Aieee! Atlanta was awesome, the perfect ending to the US leg of the
summer tour. I met many cool people from the mailing lists--hey everyone,
thanks for making the extremely hot wait in line extremely fun! The crowd
at this show was great. They were well-behaved and quiet and really
seemed into it. Snuzz was awesome, and they're such great guys. I wish I
could have gone with Britt and Eddie to see The Voltage Brothers, but
Waffle House with Kim and Katie and Sonny and co. was calling. Everyone
freaked out when they got to see for themselves that Chuck is a taller
version of Ben, with a beautiful smile (thanks for demonstrating for me
and Alessa, Chuck!), I got a kick out of that. I hope it was in response
to the crowd, butthe boys were so energetic, not much improv (great metal
ending to the show!), but they just seemed to riding the same happy vibe
as the crowd. It was great. Mad props to Katie and her mom for getting
me into the meet and greet. I saw someone asked about the guys' plans
after the tour, we asked Darren the same thing and he said that Ben was
going to finish up Fear of Pop, and he was going to do a cut for a
compilation coming out on Mammoth Records, and then they were going to do
the album. And I asked him about recording the album, if Sony was going
to ship them to some slick LA studio or if they were going to keep it..I
dunno, homey, and he said that they have complete control over that and
were going to keep it...homey (for lack of a better word). Yay! Anyway,
I've rambled long enough, and I'm sure plenty of other people will post
about it, but to sum things up--Atlanta kicked ass!

Ginger :)

Damn. That's all I have to say. I just returned from one of the most
amazing evenings of my life. It might seem unimportant to many of you,
but here's my take on their performance at the Hard Rock Live taping.

Well getting into the city when it's raining during rush hour is very
unfun. The Lincoln tunnel was jam packed, and I didn't make it to get
the ticket for my dad, but by some strange bit of luck, a very nice
security guy let us in. Then we went into the place (about 400 people,
maybe less) and moved to the left side about 10 ft from Ben. They
started off with Fair, which was cool, and I didn't write the rest of
the Setlist down, and I don't have much memory... Anyway it got time for

Robert to bring out the upright for Brick. The whole room was silent,
when I scream out, "EVAPORATED!" Ben looks over, gives a slight nod, and

they played it! It was amazing, and I'm sure anyone who was there
remembers it. Then they played Brick and Dwarf, but some guy came out on

stage and told Ben that they screwed up the lights for Brick and Dwarf
and they had to do at least Brick over...(it was in their contract, says

Ben) so Robert says, "It's okay, we play this song different every time"

so Ben starts playing it really fast, and Darren comes in, then they
played half the song at like double the speed. Forget the Techno version

of Brick, this Disco one blew it away. By far the best BFF experience
I've
ever had. Sorry for taking up so much space...

The atlanta concert was really cool. I won't post a really long
review cause I'm sure other people will. Anyway, the only
disappointment was that they didn't play Pyser. But it was pretty
cool when Ben climbed up on the speakers or whatever and threw two
piano stools on the keys. Well, it was a great concert!!!!

                          whatever and ever....

Shit, I never did see my post about the show taping either. What
happened? Here it is again. Sorry.

