COMMERCIAL SPAM
Occasionally, despite the safeguards, an item of commercial spam gets
into the Digest. When it does, please ignore it - I'll try to track down
the perpetrator.
BINARIES
Another reminder: Please do not post binary files (JPEGs, etc) to the
Armchair. They are generally unreadable (because the list server strips
out the header information that is necessary for most mail readers to
decode them), and inflate the digest to a huge size. Last week's binary
post ran that issue to 89k (the usual maximum is 20k) and caused the
issue to bounce from about 50 subscribers' e-mail accounts that could
not handle a message that large.
If you wish to share a picture with the listmembership, please either
(a) post a URL where the picture can be seen, or (b) offer to e-mail the
picture to those who would like to see it.

Hi~
I'm really new to the list and felt kinda scared to post considering
my screen name and the toadyrange person, but just so you know, my screen name
is about the band toad the wet sprocket :)
hmm, covers of songs I would like to see...i think Nirvana's "smells
like teen spirit" could be really awesome...hey, tori amos did it ;) also,
something by the cure or the smiths.....
and about the guys being rude, I've never met them, but that is the
first time I've heard negative stuff about them. there is nothing cooler than
meeting a favorite band and them being very nice and sweet to you :)
also, good luck to the people working on the fan club, it sounds really great
:)

Subject: Drew Carey Covers
Someone mentioned here that the boys should cover the theme from "The Drew
Carey Show" My question is this; which one? The series originally had Drew
singing a little swing ditty called "Moon Over Parma." Then, they used a
dance sequence from a past episode done to the song "Five O'Clock World."
Now it's another dance number, actually shot in Cleveland (the setting of
the show) along to the Presidents of the United States of America's cover of
the Ian Hunter song "Cleveland Rocks." Any of 'em would be cool, in my
opinion... And, to throw in my two cents on the cover topic, and to stick
with PUSA, I think it'd be awesome if the guys did the Presidents' "Love
Delicatessen," from their final album, "Pure Frosting." Great disc, plus it
has the above-mentioned "Cleveland Rocks..."

OK - so I'm driving down the road listening to a tape that my husband
very kindly made of downloaded realaudio files of BF5 stuff and
"Raindrops Keep Fallin'..." from the Bacharach special comes on. As has
been noted before on the MA, Ben flubs the first verse. (BTW - on the
video there are camera shots at this point of both Darren and Burt,
who's conducting, laughing. I wonder if they're laughing at Ben's
misreading of the line or at Robert's bass kicking in. Even through the
stage monitors, it must be REAL LOUD. It rocks. Totally.)
Ben's line flubbing triggers a memory that I thought I'd share with
other strangely obsessed BF5 fans. I was 11 years old and in 5th grade
when "Raindrops..." first charted with B.J Thomas in 1969. (Do the
math.) I loved it because it was from the soundtrack of my favorite
movie, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" with Redford & Newman.
(First time I ever heard the word "shit" in a movie. My, how times have
changed.) The song was nominated for an Oscar and Thomas sang it on the
Academy Awards and, yes, my children, he transposed the first and second
verses and screwed up in front of tens of millions of viewers. I was so
embarassed for him! (Of course, as a pubescent girl of 12 by that time,
I was pretty much embarassed all the time anyway.) Why I remember this,
I have no idea....
I'm sure there's no cosmic synchronicity or anything...

