Thought I'd mention this, if it hasn't been said before. If my records are
correct, Ben Folds Five's debut album was released on July 25, 1995. That's
three years ago Saturday. Think of how all our collective musical interests
have changed since then; where would we be without Ben Folds Five?

So put it in the CD player (if it isn't already) and give it an extra listen
on Saturday. Then bake a cake, light up three candles, and crank up
Philosophy!

Happy birthday!

Gretchen, I was amused by your beefcake story. Then again, it doesn't take
much to amuse me. Anyway, I thought it was fitting that I went on to read a
post saying something about Darren's inability to eat beef. Who knows, maybe
"Kate" really is crypticly (spelling? can you even adjective-ize that word?)
expressing his desire to be able to eat beef?

Anyway, who on this list is the one who sent me that tape? I asked about it
before, but I got no response. I'm supposed to make you a copy of Pontiac,
Michigan and send it express, but I lost your address. Please e-mail me.

Miller-
I agree with you on the Fame cover, and some of the others. I was actually
thinking of that one last week, for some reason. You know a really good
source of possible cover songs for any band? Those TV ads for the 70's & 80's
compilations, and that reggae one.

show at Clutch Cargo's in Pontiac, MI...anyone else get them free around this
time (that tour?) They are maroonish square and have a pic of the three
instruments in white and BEN FOLDS FIVE in that awesome print that I'd use if
I had my own cd. My point for posting this is because if they were a tour
giveaway nationwide there still may be some left...DOUG???

the performance on recovery...
I watched the whole show and BF5 didn’t come on till quarter to 12
(the show starts at 9 and ends at 12) but it was definetly (sp?) well
worth the wait.
I saw people in BF5 tour shirts, are ya’ll on the armchair? you’re all
legends for going and
supporting them anyway.
Um... they walked down the stairs and I laughed at their *very* weird
appearance --
Ben -- was wearing a pink jacket with that feathery furry trim stuff
and a black sequined shirt and his hair looked fairly unbrushed
Darren -- was wearing a curly blond wig and a scarf kind of thing tied
around his neck
Robert -- was wearing a black wig and all his hair was poking out
underneath and also he was wearing a pair of mirrored glasses and
black and he didn’t say much
the host had this little electronic kids keyboard thing and they
played a little rendition of ‘fantasy world’ I think they called it
with Ben pressing one key at a time and Darren hitting the little drum
buttons and Robert kinda trying to look inconspicious.
They didn’t play live but instead aired the australian debut of the
SFTD clip -- the best ever clip I’ve ever seen! especially the little
girl with the iron melting the dolls head and the Japanese bit in the
middle was cool.

Well, for example, let's take bf5's cover of Freebird. (I don't know
where this is availible, I only have it on mp3). The originator of
"Freebird" neither "sucks", or "used to suck", and they are still, as
they always were, "truly fantastic". Sometimes it works (as in the case
of Freebird), and sometimes it doesn't (the defamation of Led Zeppelin's
"Kashmir" by Puff Daddy comes to mind). The reason for covering a song is
not to try to improve on the original, but rather rework it in the
group's own distinct style. So in this way, Miller, a cover of a band
that is currently successful can work, provided it can be done in a
constructive way. Contructive, by the way, should be something more than
"hey, let's do this with a piano!". You can dress it up all you want, but
tuna casserole is still just fish and noodles.

> I mean c'mon, who wants to hear Radiohead being covered?

If you mean this as a swipe at Radiohead, then die in traffic, facist.
But if you mean that bf5's style wouldn't lend itself to the music, I
agree. After all, how are you going to cover a Radiohead tune with a
bass, a piano, and drums? It just wouldn't work. But for the record, I
think that BF5 could do a great remake of ccr's "Fortunate Son".

Well kids, I went to a ska show in Great Barrington, MA tonight (excellent
show, like six bands) Anyhoo...opening band, don't know who they are because
they weren't on the bill and didn't introduce themselves opened with a rousing
rendition of Brick, the ska version. It was quite interesting. So yeah,
there's my *bentent* for the night.