Okay, my turn for a long post. First off, the person I promised my
extra ticket to apparently never showed. I waited outside, standing on
the corner of 54th and 10th, in the pouring rain with people on line
wondering who the asshole was pacing up and down the block for an
hour. After everyone had already been led inside, and one of the
guards said to another "That's it, we're full, no more", I panicked
and got another nice guard to let me in. Whew! I was on the verge of
being royally pissed, but I'm sure the torrential downpour and
Manhattan rush hour Friday traffic were a key factor in this person's
not showing up. I'm just upset that I got alot of great requests from
some really great people that would have died to go, and the ticket
went to waste. I got inside and sat next to a very quiet, small Asian
girl who didn't seem to want to talk. I can't give an accurate
playlist, but the guys played Fair, Philosophy, Emaline, Alice
Childress(!!), Battle, Steven's Last night in Town, Evaporated, One
Angry Dwarf, Song for the Dumped, among others. After Brick and Dwarf,
Ben was informed that they'd have to redo the two songs due to a
lighting problem during the taping, while Robert told us a story. Ben
was obviously not thrilled with having to perform Brick again and the
guys did a quick upbeat kick ass version before sighing and finally
submitting to their contractual obligation of playing the song. They
never redid Dwarf, opting for Dumped. Way too short of a show and
there was no encore, I didn't stick around for Squeeze, the next
taping. I did have a great time and extend my eternal gratitude to
Frank Maynard for informing us of this show (and the Armchair too, for
that matter!). I bought a beer at the Deli across the street, walked
back to work to pick up my laptop, then walked home to write this.
What a night! Anybody have an air-date for the show? Take care.

Ok, I had to rip off the joygasm term because it's all that could describe the
show at the Tabernacle last night. We waited in line with many other very
cool people (Sanders and those cute Auburn chics...sorry I didnt catch your
names..) for several hours, then finally we got in to see the show. Snuzz
opened. I was the only person who realized that Chuck was not Ben when he
first walked out to set up. Snuzz rocked the house - especially the first
song "Amp" (I got the setlist - yeah!) As for Ben Folds, it was nearly the
culmination of my existence (thats the term I use for the Soundgarden show I
saw in 96). The crowd was perfect - the only downside was the security guards
who were mocking us as we got into the music. They were being such ass-holes.
I enjoyed hearing Air and Evaporated and Uncle Walter for the first time live.

After the show I met Chuck, Snuzz, and Eddie Walker (who had people serenading
him about "Aunt Louise" and "bouncing on her knees"...poor guy probably gets
that all the time.) they were sooo nice to the fans and appreciative. They
signed my setlist.

We waited for 30 min. to an hour for Ben. He came out and signed our stuff. I
asked him if the band ever thought about covering "Bohemian Rhapsody". He said
it was too hard because of the amount of guitar. I still think it would be
cool though. Ben also said the guys had a lot of material that was half
finished for the new album. Lots of lyrics without music and music without
lyrics. He also said that it was all pretty mellow, so he was working on
livening it up. They are planning on cutting the album in October, and the
release date is up to the record company - most likely the holiday season.
Ben's solo album should be out by September he said. It's all instrumental,
which is cool by me.

Darren and Robert followed Ben in coming out 30 minutes and an hour
respectively. They were very friendly and took pics with us. Robert was a
little toasted, but he deserved it. A hard tour is finally over for the boys.
All in all it was an awesome night, and I cant tell you how pumped I am about
the new album...damn its a long way off...

JR--That's very cool that Ben wore your adidas shirt! Very impressive...I
wasn't there or anything, but I can just imagine what that must have been
like. :)

You know the Hard Rock Live thing? Well, do they compile all the live
recordings into a CD or something? Like the MTV 120 Minutes thing,
kinda...That would be cool, cause then we'd get to hear whatever was edited
out...

Could it really be taking that big of a hit on yer wallet if you're doing
2:1? Sounds like a profit to me.

Subject: Atlanta show and Manhattan Armchairs

Hey friends,

So I'm feeling a BFF depression coming on with no more shows for me
for awhile. No worries I guess. I still have the albums and the
bootlegs so I'll have to get by. Thank you to those who reviewed the
June 14th Atlanta show. The set list nearly made me cry. So
impressive! I haven't heard "Boxing" live is such a long time plus
Ben and the boys didn't close this tour with "She don't use Jelly"
like they did in the Spring tour so I missed out on that one this
time around. The bootleg of this show will be a hot item.

About Manhattan, I'm moving to the upper east side on Wednesday
(never been there before) and I'd like some input from Ben
Folds Five-friendly lovely people in the area on the music scene: hot
clubs, the best music stores, upcoming live shows that may be worth
seeing this summer. Please understand, I'm not trying to use the
Armchair as a dating service or anything but I'd love to meet with
some local fans and chat about the band over a drink or something.
Simply and idea. Please send any info to me personally.

