To all who care,
I vote for dropping the covers thread, if possible. As I might've said
before (or maybe it wasn't me), the only people with ANY real input into
what songs the Five cover are: Ben, Darren, Robert. Invariably, these
"what songs should Ben cover" threads all come down to your personal
taste. ("I just picked up the new Sarah McLachlan yesterday and it was
SOOOOOO good! Why doesn't BF5 cover 'Building A Mystery'? Ben could do
an excellent piano solo over the guitar part and the boys could hit
GREAT 3-part harmonies on the chorus!") No offense to Sarah, but don't
you see how self-absorbed that sounds?
Case in point: Radiohead and BF5 are perhaps my 2 favorite bands
making music right now (esp. since Grant Lee Buffalo let me down with
'Jubilee'), but I do NOT want to see the Five cover ANY Radiohead song,
much less "Fake Plastic Trees." I'm sure Ben would be the 1st to tell
you his voice would NOT do justice to Thom Yorke's melody, 3-part chorus
harmonies or no. Duncan Sheik did a fine cover a few years back -- it
worked 'cuz his voice has the same ethereal quality of Thom's -- and it
doesn't need to be covered again. (Except by me, ha ha.) In fairness, I
really don't want to hear Radiohead cover "Song For The Dumped," for
that matter. Sorry.
Whoever mentioned Jethro Tull, that would at least be a step closer to
the absurdity level. But it would have to be SUPER-pompous, like "Thick
As A Brick." I still wish Pearl Jam had covered "Cross-Eyed Mary" back
in their early rockin' days. Oh well.
The bottom line: Please stop. Just tell us what's currently playing in
your CD player, that'll be quicker.

p.s. um, yeah, if i was an eighth-grader dressing in black to piss off
my parents and thinking marilyn manson was the epitome of cool and not
just an alice cooper wanna-be, i'd probably think the whispering in
"underground" sounded like "beautiful people," too. i bet i wouldn't
even check the copyright dates of the respective albums (ben folds five
and antichrist superstar) just to lay the whole "which came first"
debate to rest.
how about we say they both swiped the entire IDEA of whispering from
the violent femmes and leave it at that? :)

on the covering thing again. I agree with I think it was Jordan (?)
about the guys covering the Whitlams. I think its cause Tim Freedman
plays the piano (electronic, oh dear) on most of the songs and cause the
Whitlams' songs are so perspectivey and about very real seeming people,
just like the ones Ben and the guys write.
Yeah 'Gough' would be a good cover but it probably wouldn't mean
anything to BFF cause you really have to be an Aussie (my opinion only -
don't flame me), but (like someone else said - acoustic I think?) 'You
sound like Louis Burdett' would be lurvely.
I think acoustic also said 'Chocolate cake' by Crowded House. My yes. (I
also think Crowded House's 'Message to my Girl' would be great, but that
may only be because I love that song.)
This is a very Oz-band-centric post so far.
Actually, I've noticed that Aussies (I will never say Austrayns again
since a certain redhead ruined it) are becoming more active on the
armchair - probably in anticipation of the tour. (YAY - 17 days to go)
For those who didn't catch my earlier post, I'm interested in meeting up
with other fans before the Brisbane show. So email me if you're going.

First things first. My friend Aaron went to see Radiohead back when they did
the Hammerstein show, which I think was the same day that BFF were in NY to do
MTV Live and he said that he saw Ben at the show and that he was actually
standing quite close to him. Of course..perhaps Aaron was toying with my
head..he could be evil like that.
Second thing...why do Japanese imports have to be so expensive!!!! I walk into
HMV yesterday, after already buying the OAD cd at Newbury Comics in Boston and
there it was. The missing Brick single I'd been looking for. Then I saw the
price, 21.99 plus the 5% sales tax. Needless to say, I walked around the store
with it and finally decided that it couldnt not be mine, at least not that
particular day. It was hard to put it down but another day perhaps, another
day.
Conan on Thursday!! WHoooo!!! My friends are trying to make me go out dancing
saying that I can tape the show, but can't they understand that even though
I'm taping it I still need to watch it "live?" Crazy people they are.

Yeah, it's a pretty pointless post, but anyway...
1) Chocolate Cake. Yes. Especially if they covered the live version where
Mark Hart goes mad on his keyboards. Whoever suggested this, I worship you.
2) Radiohead - their songs would not lend themselves to BFF's style, in the
style that they currently are, so they'd have to "Jellify" them (nice
term...) to make them listenable. And Radiohead aren't that good anyway.
3) BFF and Weezer. My god. What a gig. Can almost imagine a collaboration
between the two....
oh, and 4) Em. There I was thinking you had good taste....but Ether? Ick.

Ok cat, I agree that BFF coverin some Steely Dan would be cool,
but please, ANYTHING BUT REELING IN THE YEARS! Classic rock fans of
the world unite- I traveled a great deal around mostly the eastern
parts of the U. S. and in every city with a classic rock station they
all play the same damn songs... "reeling" being one of them. You'd
think with three decades of music (four, in some cases) they could
come up with more than two dozen songs to play!
Whew... okay.. <climbing down off his soapbox>
I would also like to hear BFF do some Doobie Bros (another
favorite of the classic rock conglomorate) or some Blood, Sweat and
Tears. I know they're without horns, but I'd give my right femur to
hear BFF belt out "Lucretia McEvil".

I think Ben's problem is that he likes the Nutri-Grain ones and with all
that Fiber/Fibre.....
Okay, I met Ben and the Boys at the Hard Rock taping about a month ago.
My friend and I stuck around for the Squeeze show taping after the BFF
show (even though Squeeze suck worse than....um...a 10 cent hooker).
Anyhow, as fate/luck/karma would have it, Ben and the Boyz (and one of
their friends, Kevin and Ben's new....whatever) actually sat in the row
of seats behind me and my friend. Anyhow, they were cool as shit and
talked with us before Squeeze came on and stunk up the joint. My friend
and I didn't want to bother them, but they all were very cool. Robert
was joking around with us as you'd imagine Robert would (he said he
couldn't wait for the tour to end so he could put up new shingles on his
house) and they didn't mind signing autographs and Ben even played along
on a joke about signing a "Sorry I haven't written" hallmark card I had
on me for some reason or another.
Any-how, I also met them about a year ago at the Summerstage show when
Morphine were on and they were just as gracious and cool then. Fame,
success and whatever, hasn't affected them at all and they are as nice
as pie (pie?).
Okay, on a deeply personal note...I am moving to Richmond, VA next month
for groovy grad school (VCU) and if there's any of you from there,
please drop me a line (LeathrIdol?). Thanks!
