in the message body. Please DO NOT POST UNSUBSCRIBE REQUESTS TO THE LIST
ITSELF! If you are having trouble, send mail to

and I will try to help you. To change your address, first unsub yourself from
your old address, then subscribe using your new account.
SCHOOL'S OUT FOR {SUMMER | EVER}!!
If the above statement applies to you, be sure to unsubscribe from
the Armchair if you will not have access to your e-mail account over the
summer. Otherwise, your mailbox will fill up and the system administrator
at your school will be one angry dwarf...
Accordingly, very soon I will begin purging the mailing list of any
address that bounces for any reason (e.g., too many hops, mailbox full,
no route to host), not just 'user unknown'. If you find yourself
unsubscribed, this is probably the reason.
THANKS A THOUSAND
With the passage of 1,000 issues of the Armchair I'd like to thank
everyone for their contributions to the success of the list. We have a great
group of fans and the band is very appreciative of your support.

Okay. We left a little late and ended up getting there around 6:00,
but to my delight, people were just standing around the entrance, and not
lined up. So when they asked people to line up, we were right up front
next to the doors. When we were able to make our way to the stage,
we got right up front on the barrier, in front of Robert. Superdrag
cancelled so some band called Zero Parade played. It just sounded
like one continuous song with the same bass line to me. But they threw
out a couple lemons, and I was able to snag one of them somehow.
So Ben, Robert, and Darren came on, and needless to say, they
were pretty damn amazing! Here's the setlist. It's probably a little off,
but these are all the songs they played:
Dr. Peyser
Battle
Selfless
Philosophy
Emaline
Last Polka
Alice Childress
Steven
Fair
Eddie Walker
Evaporated
Julianne
Underground
Freebird/ Bow Wow Wow jam
SFTD
Dwarf
encore:
Jackson Cannery
The highlights were:
Emaline- Something about this song always
sticks out. It's a pretty little thing.
Fair- The transition from the verse to chorus
just makes you want to go crazy.
Evaporated- When I saw them roll out the bowed bass,
I thought Brick was coming, but this was a great surprise
instead.
Dwarf- There was so much energy in this, but this got
the retard crowdsufers going even more than they were before.
Jackson CAnnery- Featuring one BAD-ASS MAN known as Ben Folds
with shades and a guitar. Yessirree. Ben played this like "a bar band
that they used to be" or something like that. The re-entry at the end
came out sounding a little wierd, and Ben was laughing at it, but it
was great.
I was a bit disappointed to not hear Raindrops, Air, or Kate, but oh well.
We gave Robert our lemon that I caught, but he didn't do anything with
it. He just sat it on his stack. But that's okay.
Oh, one more note: If Amanda from E.L. that has that band is on this
list, could you e-mail me?

BF5 guys and gals....
Before I begin, let me say that Ben Folds' self-titled first album is the
best one to date! I love it because it's got so many of my favorites on it.
But I wanted to focus on track #2, My Philosophy. It is my favorite on the
album. At the end of the song, Ben goes off on the piano. He is playing
majorly loud. Then he all of a sudden starts at the low notes and works his
way up to the high ones and right after that it is back and forth between low
and high ones. This is the area of the song I'm concentrating on. Does
anyone remember the airplane commercials on TV for either Delta or USAir? I
think Ben is playing the theme to one of those companies! Whichever one it
is, it is the same on that had the slogan, "Come fly the friendly skies". I'm
anxious to hear what you guys have to say about this. Please tell me I'm not
totally crazy here. Thanks everyone and I hope I've given you all something
to think about. Later guys (and girls!).

Chairers:
It's been a while since I've posted. Actually, it's been a while since
I've read any posts. Sorry.
Alright. Now for what I have to say:
I liked the Godzilla soundtrack a lot, including "Air". The use of
technology and harmony on that song were absolutely superb. However, as if I
didn't already hate Puff Daddy, I loathe him more now. I understand that
Jimmy Page had everything to do with the remake "Come to Me", however any
disrespect to any Led Zeppelin song is disrespect to the roots of pure Rock
and Roll. Turning a LZ song into another piece of RapCrap is not only
disrespectful but sacrilidge. Puff Daddy will burn for this one.
Now for the really big poster: I found one! I found one! I found one! I
was in a CD Whorehouse, uh, I mean Warehouse and there was a HUGE BF5 poster
up on the wall that was a rectangular version of the WAEA cover art. I asked
the salesguy if I could have it and he told me that they were for sale!
Unfortunately I didn't get it. My mother gripes about me putting posters
up in my room cuz it looks so "teenagerish", but my boyfriend picked one up
and he's hanging it up in his bedroom when he moves into his new apartment.
Now I know I should just tell my Mom to go to hell, it's my bedroom and I'm 20
years old and I'll do what I want, but she's paying for half of my car so the
last thing I want to do is piss her off.
And now the grand finale: I finally heard SFTD on the radio!!!! My
boyfriend lost the key to his apartment and we went to the office to get a new
one and it played over their radio. The guy at the desk asked what the lyrics
were and I told him "Give me my money back you bitch" and he said "Good song".
Texas is finally catching up to the rest of the country!!!!!