Actually I think M. Bluejay was the person who said this about a month

I'm actually apart of this new "X-Press" team; basically a group of
kids that write for a section in the St. Pete Times(a paper in
Florida).. But anyways the guy who designs the whole page is so cool.
And, yes, he's a BFF fan. We we're talking and he was telling me
about the time he saw them at the State Theatre in Fl. He was telling
me about this "obsessed" fan(who followed them from NC all the way to
Fl) and during "Steven's Last Night In Town" was waving his hands
yelling "that's me!", because his name was Steven..(hehe) Anyways,
the whole point in this post is because he said the show was this
year?? I was like, "are you shitting me!".. Because I went to their
show all the way up in Atlanta because they weren't gonna make it in
Fl. Does anyone know the truth behind this?? Because I think he got
it mixed up with last year.

so, bad idea?

1. I think that we should make a fund to improve the mailing list. it'll
be a regulation that everytime you mention another band you have to donate
25 cents to help improve the mailing list...

2. i think that ben folds five rules. it just rules. Can i get an amen? i
mean, seriously folks, i could listen to this stuff all the time. It makes
me happy, makes me cry, makes me just be myself. Fuck everyone who say's
they don't rule cause they do, i love them, i'd be there fucking dancer or
crew man if i could because i would want to hear all their concerts.
argh...sorry for this bad letter but i thought i'd just let everyone know
how i feel....i want to hear the crowd's roar.

hey y'all

well, as per usual, whenever anything happens over here to do with bff,
i have missed it...but anyway - the NME review - i'm not surprised it
was a bad review cos NME don't seem to like them , or at least i have
never read a good review of them in there...the one for NBP was _bad_
i dunno, perhaps it was the same person. grrr. anyway if it was a review
of the london show then i was there, and i can assure you the audience
loved them, and our boys rocked :)

>S/he described BFF as tiresome, and although s/he said bff gave a fun
show (prefaced with lots of sarcasm, tho), it was clear the reviewer
just didn't like bff songs and let this get in the way of their review
(which SHOULD be objective) S/he didn't mention whether the crowd
enjoyed the show. But reading between the lines, it sounds like bff were
having a good time there and really working hard to give the audience a
good time too.
It didn't make me angry to read it or anything, in fact it made me
laugh, because the reviewer was just so over-the-top biased.

>Read it if you want a huge contrast to the raves that bff normally get.

the guys were on ‘hey hey it’s saturday’ tonight. if you’ve never seen
this show, you couldn’t possibly understand why that response doesn’t
sound very enthused. I mean, despite the fact that they played
'brick', the guys themselves looked mighty fine... Ben in a shirt
bearing the legend "Geoff Harvey Fan Club" which cracked me up. Also,
I think Ben was looking scarily like Dennis from 'Just shoot me' (I
don't usually watch that show, I've only seen it once or twice, so
correct me if I'm wrong). Also the piano was a yamaha, I noticed. I
wouldn't have a month ago, my observational skills are getting better!

Subject: Me Bitching about immaturity(non-BFF)

I love BFF, and I've always for the most part enjoyed reading the Armchair,
but increasingly I find it infuriating. People keep posting the most inane
things, usually in re:'s. Please people, try to rise above a third grade
level of expression. Instead of saying "BNL sucks", tell us a legitimate
reason why you don't like them. I think it's quite obvious that they don't
suck, they are five of the most talented and versatile musicians out there.
Whether or not you like their music is quite another story, and obviously
opinions should and will vary. This example is getting rather long, so I'll
now return to the larger, more generalized point.

1) Please don't tell people what they can and can't post. We've been down
that road so many times, and it has never led to anything fruitful or
beneficial.

2) Posts about other bands ARE relevant, because exploring each other's
musical tastes is one of the greatest things about band lists. If I like
BFF, and you like BFF, it stands to reason that we might both like other
bands, as well. If I give someone the URL for one of my favorite bands,
they might find that they like them as well. This is what is known as a
good thing, aka something that doesn't SUCK.

3) Try to explain your opinions. You don't have to, but it gives your
opinion merit with people who disagree. For example, someone explained
their distaste for BNL by saying "I don't find them as clever as they seem
to think they are...". I personally disagree, and find that comment ironic
from a BFF fan, but I respect the opinion because the person gave a reason
for it, not just an insipid canvass of ability (i.e They SUCK).

This has been rather long and non-BFF related, but scrolling down takes
about two seconds, so I feel no guilt.
