I am writing to apologize for my last post, which I haven't read responses to
yet. However, I received an e-mail from someone who wanted to "justify their
actions for leaving the armchair". I will not name this person who completely
ripped apart my post, shooting down just about everything I said. After
reading my post over in her letter, I realized that a lot of the things that I
said came across in a COMPLETELY different way that i intended, and I would
like to apologize to anyone else that was offended by anything I said. I love
Ben Folds Five music so much and I definetely appreciate them for their
talent, above all else. My infatuation with the boys is only a side issue
that came up the first time I saw them in concert. So, if anyone was getting
ready to bash me for being into them just because I think they're cute, or for
not appreciating them, I am setting the record straight. I hope that no one
else took as much offense to my post as this girl did: I certainly didn't
intend it. I just wanted to talk about the concert with someone who would
understand, since most of my friends don't listen to Ben Folds Five. Again,
I'm sorry if anyone's mad.

Hey fellow Australian fans!
I got a reply from Ben Folds Five, and they said that they're thinking about
touring Australia, "one or two shows in the summer." I'm not sure which
summer though, Australian or American. Hope it's American, cause that'd be
way sooner than our summer. I'll get back to you on that one. I'm so envious
about all the people who have been to Ben Folds Five's gigs! They're popping
up everywhere in America, and it's so rare for them to come to Melbourne,
Australia. Hopefully, they'll be coming to Australia soon!

This is a long review - if you don't want to read it, the other thing I
wanted to say was that there was a review of the LA show in the Times
Monday; if you want to see it, email me and I'll transcribe it.
San Diego (versus LA, from a this is my third BFF concert perspective)
the boys seemed more tired this evening, but then again, i don't think I
was paying that much attention at the palladium, I was too excited to be
there. Who can blame them after Vegas, LA, San Jose, and SD all in
a row - the drive from LA to San Jose and back to SD must have been
fun. Anyway, thinking back, both shows were very low on banter, as far
as I could tell. Fashion update: Ben - white long sleeved retro "chain
link fence/chicken wire" maroon patterned shirt, olive green pants, dr.
marten-esque boots which he used for the opening chord of one of the
songs; darren - light blue shirt remarkably resembling that of the los
angeles show; robert - denim heather blue t-shirt with Chicago multiple
times in multiple fonts in navy, navy collar and sleeve rings, green pants
like Ben's. Ben did another song about Robert's shirt and how
much he liked the way it fit. Superdrag was much more enjoyable second
time around
- - familiarity is supposed to increase your liking, according to my social
psych class. My friend noticed the singer was wearing converses. rhythm
guitarist still looked not very excited. Almost identical setlist for
Superdrag as LA, but this time the drummer invited some guy from the front
row to come play one of the cymbals on the last song. Cool. The crowd:
21 and up, though I thought some people near me must have had fake id's.
Definitely an older, more relaxed crowd than LA. Lots less dancing, but
plenty of enthusiasm. Not as much singing along, I don't think. San
Diego's funny - Superdrag went on at 8, but when we got there at 7:30,
there were only like 3 rows of people by the stage. Another 50 people
sitting in the stadium seating in the back, but only ~150 people total.
But by the time BFF came on, the place was pretty full, though not nearlyu
as packed in as LA (I could have flung my arms out in SD and not hit
anyone, in LA the same action would probably have taken out 4 people).
The boys' set was almost half an hour longer than LA, with three additions
I had hoped for - Missing the War, Kate, and Uncle Walter, plus Dr.
Pyser, but minus Smoke and Evaporated. I don't have the full list (Larry
probly does). The guys, for all their being quiet between songs, were
energetic as hell during the songs. Robert was jumping like crazy, and
Ben was using forearms, legs, fists, everything to pound the ivories.
Darren - as many faces as usual. Other than that, sound problems all
night - I don't think Robert was ever satisfied, the melodica broke,
feedback plagued us off and on. All in all, though, it sounded louder
than LA - maybe due to the venue being about half as big as LA. Video
screens were playing shots of the band from several cameras; nothing
exciting except it distracted Ben for a while as he says. My tape's not
so good on account of it being a longer than normal show, and I don't
think it sounds as good but so far I've only listened to it in my car
on the highway at 80 mph. But if you want it, I'd be happy to trade it as
well.

Subject: The Shoreline: Tall Guy Strikes Again
Hola mis amigos...I just thought I'd report to y'all on the "Shoreline End of
El Nino Mother's Day Extravaganza" show. I got there way late, like at 6:30
(the show started at 4) so I missed Black Lab (who?) and Superdrag (Damn! I
really wanted to see them!) but I did get to see about half of the Reel Big
Fish set. They were cool! I mean they're not especially creative, but almost
all of the guys in the band are incredibly cute, especially the trumpet guy
Scott, and that's all I care about. So I had fun pretending to skank. Then
we waited and waited, and FINALLY Ben, Rob, and Darren came out. I acted like
a major geek and screamed "DARREN!" at every opportunity...I think I scared
the people around me. But I don't CARE! I had so much FUN! I have to say,
though, that this concert wasn't as good as the November Fillmore show or the
February Warfield one. I don't know if it was the size of the place or what,
but it just wasn't as high-energy or something. They're just better in
smaller venues. But it was still really awesome :) At one point Ben said
something like "How many of you have our first self-titled album?" and a bunch
of people screamed, and then he said "Well you guys are all really special."
(or something like that...I interpreted it as "You long-time fans are cooler"
but that's just me wanting to feel good about myself) AND the tall guy was
there again! (Hi tall guy! I don't know your name so I have to call you tall
guy, I'm really really sorry) So for the third time my friend Will and I
accosted Tall Guy and his girlfriend (wife?) and talked to them for a couple
minutes. I don't think Tall Guy likes us though, 'cause we're just annoying
little kids or whatever, I think we get on his nerves. Sorry sorry sorry! WE
think YOU'RE cool, and I promise I'll get the Fillmore pictures scanned
someday :)
ANYhow, here's what they played (Ben said they strayed from the set list...I
couldn't GET a set list 'cause the stupid guard guy made me leave, but I wrote
down what they played on the back of my KOME free fan thing)

