Hi-
Would anyone out there be willing to make me a tape of the World Cafe
broadcast? My local
NPR station didn't carry it and from what I've read, it was awesome.
I do have some stuff to trade, so if interested, please e-mail me at
linc1@hotmail.com
    Thanks,
    Amanda

~yeah, I'm crazy, but I get the job done~

Except, it would only have different versions of SfTD. Isn't that the song
that always changes every time they play it? I heard the one on the Whatever
and Ever Amen CD, Naked Baby Photos CD, and live on Conan. >>

For those of you who might not be aware, there is a different version of SFTD
on the Mr. Wrong soundtrack. It's a bit more polished than the Whatever
version. They do a cascading harmony thing in the middle that I think they
should have left in for the other version. Just thought I'd let you know.

TOAD THE WET SPROCKET MEMBERS FORGE AHEAD WITH NEW PROJECTS

Singer To Possibly Team With Ben Folds

One day after Toad the Wet Sprocket announced their retirement as a
collective creative force, new light has been shed on the breakup and the
future of the band's members.

"[Guitarist] Todd [Nichols] and [bassist] Dean [Dinning] are working
together as a duo," says Chris Blake of Malibu-based Blake and Bradford,
the company handling Toad. "Most people don't know this, because
[singer/guitarist] Glen [Phillips] was the frontman, but Todd wrote or
co-wrote the music to most of their hits: "Walk On The Ocean," "Fall Down."
He and Dean are doing some demo-ing so it's the end of one era and the
beginning of another. How successful they will be remains to be seen, but
there's no reason to think the creativity will just stop."

As for Philips, whose burning vocals had become a modern rock radio
staple in the '90s, will definitely be continuing on as a solo act and
could possibly end up doing some recording with Ben Folds of Ben Folds Five
in the near future.

"Glen is going solo," states Blake emphatically. "He's only 27 years old
and is obviously going on to make a lot more music. He and Ben Folds are
quite good friends and they have been talking about doing some
collaboration. There are also a lot of people in Santa Barbara he enjoys
working with. He will be working very closely with Bruce Winter, who is a
producer in Santa Barbara that Glen really enjoys. I expect Bruce will be
as close to a constant [in Glen's solo work] as there will be."

And the drummer? "Randy [Guss] is a world-class drummer looking for a
gig," Blake adds.

Reiterating the original statement on the breakup (allstar, July 27), the
decision to end the Toad era was due to growing discontent with the
creative process within the band. Blake likens the split to an amicable
divorce.

"There's two creative forces in the band -- Glen and Todd," explains
Blake. "And when a songwriter brings a song into the band, it's filtered by
the band. It's a democratic process, and ultimately the song changes. After
a while, I think creative people just want to see their songs diluted less
and less. We all come to a place in our lives where we say, "I don't want
to live with a roommate anymore. I don't want to have somebody sharing my
refrigerator.' Well, I think they got tired of sharing their creative
refrigerators."

Blake goes on to say that they were "psychologically" looking forward to
a new album, but that the process wasn't as fun as they wished it to be.
"So instead of staying together, bucking it up, and suffering with the
process, it was like, "Okay, so we don't make the crowning, final
statement,'" he continues. "They still like each other. I think it happens
to people in their marriages too, so anybody that's ever been through a
breakup can understand. It doesn't mean you hate the person, it just means
that the annoying things become more annoying."
