The Ben Folds Five Mailing List

TO REMOVE YOURSELF FROM THIS MAILING LIST
   Send an e-mail message to:
          armchair-request@maillist.il.fontys.nl
with the word
          unsubscribe
in the message body. Please DO NOT POST UNSUBSCRIBE REQUESTS TO THE LIST
ITSELF! If you are having trouble, send mail to
          owner-armchair@maillist.il.fontys.nl
and I will try to help you. To change your address, first unsub yourself from
your old address, then subscribe using your new account.

SCHOOL'S OUT FOR {SUMMER | EVER}!!
If the above statement applies to you, be sure to unsubscribe from
the Armchair if you will not have access to your e-mail account over the
summer. Otherwise, your mailbox will fill up and the system administrator
at your school will be one angry dwarf...
Accordingly, very soon I will begin purging the mailing list of any
address that bounces for any reason (e.g., too many hops, mailbox full,
no route to host), not just 'user unknown'. If you find yourself
unsubscribed, this is probably the reason.

THANKS A THOUSAND
With the passage of 1,000 issues of the Armchair I'd like to thank
everyone for their contributions to the success of the list. We have a great
group of fans and the band is very appreciative of your support.

I have checked the tour dates on the BFF site, but I was wondering if
anyone knew about any shows in july or anything that may be happening....

thanx..

Just wanted to say thanks to SonikSpam who, complaining about the spam
email, proceeded to include it with his reply. :) (Note: This is
sarcasm...) And here's my BFF content... I noticed Franks Maynard's site
is down (or at least says no data when I try to get to it). Frank, what's
up? (I figure Frank is close enough to the band that I can kind of make
him the 4th member, thus this is BFF content... enough with my
ramblings...)

Hello everyone, from a gal who hasn't posted in a while... I just wanted to
say that watching the banter between Rusty and Chris Mal has kept me
entertained for the past few days as I catch up on my armchairs... (I've been
away from my computer...) thanks guys!!! On a BFF note, I was kind of moping
around b/c the concert at Foxwoods w/ DMB and Beck is on the same day as my
senior prom, and I chose not to go insane buying tickets in favor of attending
this supposedly historic event in my high school career. But now that I think
about it, I would be kind of sad to have to sit in a stadium and watch the
boys when I was once 10 feet away, close enough to notice Ben's funky black
and white striped socks... anyone else feeling the same who's going to the big
stadium shows? Just curious... see y'all later

Why do all these people leave the mailing list? I realize it's not
quite the same as it used to be, but hell, stick it out. Ben Folds
Five is worth it dammit! =) Michael Bluejay will be missed, he is a
true fan. And yes, he's over 18. (Sorry, had to throw that in to piss
everyone off) Long story short, I might not like the direction the
chair is going, but I'm here for the long run. Yeah, baby!

Always,

Subject: Why is it the Armchair?

Although this has probalby already been answered, I thought I'd answer it to
the best of my abilities as well. This is in response to Chandra Hicks
question of why the Magical Armchair, is in fact, the Magical Armchair. Well,
a long time ago...say, maybe in the 70's or 80's..possibly even higher, I
can't remember...we were simply the Ben Folds Five mailing list (pre-
automation). Not content with such a boring name (not that Ben Folds Five
isn't a perfectly wonderful name, because it is), someone (perhaps Frank)
suggested that we come up with several names for the digest and vote on them.
Well...after some time and several suggestions (I can't remember them..Jackson
Cannery perhaps was one) Magical Armchair was finally decided upon. So
Chandra, I hope this answers your question...and I hope I remembered things
right...been so long...

<< it was an awful expierance. the only played a few
songs although very much to my liking they did not play brick. i hope it
pissed of all the little whores who are sans a shoe or two today. im sorry
for
all this bitching. and i hope all you damn jocks who ruined the concert for
the rest of us are pretty damn proud of yourself. >>

You see, this is exactly the kind of crap I'm talking about. I've been to
about 200+ concerts in my life and about 10 Ben Folds Five shows, and BF5 fans
are definitely some of the most obnoxious crowds I've ever been around. For
those of you who are "normal" people I apologize for generalizing. I'm sure a
majority of you are not part of the problem. It just amazes me how many more
obnoxious people there are at BF5 shows. And why? Although most of their
music rocks, I wouldn't say it's conducive to what you would except at a punk
rock concert or anything. Anyone have any ideas? It's sad really, moshing is
probably appropriate for some music, but when you are moshing to "Selfless,
Cold & Composed" I would get the impression you must just be bored and have no
interest in absorbing the show. And if that's the case, why do these people
buy tickets??????