*Underground (without the opening talking...I was so, so bummed. Darren
didn't speak a SINGLE TIME for the WHOLE CONCERT! sniffle sniffle)

*Steven's Last Night In Town, complete with story and dedication to Ben's
English friend whose name I can't remember...Anna or something?
*Fair
*Brick (people had lighters out and were swaying...gag. I mean that's cool
for them, just not something I'm in to. A lot of people sat down,
too...hmmm.)
*Raindrops (he messed up the verses again! heehee)
***Rob has bass problems...he missed the last note of Raindrops, he said "I
think we should play it again." but they didn't! oh well***
*Julianne w/ salsa intro
*Eddie Walker (Again Ben mentioned that it was about looking at pictures with
a guy in a halfway house, and a bunch of people LAUGHED! So he goes "Um, it's
not really funny, but here you go." and then I yelled "I'm sorry!" and the old
guy who was smoking pot by himself in front of us laughed at me.)
*Uncle Walter, complete with an explination of what it's about! Too long to
post in here though, this post is dragging on enough already.
*Song For The Dumped...Ben let the audience fill in on the "Well F*** YOU
TOO!" parts. There were no black t-shirts thrown.)
*Evaporated (My favorite! Tall Guy was surprised that they played it...at
least he seemed like it when him and his girlfriend/wife lady walked by us at
the end.)
*Jackson Cannery (Darren's drumstick broke and flew Waaaaaay up into the air,
I think he caught it but my friend Will says he missed. Darren, miss? I think
not.)

Ya know, I'm starting to get a little tired of hearing people complain
about what others post on this list. There are a couple of you who seem
to be under the misguided impression that, because you've been on the
armchair longer than others, that makes the things you say FAR more
important than what newcomers have to say. Here's an idea; if somebody
mentions a topic that has already been discussed by you, scroll down the
freakin' page. Obviously, if the person is new, they are not going to
know of the conversations or debates that have already taken place on
the armchair. I'm fairly new to this list myself, but I have no
intentions of refraining from commenting on whatever I damn well feel
like, and I hope that others here would not be afraid to do the same.
I mean, if it really is that important to you, then award yourself a
little medal of honor for being on a mailing list longer than other
people. And keep on pretending that this makes you a bigger, and
therefore a better fan. But please do us lesser fans a favor, and keep
it to yourself.

Hey guys, am I nuts or did I read something about the boys recording a new
album back in March? If so, when did they have time to write new songs, what
with the constant touring, and why arent they playing them at their shows?
Supposedly the new album is supposed to be out at the end of summer, but when
have (or will) the boys had time to record? Someone, possibly Frank, should
know the info. Thanks

Does anyone know where bff are playing in Aus when they come here in
august? So far there has been no mention on the tour updates i've
been getting and i want to book early so i can actually see them.
If anyone knows, could you could let me know, i'd really apriciate it, email me
or post it, I'm sure I'm not the only one waiting to find out.
Also, last week, Brick was no 2 on the JJJ request fest or whatever
it's called these days. My family were amazed at how I managed to
hear the first few notes of it on the radio in the next room when
they couldn't hear anything. Guess I'm just tuned into hearing their
music. Heard Stevens last night it town again on the radio. is it a
single or what?

Everyone on here is saying the word "teenybopper" as if it's a bad thing.
Do y'all remember what you were like when you were 13? Lemme think about this
for one second....
When I was 13 I was just getting over my crush on Jordan Knight from New
Kids on the Block. I just decided to trade in my Barbies for YM magazine. I
still listened to Tiffany and Debbie Gibson cuz I wanted to be just like them.
I bought singles rather than entire cassettes (CDs weren't very big back then)
cuz my Mom only gave me $10 to go to the mall with. I liked what I heard on
the radio and knew nothing of any other kind of music nor did I care.
So next time you call a fellow young Chairer a teeny-bopper, you just
remember what YOU used to be!!!

went to the Shoreline show the day after, I think that one was better. Ben
practically explained what every song was about and where he got the idea
from. Was anyone else at this show or the LA one?

P.S Hi Erin ( I think) Im sorry we left without saying goodbye. We had to
drive back to Berkeley that night, well morning, it was 12 after all. Then I
had to get up and go to the Shoreline concert. It was well worth it though.

Okay, the Tabernacle is a KICK ASS VENUE! I was there to see OLP two
weeks ago. Actually, BF5 is playing the Cellar (of the Tabernacle) which
is about the size of the Roxy (which won't mean much to y'all). It's not
a big venue, it's kinda small, but not real small. Everything in the
room is painted, and there are these steps that lead down from the Lobby
into the main room where the band plays. What's that room called anyhow?
They have balconies, w/ a couple plush seats, but you can only see the
stage if you're practically leaning over the balcony. I heard the
Tabernacle used to be a church. and it was the House of Blues. It's an
all-ages venue.. That's it.. I'm there for June 14th show, though.
Hey, wasn't that show at the Roxy in October kick ass?? I was right up
front, standing beside Sara. Yes, Sara was the girl who got to sing the
intro to "Underground" w/ Ben, Darren, and Robert.
