Subject: thoughts for the dumped

Wow, I just got done reading a good, satisfying Armchair. Not too often
that it happens, but I really enjoy this little discussion we're having
about SFTD. No name calling, no fights, no finger-pointing, just good,
wholesome, respectable discussion that reveals some well-thought opinions
and different ideas, like it should be.

So having said that, I have my own opinion to share with y'all. Song for
the Dumped was not the first BF5 song I ever heard, but it is one of the
best. Why? Because it's honest. When my girlfriend broke up with me, I
was pissed off. Not necessarily at her, but just with everything in
general--my own naivety, disillusionment, and the fact that I let her
borrow my favorite sweatshirt and I probably wouldn't get it back. I can
relate to the song, and I don't think it's about abuse or animosity, just
hurt and frustration and anger, which are very real human emotions.

SFTD is also amazing because there's a very subtle little hint at a very
complex feeling. Maybe I'm reading too much into the song, but at the
very end, the last line is sung very quietly: "And don't forget..." But
they don't finish it with "...to give me back my black t-shirt" They just
end it in the middle of the phrase, as if to suggest that there's
something else the girl shouldn't forget. To me, that something else is
their past relationship--all the good times they had together, the love
they felt, the happy memories that shouldn't be forgotten. Despite all
the cussing and stuff (or maybe because of it) I think SFTD is brilliant
because it mixes these two emotions--anger and longing--so remarkably
well. Listen to the song again with this in mind and see if you agree
with me...

And the other reason SFTD is so great? It's got a kick-ass piano solo in
the middle of it. Man, if only I could play like Ben.

In a message dated 98-05-01 22:31:32 EDT, you write:

I agree with the guy that commented on if Song
for the Dumped became really big and there were fans who liked them only
because of that song, because they would have a real hard time appriciating
songs like Selfless, Cold, and Composed.

That's not true, really. Does everybody that likes Selfless, Cold & Composed
have truoble liking SFTD? True, what you're saying could happen with some
people, but not all... both Selfless and SFTD are some of my favorite songs.

Good call Andy...(on the whole "song for the dumped" thing)

I am sooo distraught these days b/c I'm faced with the horrible reality
that I'm not going to see bff in dallas... I'm in Oklahoma, and it looks
like Dallas is my only chance...This is the hell that is my life... I
would love to get pics or a tape of the show after its all said and
done, though, so if youre gonna have em, please email... thanks

Two quotes from responses to my last post:

1. << To say that any one who likes"Song For The Dumped" probably doesn't
have enough intelligence to appreciate BFF's other songs is ludicrous. >>
2.<<Voicing your opinion is fine, but putting others down in the same breath
for having their own viewpoints is clearly a sign of someone who sees
with tunnel vision.>>
Sorry, didn't mean to stir up things so much. Perhaps I could have phrased it
better , and I did not mean to insult anybody. But I didn't say that anyone
who likes "SFTD" is lacking in intelligence. For crying out loud, I like the
song, though I don't think that it's one of the best on the album.
If I can try to make my point better: I have already heard reports of a few
people who have spent a fair amount of time at certain shows screaming "Do the
Bitch Song!!!" I'm guessing that these are people who came primarily to hear
that song. Maybe these people really like the song because they identify with
a relationship of their own, or they just like the melody or the arrangement.
On the other hand, maybe some of them just like it because it says "fuck you"
and "you bitch". My concern was that if more people that come to a BFF show on
the basis of this song alone, the larger the chance of a disruptive, rowdy
element in the crowd yelling "Do the Bitch Song!!!".
On the other hand, if "Steven's Last Night In Town" became a hit, I don't
think there'd be a problem with people yelling "Do the song about the guy who
doesn't like Cellulite!!!"
I don't think that I put anybody down for their viewpoints, but if it was
interpreted that way, I apologize.

Subject: failure notice

Hello people my name is tony and i've been on the list for a very
long time and i have a story and a mission, here goes: I'n the beggining
of march, i went on a vacation to las vegas, and in the middle of the week
i called my girlfriend to tell her i just bought her a stuffed baby white
tiger (from sigfreid and roy.....wierdos) and i told her and then she was
like..."tony i think we should just be friends.." She dumped my ass over
the phone...while i was on vacation!!! The first words that popped into
my head were "give me my money back you bitch!!".....stupid stuffed
tiger...So needless to say my vacation was ruined (except 2 days later i
met the most beautiful actress in the world..minnie driver, but that's
another story....) So here is my mission, i hope at least some of you will
take it on as your own out of shear compasion for my heartbroken state...
On june 9th, ben folds five and beck are playing here in buffalo. I got my
ex-girlfriend into bf5...in fact, before she met me all she listened to
was showtunes...pretty lame huh? Well, I'm goin with my friends, and she's
goin seperately, with her new boyfriend, this jock dave (incidentally they
started going out 2 days after we broke up) and a bunch of her-lame
ass alternateen "i'm going to see ben folds five cuz i heard that song
brick on MTV!!! yippee!!!" friends. I'm asking for 8 words out of ben's
mouth right before they play "song for the dumped", and those words are
"this song goes out to allison from tony." How fucking great would that
be!! Especially since she hates that song! (more evidence of her horrible
taste in music) I am fairly confident that, after reading this message,
they would do this, becuase...well....they are the coolest guys in rock in
roll!! So that's where you come in fellow armchairites!! I KNOW that there
are people on this list that know ben or darren or robert or at least
their e-mail addresses, and if you do, all i'm asking is for you to pass
this message on to them!!! Cut and paste it into an e-mail!! Print it up
and hand it to them!! Anything! I just want them to get it somehow! On my
end, I'm currently working on getting backstage passes so if no one here
can help me I can try and hand it to them myself. If you can help the
cause, and you do send an e-mail or hand them a note, or tell them my
story, please let me know so i can get excited!!!

thank you,
tony

hey guys,
to andy, rusty and anyone else who agreed with them:

THANKYOU!
a voice of reason!
for goodness sake, why do people have to moan the whole flippin' time?!
i mean, all the people that criticised SFTD - do you have no emotions?? have
you never felt like completely beating the shit out of someone but resorted
to verbal abus cos you're not that violent? (or you don't wanna be
arrested)???!
i can't see why everyone makes such a big deal outof a few "offensive" words
- - it's human nature to be angry after all, and it's a good way of expressing
it.
besides, did anyone else get worried about that e mail saying bff may have
split up|? - incidentally to whoever started that - I'M WATCHING YOU! - i'm
just grateful bff are still together and makin' sweet music!
phew, glad i got that off my chest.
love
em

ps. all you people in the us should be grateful for sftd - i'm not even
gonna get that single being here in the uk :(
so there