Okay, Grand Rapids show....

Bad sound. Worst I've ever heard.

Ben's piano was broken. He asked us to "pray for his Steinway." He had a
Baldwin.
Met a few listers(Eric, Jen, others).

Shortest show I've ever seen them play.

EVAPORATED......what a joy. And EVERYONE thoght they were about to play
brick because of the stand up bass....not that there's anything wrong
with that.

The guys had never seen that foam "brick" promo I got from a nice
listmember. They wanted it. I didn't give it to them. They said I did the
right thing.

Oh yeah, Ben played Jackson Cannery on electric guitar. I don't know why.
Ben said he didn't really know why either but he DEFINITELY prefers piano
to guitar. Now more than ever.

No air or raindrops.

Stupid people yelled stupid things at the opening band. That is SOOOOO
uncool.

Hi, friends.

We're sorry for cutting into your reading time, but we figured you might be
interested in this.

If you're at all interested in the possibility of winning $1,000, no
bullshitting, please read on. This was not written by some big corporate
honcho, it was written by ed and revised by yours truly and has no
advertising qualities whatsoever. This is not spam.

http://www.distributed.net

RC5-64 is a 64 bit encryption standard. There is a contest going on,
hosted by RSA Assoc. to see if it is possible to crack 64 bit encryption.
Distributed.net has organized an incredibly fascinating way to solve the
problem. Have you heard of deep blue, the amazing chess computer? It used
massive parallelism, hundreds of pentium chips hooked together, to become
the most powerful
computer on earth. Distributed.net uses the same tactic by organizing
thousands of people together and using their spare processor power to
create a globally massive parallel computer.

Now, if anyone feels like doing the math, there are 2^64 or 68719476736
different ways to encrypt a message using RC5-64. That's a lot. The
contest awards $1,000 to the person who finds the right key. Just by
participating and doing nothing, you stand a chance at winning some cash.

Go to http://www.distributed.net/cgi/select.cgi to download the client for
your operating system. You won't notice any reduction is system
performance once you run the client. Even if you so desire, after the
first time you load your client, you never have to see or think about it
again. It takes care of itself. If you have any questions, feel free to
contact ed or myself.

Check out http://www.distributed.net/FAQ/teamfaq.html for information on
what teams are all about, and let us know when you get set up, we'd like
for you to join our team. If we want any chance at winning the contest, we
have to get cracking with a massive group of people to catch the team in
first, so please get on our side as soon as possible and tell everyone you
know. Joining our team is easy, will take you all of five minutes, and
puts us in the running for national exposure if we win. In just three
days, with five members, we jumped from the bottom of the list to ranking
2184. Imagine if another 20 people joined the team. If you're already
involved and not team-affiliated, our team number is 4187. Feel free to
sign up with us.

If you know anyone else who might be interested, please forward this to
them and have them get in contact with one of us.

Thanks for listening, and happy cracking!

dan cohen...
your words of wisdom should echo throughout the halls of the armchair and
hopefully wake some selfish peoples from their ignorant slumbers. i saw my
first bff show in cincy last night, after waiting for over 2 years, and
despite my ridiculous expectations, it was amazing. i never wanted to go
home. though the pain of listening to 45 minutes of superdrag definitely
enhanced the boys' arrival, i thought that the band played nearly every
song, entertained its' fans royally, and seemed to have a genuinely damn
good time. the best 25 dollars i will ever spend. being only 5 feet away
from the band and being immersed in thier every move is the closest i have
ever felt to heaven. incredible and i can't wait til cleveland. later

Hello Armchairites,

Can anyone enlighten me on the line up for the G-105 Big Shindig at the
creek in Raleigh on Sunday May 31. It may be just me but it seems like a
simple case of too many great bands (BFF, Cherry Poppin Daddies, The
Connells, 7Mary3, Marcy Playground, etc.) too little time. I'm bound to
miss someone I wanted to see since their are two stages, but I would like
to try and schedule the day so I get at least the highlights.

Post or email me at bfitz1@worldnet.att.net
