With the passage of 1,000 issues of the Armchair I'd like to thank
everyone for their contributions to the success of the list. We have a great

Okay, I gotta back my boys Markus and Erik up here. For those of
you who can remember me from the 5 or six months when I've left, wow,
you've got determination sticking around here so long. For those who
don't, let me lay down the deal. I'm Eric Patton, 20 yr. old junior at the
U of Michigan. I've only been a fan for about a year, but I got in close
with the old guard really quickly, and became a true Helmet Head. Now, I
was just at the Grand Rapids show last week with a couple friends. Of
course, like any true fan, I was right up in front of the stage. Where I
was treated to the experience of drunken assholes, mosh pits during slow
songs, and bodysurfing. Now don't get me wrong, I'm down to do the Toxic
Waltz (if you don't get the reference, you're too out of the loop to be
any good anyway) with anyone who'll step up. But at the right times. In
the right places. Not at a concert where people are supposed to be one big
happy family of geeks, freaks, and assorted wierdos. Ben Folds Five is
marvelous, artistically wonderous, fun, exciting, and bitterly happy
music. Repect the band, love their music not because Carson, Toby, and
that other long haired twit on MTV tell you that it's cool, but because
they are three goddamned talented musicians, and your soul can be saved.
If not, well, I'm planning a little Jyhad against the Stupid, and you've
chosen the wrong side. ;) Laters, and if you wanna flame me for saying
this, come to me with your problems, 'cause I'm just posting to this list.
Love, peace, and hair grease. HAIL ERIS!

ERIC

Hey BF5 crazies!,

This is Miller and I just got back from The G105 Big Shindig in
Raleigh on Sunday. I had FRONT ROW & CENTER tix for our guys and they were
dazzling! That is the closest I've been to them. At one time, Ben leaned
down and got right in the face of the camera that was like 2 feet away from
me. It was great!

Ok, so about the meaning behind AIR...

During the Big Shindig when our boys were playing, Ben told a humorous
fireside nighttime story about 12 guys. He just took the mic and it got
really quiet and he said something to the effect of the following:

"There was once these 12 really hairy, fat men who got together for meetings
or something and one time they decided to go swimming in this lake one night.
Well, they were all swimming and one of the guys found a tunnel that was under
the surface and all of them proceded to follow him through it. The other side
came out to a dead end, but there was a place to come up and breath in a
cavern-like pit. Well, evidently, one of the guys was clautrophobic and when
he resurfaced on the pit side, he was hyperventilating and going crazy. He
was VERY reluctant to go back to the other side and go under water like that
again through the tunnel. So the guys had to literally drag him forcefully to
the other side, under the water, through the tunnel, and up for air at the
lake side. I think he passed out either during or after he came up. Well,
after he was done telling the story, I was almost 100% sure they were going to
sing "Air", but instead Ben was like, "And that story has absolutely nothing
to do with this next song" and then they played 1 Angry Dwarf instead! It was
crazy. So I'm guessing that's what "Air" is about. Hence the "I pulled him
in, he wasn't breathing", "They hold my hand, and ask me to pull through", and
I think Ben is pretending like he was there (b/c he takes a 1st person
approach). I can't explain every little detail about the song and how it
relates to the story, but I think this is what it is about...."Coming up for
air!"

I know some of you guys thought it was about Godzilla! Well, let me just
direct this next comment to those of you who yelled at me for not knowing
about the tribute to Gershwin in "Philosophy" and also thought AIR was about
Godzilla, the monster, ..............

HA! YOU'RE FLAT OUT, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT WRONG!!!! That was especially devoted
to LAUREN, Super Bitch!!!

Now I'm one up on you guys! So there, eat it! Alright, I'm done wallowing!
Email me if you have any questions or comments. Sorry for such the long post!
Later guys (and girls)!

...still getting off the bus

Hey y'all!

For those of y'all who remember me: I'm back!
For those of y'all who don't know or don't care: I know you are but what am I?

Kidding! Of course. Seriously, I used to be a Armchairian in fine standing.
Now I'm not so sure as for the past 5 or 6 months I slid down beneath the
cushions and hid from the crowds. I was beaten, battered and bruised, but
have decided to put all thast behind me and see what was new on the MA (you
know what that stands for, don'tcha?)

So on to the Bentent: getting geared up for the Sean Lennon/BeFeF/Beck
extravaganza this Saturday at SPAC. (Side note: isn't it odd that I can't
just say Lennon... I have to qualify that with a Sean... it must completely
suck to have to work in the shade of a Rock Deity who just happened to
provide a Y chromosome for you. But I've heard good things and am
pleasantly anticipating a jolly ol' time at the opener. But I digress...)

