just 'user unknown'. If you find yourself
unsubscribed, this is probably the reason.

THANKS A THOUSAND
With the passage of 1,000 issues of the Armchair I'd like to thank
everyone for their contributions to the success of the list. We have a great
group of fans and the band is very appreciative of your support.

Hey all you pretentious,arrogant BFF-nazis!
In case you missed it, reprinted here is the best insight on the
Armchair this week. If you want to flame Dan, go ahead, you'd just go
further to proving his point. A point I share. So flame away. Who knows,
maybe you'll come up with some new insult for BFF fans who came along
after you. Some of us newer fans already have a nickname for some of you
older fans: ASSHOLES.

we are?
Regardless, however mad you may be that Ben Folds Five is enjoying
commercial success, keep it in mind that you have no right to deride
other BFF fans".

I, for one, never requested that you go over the topic of concert
etiquette. And I can't recall anybody else posting such a request. So,
if you don't feel like going over it again, then don't.

Why let it bother you? If you don't enjoy screaming fans at the
concerts, then ponder this: at the end of the show, you'll be going
home angry and upset at a few individuals, while they'll be going home
having enjoyed an amazing show.

I've gone to James Taylor concerts where there were people yelling and
screaming right next to me. I'm not a screamer myself, but I did notice
that these people were having a great time, and why shouldn't they?
That is what going to concerts is about.

So please stop acting like everybody's mother, and let people be
themselves.

Rusty

P.S. I find it amusing that you take a cheap shot with the `spell
checker' comment, and two lines later you're using the word `poeple.'
My spell checker oesn't have that one in it's memory.

In case you didn't know...

Wall of Sound reports that the first post-Bill Berry R.E.M. song, a ballad
called "Why Not Smile," will appear only as part of Southern music sampler
accompanying the next issue of Oxford American. The disc is also said to
include classics by Louis Jordan, Johnny Mercer, Bobbie Gentry, and the
Stanley Brothers, as well as new songs from Vic Chesnutt, and Ben Folds Five.
The R.E.M. cut may also surface on the band's next album, due in the fall. It
should be available at newsstands and bookstores, but the best way to get a
copy is to call the magazine direct at (601) 236-1836....

after the music ends. What's the deal?

- -Hey, I noticed a bunch of you are commenting on how you hope that they don't
do another soundtrack. Well, I remember hearing somewhere that the label
(record company, whatever you want to call it; I'm not good with that stuff)
approached them and kind of, like, said, well, there's a movie, we want you to
do a song...i dont think they really had much of a choice....hey, you guys
didn't like Fuel on the soundtrack? Their 2nd album, Sunburn, is great, so I
thought their song would be good too. ?

- -Ever have a song that fits exactly into your present situation? I had a
track meet today, and I was sitting on the ground with BFF on...Anyway, Boxing
was on, and I was sitting alone in the middle of all these people swirling
around me in every direction...I felt like I was in a video...Am I crazy, or
do you know what I mean? You'll be like, sitting somewhere, and you'll think,
hey, this would make a cool video!

- -You know how you all are talking about short people at concerts? Well, this
story is amusing to me, but maybe cause I'm in it...So if you're not amused by
stories not involving you or BFF, skip this next little thing. Anyway, where
was I...Oh yeah, I was at a 3eb concert at the Electric Factory in Philly...It
was packed, I couldn't move a step, literally. I left my friends cause they
wouldn't move from the wall, and I couldn't see (I'm a short one too). So I
moved up, and I was squooshed into this bunch of people; I just kind of moved
on in. Anyway, they were all pushing against my back (to push me over? cause
they couldn't see either? so they could rest their feet and sit on me? I
don't know), so I'm like, standing there pushing backwards also...It's like
this huge silent battle between me and some person behind me whom I can't even
see...Know what I mean? If you don't, then this wasn't amusing to you at all.

- --ok--if you're taller than me, i don't expect you to move so I can see.
However, if you have big hair and/or hair with an excessive amount of styling
products in it or if you hair texture resembles that of hay, PLEASE don't
stick it in my mouth!! :) I'm not hungry enough to taste your hair in the
middle of a concert, ok?!

- --Jenny--
No, you're not the only stupid one who missed the SFTD video..That would be
me, too. :)

- --casey--
you work for y100, so do you know if they'll be doing the "Show Me Your Y100"
thing there? Cause I've done it before, and I must say, we're pretty damn
good at it. :) Plus we could meet some bands (namely, Fuel, Athenaeum, and
of course BF5).

