Hey there!
I just got a RE: from the five at their Juno address which told me that
this summer was put down to record a new album! This may be old news in
America, but where I am, in the uk, it's pretty new! These guys are
incredible! They've been together just over four years and they've got a
fourth album on it's way!

The guys will be on TV on May 9th. It's a show called Sessions at West
54th. The show also has Beck on it too, it was great the first time I
saw it, and that was before I was a huge fan of the band, I can't wait
to see it again. I think it's on PBS at 10 or 11, but I'm not too sure.
"Check your local listings" I guess.

Later,
Dustin

Five Bands (or more):

Subject: New Orleans show

Hi Folks!

Last night was the New Orleans show at the House of Blues. Of course, it was
excellent! The band played with genuine enthusiasm, not like when you see them
on tv singing Brick for the millionth time. They were making goofy faces,
laughing, Ben was shaking his butt, and they were talking to the audience
between songs. And, as a special bonus, they even sang "Raindrops keep falling
on my head!" Does anyone know if they have sang this song at any other
concerts (besides the Burt tribute show)?

I am very proud of my fellow New Orleans fans. The crowd was great. And
believe it or not, Brick did not get the biggest response from the crowd. Song
for the Dumped drew the most applause and cheers, and it was well deserved. I
thought the walls of the House of Blues were going to come down from Ben's
pounding of the piano and the cheers of the crowd. That one was a *show-
stopper.* The crowd also seemed to especially like Steven's Last Night in Town
and Evaporated, which a lot of people sang along to.

After the show, I didn't see the band doing their usual "meet and greet." It
was hard to figure out where they would come out because there are like four
separate exits from backstage. I am embarrassed to share this part with you
guys, but what the heck, who else would understand...My friend decided to
charge backstage like a bull and makes a beeline for Robert and Darren. I
lagged behind because I felt like an idiot. One of the House of Blues
employees was screaming, "Can I help you, Miss?" so I was very nervous. My
friend goes right up to Robert and Darren and starts waving me over. My friend
started babbling to Robert and Darren, who were regarding him with a mixture
of confusion and amusement. Darren started laughing his ass off at my friend,
who had a big black spiky hairdo, tinted Elvis glasses and a glitter shirt.
Think Dave Navarro meets Scott Weiland. Robert looked sort of confused, and he
was wearing almost the same shades as my friend, except they were rose-tinted.
I just smiled and waved from a distance and then the security guard chased us
out. My friend said the guys were like, "Hey man, what's up?" and that I
should have gone up there with him, but I really did not want to press my
luck. Up to now, every time I met them has been pleasant. After all, they were
in a restricted area and were probably trying to unwind. The guys have been so
kind about meeting their fans that I did not want to contribute to any
negative experiences or invasions of privacy that might make them change their
views on meeting their fans.

Thanks for reading this far. I did tape the show. It came out pretty good, BUT
it has my drunken friend talking through some of the songs. If I can edit out
the talking without signifigantly altering the show, I will offer it for
trade. It's probably worth it just for them singing "Raindrops."

Later,

Rose

Two things:
1. BFF is in the new issue of Spin in the Singles section for "Brick" -
there's a nice little decription of the song and a picture. They are also
mentioned in Genius Lesson where the author Sean Landers proceeds to bash
them. I already wrote a letter to Spin.
2. Sunday starting @ noon all famous musicians' mothers are going to be on MTV
and Ben's mom is going to be on "Mom's Cut" and she's going to talk about
Ben's video. It's one that I've never seen before, but I haven't seen many BFF
videos. It looks hysterical! (both the video and Ben's mom)
Enjoy it kids, Jen

Song for the Dumped:

As old as this discussion is getting, I'd like to spout my
opinionated ideas for a short time before its conclusion. We have been
groomed to believe real poetry (the true artsy type) works with certain
tools: metaphors, imagery and, in a pinch, dialogue. Sometimes this is
true. But to fully capture a whole plethora of feelings and situations, one
has to revert back to "immature" means of expression-- i.e. (gasp!)
outright statement. To put it another way, just because sarcasm is the
"highest" form of humor doesn't mean slapstick isn't funny. Coarse and
unrefined, but funny.
In my opinion, which I believe to have some merit, since I happen
to have written A LOT of poetry, SFTD could not have expressed its message
in any other way. Hinted at it, insinuated it, yes, but express, definately
not. The narrator is pissed! If I ever run across someone who is completely
articulate when angry, hurt, confused, bitter and jealous, I'm afraid I'm
going to have to hit that person. Hard. Thus, I believe the humor is not in
that Ben says bitch, but in that he's saying it about someone he was just
in a relationship with. Most singers are stuck mourning the loss. Ben gets
to be pissed. Why? Because he's Ben Folds. And that's why we love him.

In a message dated 98-05-05 22:36:54 EDT, you write:

<< show me the mosh pit...>>

<< in answer to your question...no, no mosh pits...listen to the music.. is it
moshy-type music? i think not...there wasn't even any warning signs about
mosh
pits and they even put those up when i went to see tonic, k's choice, and
verve pipe which obviously would not incite mosh pits...so ya know, the five
is def. not big with the mosh pits... >>

Thank you!!! when i was younger (and im not -that- old yet!) i thought moshing
was the coolest thing in the world.. but now im slightly older and prefer to
stand and listening to the band play then have my butt thrown all over the
place.....
heh i think the worst was when i worked the Goo Goo Dolls concert and was TOLD
that these kids tried moshing to "name"...
anyways i think moshing is boring why would i want to get beat up to dance to
music.... <shakes her head>