Thanks all!

Christian

Hey, just had to share my joy and wonderment after attending my first BF5
show. Thought the Tabernacle had kinda a cool atmosphere and the show itself
was awesome =) I know you all probably have great stories to tell, but my
little humble brush with the might Folds will have to do. Anyway, I sat up on
the 1st balcony on the frist row on the piano end all the way to the wall -
last seat with the exception of a broken one...I thought it was a pathetic
seat, wanted to be on the floor, but my freind wanted to go up there. Well,
to get to the meat of my story, while SNUZZ was playing, who should appear
through the mysterious door at the end of the balcony wall to my left but Ben
and his girl (or I assume she was). They sat down on a step next to me and he
ate his soup or whatever. I didn't want to pester them, but a couple guys to
my right wanted autographs and had a pen, so I asked if he could sign 'em but
the girl said to wait cuz 50 people or so would start comng over if they saw
him signing. I kinda gave up hope, but she later motioned for me to hand the
stuff over and he signed them =) Wished I had something more original than a
ticket stub to sign, but I really wasn't expecting an autograph in the first
place so it works for me =)
Anyhow, couldn't see too well from where I sat on the baclony - got the view
of the back of ben's head the whole time...but hey, I was there and that's all
that mattered to me and the sacrafice was worth it considering my company
that had sat nearby. I thought they played awesome and put on quite a show
nontheless.
Chuck Folds later came up to the balcony and sat where Ben had been earlier,
and the girl that was with Ben sat in the broken chair next to me for a bit,
but it was kinda uncomfortable she said so she moved. The rest of SNUZZ later
came up there after Chuck left and stayed there for the rest of the show.
Cool. Would've gotten their autograph, but alas no pen was to be found =(
Anyhow, would've stayed afterward for a bit, but the friend I was with was all
mopey and wanted to get home soon so I had leave to shortly =( Despite that,
I had a really awseome time and was thrilled beyond words to hear them live.
Still can't believe both of the Folds sat up in the balcony near me, ah yes,
what an honor and whatta show =)

I think it was JR who wrote this about the Atlanta show;
"The crowd was lame. Very few real fans there, the ones that were
weren't loud or excited. Get your hands in the air, people."
Uh, what? Where were you standing? I was up in the front row, infront of
Robert, and everyone around me was singing, jumping, clapping, and
dancing. We were having a great time! I don't think I've ever been more
into a show. Even our friend who wasn't as into the band as the majority
of us were started jumping up and down w/ us.
And whenever I would stick my hands in the air, I would end up slapping
the hands of the ppl behind me. ESPECIALLY during SFTD.
You were just standing on the wrong side of the stage!
And by the way LAST POLKA WAS AWESOME! I've never been so excited to
hear a song before. That's gotta be one of the best songs live.
The only thing I was disappointed about was that they didn't do Kate.
But that might have been in poor taste, considering Ben's g/f was
sitting on the stage. hehe..
Later ppl!

Was it just me or was the show in Atlanta very fucking loud? Maybe it was
because i was four rows back, maybe i'm getting old. Anyways, the show was
really good, and there was some kind of heavy-metal vibe or something. The
Tabernacle was a nice place. Did anyone go into the bathroom? I get done
taking a piss, and i go past the sink(I don't believe in washing hands..ever.
You should see them, it would make you sick, it looks like i got black
sheepskin gloves on) and there is one of those guys who hangs out in the
bathroom, and he grabs me and squirts soap in my hands so I had to wash them.
Now they look like they've suffered a third degree burn. Did anybody else go
to the bathroom and see this guy? He seemed out of place. I don't remember
much of the concert, just that bathroom guy. The weird thing is, I'm not even
sure he worked there.
Actually the show was really good.