Oh yeah... I suppose I should mention my pedigree. I was bred as a BeFeFan
since about the age of 6 months. I was trained to respond to excellent
music by wagging my tail in time (this despite the handicap of a tin ear).
After about 3 months of solid training (including beatings and the
ever-despised choke collar) I was able to respond adequately. This training
paid off in spades 26 some odd years later when I caught "Underground" on
WFNX-Boston. My tail started wagging, but as I never caught the name of the
band, I was brought up short like a dog misbehaving on a walk. Later that
year, I again caught the unmistakable strains of the band... and this time
they were back-announced. I immediately fell in love with the band's music
and humor and have been a rabid fan ever since (despite the constant
muzzling by my owners). My best pentagonal experience to date has been
ConBENtion '98. I hope to be an attendee at all future ConBENtions.

I am a proud member of the RF, Eric's JATS, Matthew's Militia, and the COF.
I've met the FL in person. I can carry on multiple conversations by e-mail
at once. I am anti-moshing and pro-hibition (and there's a question... if
people can be inhibited, why isn't anyone ever hibited?). I intepret dreams
for hire and give massages for free. I am lactose-tolerant and less witty
than you think. I have a personal animosity against a waiter at the Hyatt
in Chicago. I am unable to leap tall buildings in a single bound and I am
much less powerful than a silent 'e'. And that is about it.

Thanks for reading!

Subject: Second chances...

So, for the month of June, we're all giving the Magical Armchair a
second chance. We know how great it used to be, and we want it back!

Allow me to introduce myself: My name is Scott, and my claim-to-BFF-fame
is that I was one of the first 3 (4? 5?) people to have a webpage
devoted to the band, and I am the one responsible for the BFF-FAQ. I
used to be a more active member of the MA (I've been a subscriber since
way back with Michael Bluejay took his keyboard to a concert to have it
engraved by Ben-- if you don't remember that, then I've been on here
longer than you and am thus a trillion times cooler), but I've let
myself become a hardcore lurker the past few months.

Well... not anymore! Or, not for June, at least...

So please, guys... let's make this list what it used to be. No arguing
or flaming or asking information that's been covered a million times
before (yes, it's a phone ringing in SLNIT, yes Brick is a good song,
and yes Ben is a gay crackh-- er, forget that last one). Just good ol'
BENtent for the masses; for instance: I've been wondering for a while
what the photograph on the cover of the eponymous album is actually a
picture of. Anyone have any ideas?

I'll be at the show in Atlanta (little ol' me is flyin' down from
Madison just for the show)... find me, introduce yourself, and lets be
friends!

scott

(Warning, this post is full of Val's ranting and raving.)
Gosh darn it.
Being a BFF fan in Canada isn't very good. I live in Toronto, a huge city
full of BFF fans and they have only come here three times in the last 2 or
3 years. The first time was a 19+ show and since I'm only 16 I couldn't go
and I've only been to one other one but I'll see the third show tomorrow,
yeah!! Up here I can never get my hands on their singles and it took me a
few months to get the first album, then I tried to get my hands on a poster
and I finally did get a promotional poster for WAEA and it's been out for
ages already. I've only seen one video, the one for brick. It would be
greatly appreciated if the band came more often and played smaller venues,
the show tomorrow is in a stadium for aroung 16, 17000 people, how personal
is that?
But enough of my complaining cuz then I'll be giving the impression that I
hate them but I really do love BFF. They are number one in my books.
Have a nice day/evening/night
Val

OK. OK. There has GOT to be someone out there who can make Real Video files
out for their videos. C'mon..If we can download entire episodes of South
Park...I can't begin to imagine that a 3 and half minute video is
impossible...SO if ANYONE out there has the software and free time. Let the
people of the armchair know. I'm sure I'm not the only person out there who'd
like to see this.

well hello hello.

ive been working so i havent done much posting lately..just skimming.

sooo i bet ive missed some stuff, but not all!

i finally saw the video for sftd the other night and of course i
recorded it. the best part for me was right after the japanese verse
when ben did his little pointing and shaking his groove thing dance. its
only about 2 seconds long or something but it was so funny it was worth
it.

i am wondering aloud if anyone on the list is a barenaked ladies freak.

im a newbie fan of theirs (just about a week or two) because a friend of
mine sent me a tape of 'maybe you should drive'. and i bought 'rock
spectacle' the other week too and i love them now. im gonna buy gordon
and born on a pirate ship on thursday and i just wondered if anyone
could hook me up with some good bootlegs.

just wondering.

i finally also got a copy of 'air'... good but worth the 10 bucks i paid
for a tape. not worth a cd. the puffy thing sucked. sooo unoriginal. but
good jimmy page work on it... michael penn also was good.... as was
jamiroquai. i was pleasantly suprised.

hmmm anything else....

OH YEAH i just read that thing about darrens head. sooo funny. 'make
love to the camera, darren!' i especially thought it was funny because
in the sftd video the other two are goofing off majorly and darren is
kinda normal. but he gets a couple of close ups that the others really
dont get....hmmmmmmmm.

WELL ill send my love to everyone and some good candy too.

'ill send my best...cause god knows youve seen my worst'

this is my story humble and true, take it to pieces and mend it with
glue.