The magical armchair was originaly called simply the Ben Folds Five Digest.
It was started by Frank as a forum for fellow fans to discus the music, and
keep up with current happenings with the band. Although it had no official
connections iwth Caroline, or the band, the label kept us up to date with tour
schedules, and even gave Frank a lot of free BFF gear to give out as prizes.
Later, after Lollapalooza, the boys even agreed to answer some questions
directly through the armchair. I joined at issue #54, and at that time (I
think) the discusion was about what the name should be. You can look back and
check for yourself in the list archive, at http://oeonline.com/bff/list/. We
voted and came up with the magical armchair because we saw ourselves as all
sitting here in our magical armchairs typing about our favorite band. I think
this was while they were on the lolla tour, 'cause I remember telling them
about the name change the first time I met them, 'cause they were still
calling it "the digest." So there you have it....and lucky you...this is my
first post in forever...
bye now

Subject: too many bruises via grand rapids
i have returned from my 3 weeks of *touring* and am covered in bruises after
the mess in grand rapids last night...majorly annoying crowd who thought crowd
surfing and pushing make a ben folds five show more enjoyable. gotta love
those michigan crowds. it's a sad day when i return from a bf5 show with more
bruises than i got when i took my brother to see pantera and we ran around in
the mosh pit all night. i never thought i'd say this, but i am really looking
forward to the 2 beck shows i'll be seeing....at least with seats it will be
hard for all the idiots to crush me to death.
as for the show, it would have been great if we had been able to watch it
instead of always having to duck down when the crowd surfers got passed over
the barracade. i must give a big thank you to *the girl* who punched that fat
ass blonde in the face after kicking us in the head 3 times. i am typically
not a violent person, but i must say, it was necessary at this show.
if this is what the crowds are going to continue to be like, i don't think i
have the desire to see any more, much less be right up front... it was my
30th bf5 show and the worst crowd yet... and i'm not knocking the band, but
they didn't seem concerned for the well being of the crowd at all. i know
it's hard to say something, but if phil anselmo (lead singer of pantera) can
say 'hey, you guys need to watch out for one another' during a big arena show,
i think ben could say a few words in a measley club. (for that matter, even
jakob dylan says a few words when he sees things getting out of control and
people getting hurt, when they were first starting out in small clubs and just
this year in the arenas...) i'm not saying that something should be said
whenever there's crowd surfing going on or whatever, but when things are out
of control and people are getting hurt, it would be nice.

you disagree**

So anyways, it was my first BFF show - YEAH! I don't have too much to
say... Didn't like the opening band too much, oh well. The sound kind of
sucked, especially at the beginning, but it seemed to improve after some
reworking. I brought a black t-shirt (& it was a Cure shirt) to throw
onstage during SFTD. It was a pretty good toss, maybe too close to the piano
keys, but Ben picked it up & threw it back. Luckily my friend caught it, so
it wasn't a total waste. Did get to meet the band afterwards with my
friends...got my Brick import (w/Mitchell Lane) signed, along w/my newly
purchased Farwell Tour t-shirt. Two downers about the night ..some girl
fainted on me & drunks who commented "I'm here to party!", after which they
pushed & fell on everyone (teenyboppers are not the only evil at concerts).
I know the band played: (in no order)
Philosophy
SFTD
Evaporated
Underground
Steven's Last Night in Town
Julianne
Last Polka - I love that song!
Eddie Walker
Fair
One Angry Dwarf
Selfless, Cold, and Composed
Free Bird (with Snoop, Doggy Dog in the middle)
Jackson Cannery (encore)
I may have missed a few..
If anybody has a complete setlist &/or if they taped the show, please e-mail
me!
thanks

Anyhoo....I heard about the Grand Rapids show last night and I am
looking for anyone who recorded it, as I would really like to get a
copy.
Any show that has Ben playing guitar is high on my wish list.
If anyone can help me out, I would REALLY *really* appreciate it. I do

It was decided democratically. In July of 1996 (almost two years ago!)
there had been lots of discussion about naming the list (up until then
known as "The Ben Folds Five Mailing List"). I culled the top five or so
names from the discussion and put it to a vote of the membership. Out of
about 525 members, over 200 voted and the Magical Armchair was the
winner.
