WARNING ON OFF-TOPIC MESSAGES
I hate to have to be list-mom again, but consider this a warning that
those who post off-topic messages may be removed from the Armchair. I
consider much of the recent discussion on racial matters to be off-topic,
particularly the personal insults, and the discussion is largely
inappropriate. Like your mom, my judgment may appear to be arbitrary but
in order to keep an all-out fight from breaking out, some of you are going
to have to go to your room.

I heard that the "Sessions.." that BF5 was on was a re-run. When was it
taped? How long ago? Just wondering.

Oh, and those kids dancing in the background were just awesome! Someone asked
earlier, but is the backwards-hat kid on this list? Just curious.

Yep. And it doesn't matter what he paid for it. EVEN if he got it for
free.

If it's worth it to ME to spend X dollars or trade X amount of stuff,
then noone is losing out.

Sure, BF5 is not getting the money. Guess what, people collect stuff,
they always have and the money will not always filter down.

But, I think it's safe to assume that anyone willing to obtain this or
ANY collectible item has probably spent more than his/her share of money
supporting the band with all the "regular" stuff.

Heh heh. Hello everyone! some random stuff
  * I will say it again: EMALINE is going to be *HUGE* we'll have
to turn this into a damn magical sofa soon! :P Even on the inside
of the NBP book Ben hints that he always thought it was "the
single"
  * Anyone else watch DAVE LETTERMAN and notice how often
the band plays BOWCCL?! They play it almost every other night
between commercial breaks (you hear them go into it and when they
return they are ending the song). Guess they really like the song.
(maybe why bff played it with them during commercial when they
were there)
  * Anyone think they have a chance to win that MTV music
video award? Will Ben attened the awards? Imagine Ben,
Darren, and Robert strolling up to the podium, snatching the
awards from some good looking twenty something, then ben
staring out at millions of viewers, lean towards the mike and say:

"Shit yeah, it's cool"

This is in reference to #1161.

In the first MA I recieved someone was flaming someone else for saying
that fans that follow bands around (in this case, BFF) should get more
recognition and are better fans, yadda yadda. It's a shame to head
back onto that topic.

In my opinion, this is as bad as saying that someone that buys you a
big, expensive birthday present is a better friend than someone who
buys you (for eg) a book. A friend is a friend, and a fan is a fan,
who gives a crap if they can or can't afford to follow someone around,
or (to continue the analogy) buy them a big present. The point is
that they love, respect and support you.

As a long standing BFF fan who has only seen them ONCE (yes- once) I
find this debate about who is a better fan offensive and unnecessary.

The light bulb post did seem very familiar, BTW. This is my last
gripe post, I don't want to further contribute to the unmitigated
bullshit that is coming through on MA.

I've been readin the armchair for a while and i've come to some disturbing
conclusions. Many of you get up in arms over seemingly trivial things.
People will make generalizations. Don't take things to extremes. Many of
the posters get flamed the most for describing situations. This young
listeners thing pisses me off too. Everyone was young once, i think. Is
there anyway we can get back to the really cool BFF info & general stuff
that i believe was the original purpose of this list. On that note I would
like to put up a BFF section on my web and ftp server that has BFF cover
songs and some of the harder to find stuff. If you are interested in
helping set that up please email ftp@dragonspirit.com. Thanks

Ooh, guess what!

I was scanning the magazine rack today and I picked up Alternative Press
magazine & flipped through. . .

And who do I see with a full-page spread? Well, three guesses. And if you
don't get it after looking at this message's title, well. . . I feel bad for
you.

It's a picture of Robert, and it says "Robert Sledge of Ben Folds Five and his
Epiphone Les Paul Bass." You can kind of see Ben & Darren in the background.

It's the issue with Korn on the front. . .

You know what, I just realized that I would feel really stupid if this was
already posted. I bet someone posted this last week, and I missed it. Well,
if so, sorry!

Hiya,

Whitney wrote, concerning the sale of Jackson Cannery

"Besides it being illegal (not really concerned about that aspect) it's really ripping off the band that's busted their ass to get where they are today, they deserve & should get every penny that they make."

Shall I tell you why you're not really concerned? Because it's not illegal. It's as illegal as selling a second hand car. As selling your house. As selling a cd you don't want to your mate (which, in reality, is what Bill is doing.). If Bill were to _copy_ the 7 inch, and then sell it, _that_ would be illegal. But he's not. Also, BFF have already made money on the 45. If you think you should give them money every time it's sold on, then I trust that every time you sell your car (now or in the future) you'll give the manufacturer a percentage of the proceeds, because they "deserve and should get every penny that they make".

For me, this is the only chance I'll get, in all likelihood, of laying my hands on this, due to my living in England. Think about it - if it was hard to get hold of in the US, imagine what it'd be like abroad.

"But guys realize something...how much do you think he paid for this, if he paid for it at all?"

I'm sorry? Are you accusing Bill of theft? You're treading on very dangerous territory, my friend. And, granted, Bill only paid a few dollars for this, but it's called an _investment_. Would you moan if someone found a Picasso in their garage, and then sold it for millions? I think not, and this, ultimately, is the same situation.

Please, think before you speak

"Lawyer" Luke.

me? even if you live in Brisbane and know of a chain that stocks

i think it's not that easy to say, "oh, well blacks need to be more open
to 'white' music" because it's not that simple. whether any of you
admit it or not, most people are sheep. they're affected by those
around them, and they conform. if you grow up in a black community,
you're most likely going to listen to the music that many blacks listen
to because that's basically what you're surrounded by. you're told by
the people around you that a certain music is good, and that's what you
grow to like. i'm chinese, and according to stereotypes, i'm supposed
to listen to r&b or something. well, i live in a white town and go to a
school that has only 3 other asians. the majority of my friends are
white and listen to alternative/rock, and.....this is a shocker......so
do i! i say that this is the music i like, but if i grew up in a
different neighborhood, i most likely would like somethign completely
different.

so please, next time you go to a BFF show, pay more attention to ben,
darren, and robert instead of doing a headcount of the minorities there.

Subject: JC 45

Perhaps against my better judgment, I'm going to respond to Whitney's diatribe against me for putting up my copy of the Jackson Cannery 45 for auction.

First of all, I did in fact pay for my copy of that recording. I was just very lucky to look into it when I did (in early 1996, as I recall, long before BF5 were really popular). As for potentially receiving money for that item, I indicated to the people who e-mailed me that my "preference" was to receive either cash or rare BF5 CDs in exchange for the JC 45. I never indicated that other offers wouldn't be entertained; I merely stated a preference. However, if I were to take money for it, do you really think that the boys in the band would expect to receive a portion of the profits? I think that's highly unlikely. Do you think for a moment that when a copy of the infamous Yesterday and Today "butcher" album cover is sold, that the surviving Beatles all expect a portion of the proceeds? Of course not.

It's not as if I (and others) are peddling unauthorized or illegal merchandise. Leaving that issue aside, however, I may ultimately decide to take other goods in exchange for the JC 45; I haven't made up my mind yet, and I won't until early next week. Whitney, who knows? You may have something I'd be interested in, but you won't know unless you submit a bid--and I encourage you to do so, rather than just sulk about how unfair I've been. Actually, what could have been MORE fair? Should I have just accepted the first offer I received? Or just randomly have pulled one of the offers out of a hat? Would that have been fair? I guess maybe if the offer came from you, Whitney, huh? Also, by accepting bids by only those people who contacted me on or before August 4, I gave those who seemed to be the most interested the greatest chance of success.

Sorry, Whitney, but it sounds like sour grapes to me.