they're (Weezer) is coming out with a new album. It's really weird how many

Hi, Fivers.
All I've been able to do since the BFF Toronto show has been lurk, and
there's been plenty to lurk through as usual. Let's see what I can
recall to which I can respond.
I was going to send a review of that Molson Amphishithole show (Darren
did a nice chat with Kim Hughes on The Edge where they were *really*
looking foreward to working on a new album, their set was too short as I
figured, tho' Ben did some nice butt-wigglin' and Robert was a vision in
those big monitors, and I have no right to bitch cuz I got in free, so I
was a happy girl - and everyone should see Beck at least once in a
lifetime), but I had to slog through that whole snotty fans vs. stupid
fans vs. those in the middle and the RF well-intentioned infiltration,
and by then my time was up. A couple months passing seems to sharpen my
editing skills anyway. But I'd still like to give big fat props to
Jessica in NE Ohio for providing a voice of reason and jerking around
all of the combatants with that fake rumour. Bless you and your
shrubbery and keep covering the farmland between Cleveland and
Youngstown.
I noticed another Val from southern Ontario turned up (fortunately, I
prefer Valerie), and it's been good to hear another solid voice from
here, especially since the BFF juggernaut has virtually ignored the rest
of Canada (I feel bad for that person in BC, for example, who'll have to
rely on Seattle listings) and perspectives from here are so few.
(Ralph? Where are you? How's the site coming? Aren't you in the Ring
yet?) And yes, Muchmusic has started playing the SFTD video quite a
bit, tho' I don't know why they waited so long to start. (It is a fine
video, very them I think, and I dig the blue bandaid on Ben's elbow and
Robert waving his arms around and Darren looking somewhere off camera
when he shouldn't.) But my favourite video is still "Kate", which brings
up the matter of that song as a single. I was one of those goofs
whining for it to be a single in North America, and while it was a
single in the UK and it was released as a single to RETAIL in North
America, I still don't think it's been a *radio* single here. I still
think the order has been Bowccl, Dwarf, Brick and Sftd - at least in
Canada, and I don't see them making great variations for all the rat's
ass the label has cared about Canada. So I call on the radio people
here - like Mr. Boyer? - to let me know definitively. Has "Kate" been
released as a single to radio in North America? If so, WHAT THE HELL
HAPPENED? Ooops..sorry. I get emotional about this...
Oh, back to that Val on Internet Direct. I do have to disagree on the
Canadian attitude about Barenaked Ladies. (Oh, no, says Frank, Not BNL
again! Don't they have their own damn lists?) No big shock talk of
them has turned up here, since they're also a smart band capable of
three-part harmonies and walking a line between wacky and heartbreaking.
BNL has been around for about 10 years, when they put out that
history-making indie cassette, then Gordon was EVERYWHERE a bit later,
and like every domestic band except the Tragically Hip that actually
gets successful in Canada (quite a feat in itself), people got tired of
them, especially as they got a teensy bit less goofy. So BNL sort of
hit a wall. Then they hooked up with Terry Mc Bride (Nettwerk honcho
and manager of Sarah McLachlan) who was genius enough to make them tour
like dogs in the States and create Rock Spectacle, and with a little
luck - voila! BNL blows up in the States. And Canadians being who we
are, BNL starts getting noticed again because of that success, and
Canadians are a little proud of them and a little snotty too. (Remember
that bantering in the MA about BFF selling out? Imagine how much of
that there must've been on the Ladies' lists!) Now, Canadian radio is
all over Stunt, and we'll see how it goes. But I don't think BNL is a
joke - at least not for a while. They're a Canadian band who finally
made it over the hump.
Now, I've forgotten what else there was, which could be just as well,
since this is long enough. Oh, although Dan's messages in intention and
practice about the chat thing seem mixed, he did succeed in bringing a
lot of people to the guys' defence with some great they-were-nice-to-me
stories. Thanks for them all, although something still smells vaguely
like manipulation to me. As well, thanks to Frank for laying down the
law on this and the fan war earlier. His is a kind but firm
omnipotence.
And thanks to Frank for letting another too-long post from me make it
through.

Hello people of the chair,
Remember Steely Dan? 70's and 80's rock? Listen to "reelin' in the years".
It's so BFF it hurts! Nonetheless, they're a great band. And about that whole
JKFett crap. I met the band back in October of '97 in south florida. My
personal opinion on the boys is all positive. I' ve met other bands and most
of them have been cool. I've never had any problems with famous people. Like
the other posts, this guy must have some serious brain damage. Get off the
crack, mang. If you like silly-geek-rock check out WEEN!