- --jessica--
about hank azaria---if you were truly amused by him, check out last months
Launch, he's so funny on it..well, if you appreciate that kind of humor...I
mean, I think Jim Carrey (sp?) is just so funny! *Anyway, BF5 was also on
Launch a couple monthes ago, anyone else see it?

since someone wanted to know:
- -in my cd changer at the moment:
Harvey Danger, Third Eye Blind, Radiohead.
- -in my walkman
well, switched between BFF (ST) and a CMJ mix I made.
- -in my discman
Fuel.

Hey you people. i'm crushing your heads.

oh wait, wrong newsletter.

anyway, you'll be glad you kept on reading this:

I was just, you know, "chillin" with Tom Maxwell of the Squirrel Nut
Zippers today after their excellent show in Cleveland, and we got to
talkin' about Chapel Hill, then Ben Folds Five. I said "hey tom, do ya like
Ben Folds Five" and he said "oh yeah, ben's a great guy" here's the cool part:

"Ben is in our new video as a matter of fact"

Okay so now we know he's in a new vid. i also know that their new album is
coming out August 4th and the first single is "The Ghost of Steven Foster"
(What a great song!!!!!!!!!!) and i'm not sure how far in advance singles
come out or when videos come out or what. SO....come the end of July or
beginning of August, start watching 12o Mins to see Ben in the new SNZ video.

How's that for some privelaged information?

before i go: SNZ vs. BFF in excitement level. I say SNZ blows the boys
away. Discuss.

taped the sessions at w. 54th ... they never performed better (on tv).
they played missing the war, smoke, one angry dwarf ..., underground, &
brick. their interview i thought was amusing. the guy doing it looked
like he was dying. and can i say the five never looked cuter. that was
the first time i saw ben with (somewhat grown-out) hair ... looks good.

does anyone have a tape of all their videos? i'd like to obtain a copy

okay guys...
from a short (5'0") person's view...it sucks to be behind tall people.
I once was at a weezer show, one person from the barrier and passed out
because of all the pushing and a lack of good air getting down to me (i
was surrounded by tall people) The girl in front of me wouldn't even
let me stick my head over the barrier to get some air. HOWEVER, since
that night I have always gotten there way early to be in the front row.
Still, if I see a little kid, I always put them in front of me...it
sucks to be short at busy shows.

it's kind of a shame that because of how in demand they are for touring and
other promotional stuff, they won't get into the studio to work an a new album
until october. not that we don't appreciate all the chances they've given us
to see them live in the past 3 years. since Whatever was recorded in sep-oct
96 and was released in late march 97, my estimate is that the new album will
be released around april or may 99.
~
about bf5 concert etiquette: when i first went to see them live in july 96, i
was only vaguely framiliar with them. i had read a few reviews and heard part
of "Uncle Walter" once on the radio. needless to say, i was blown away. i
was right up against the rail in front of the stage only a few feet away from
Ben. i was awestruck at how well these three musicians played together with
prowess, style, substance, and humor. much of the crowd also seemed to have
the same reaction. i barely moved the entire time, just standing there with a
huge smile on my face as i heard some incredible songs for the first time(the
setlist was most of the first album and a few whatever songs with some improv
thrown in). at one point Ben sarcastically remarked about how "wild" the
audience was and told them to "calm down".

in the ensuing months, i became a huge fan of the band, and was far from
disappointed when they released their second album. so by the time i saw
them for a second time last november, i was fully prepared and brought along a
few friends that i had converted. the show was incredible, and must have
been one of their best, even for a band as consistently entertaining as they
are. i was in a state of bliss. i smiled, i danced and pogoed during the
upbeat songs. i used up so much energy that by the time they played
"Brick"(which had not yet become a hit) halfway through the two-hour set, i
was exhausted and almost passed out, so i sacrificed my spot in front of
Robert to sit over to the side of the stage with an obstructed view. aside
from a large amount of loyal fans who were as blissed out as i was, there were
also many dull college kids who were probably glad to see me get out of their
way. i guess some people are just too selfless, cold, and composed to really
let loose, although the band never are. if you want to scream and go crazy
for a fabulous group of entertainers, do so, but keep in mind that some
squares may be annoyed by your antics. i tried to keep out of people's way,
but you can only do so much to avoid infringing upon other people without
sacrificing your own happiness.
i love this band's music. brilliant. and the concerts are even better than
the albums.
