Actually, benfoldsfive.com is ripping both bffweb.com (the official site)
and benfoldsfive.org (John Hauer's page).

1. ben HAS a life partner, he is not looking for a new one (his life
partner is named jesse. I dont know his last name; he plays the drums. I
know this because I saw an article about them in SPIN) ----- What the hell
is this? This is new to me. Is this new to anyone else, or have I just ben
living in a fold for the last six months? I read Spin, and I never saw
that. I want date of issue and page number buddy. I always thought the
inspiration of some of his work was past and current girlfriends.

Ok, I just have to add one more thing about the John Hauer Controversy. I
have no problem with the fact that he's charging for CDs. In fact, I sent
him the money for them a month ago. The problem is that I never got the
CDs and he won't answer emails, so now I'm out $10. So I personally
recommend that you don't buy from this guy-I know that other people got
their stuff, but it seems that he's cut off all connections now, and I've
pretty much given up hope on my CDs. Just a word of advice.

Subject: how can a poor innocent newbie get boots?

it's really fairly simple, but newbies don't take the time to figure it
out.
1) NEVER pay for a boot (unless you're sure all you're paying is cost)
2) NEVER do 2:1 trades (because if you send two tapes and get one back,
you're "paying") UNLESS the person is taking the second tape instead of
postage, in which case it's an even trade
3) NEVER post "i'm a newbie and i don't have any tapes and can't someone
trade me something" to a mailing list of hundreds of people and then
complain that you get no response. nobody is going to offer to tape
"something" for you. :)
3a) BE SPECIFIC. if someone talks about a bootleg, email that person,
as well as the list, and say "i'd really like to get a copy of the
cleveland 7/19/93 show"
3b) don't be afraid to ASK FOR FAVORS. explain you're a newbie. ask the
list if anybody has time to spin you a tape. i usually offer, if someone
posts wanting something specific that i own, and i have time.
3c) BE NICE. BEG :) GROVEL! that's what i did, when i first got on the
counting crows list several years ago and realized there were crows songs
i hadn't even HEARD of! (someone had "goodnight elizabeth" in his sig,
when it was still a boot). i posted to the list for someone, anyone, to
please tell me how to get a copy of that song. a very nice young man
emailed me and offered to make me a tape for free! not even postage! and
the only condition was that i "return" the favor to another newbie someday.
which i did :) with the same condition to her.
3d) offer the following if anybody responds to your pleas: you will send
the tape, the return mailer with your address on it, and sufficient
postage ON IT. this eliminates the need for the person with the tape to
do anything but spin the tape! you pay for postage to them, and the tape,
but you're not paying for the music. it doesn't take long to build up
enough of a collection that you can do "regular" trades after that.
4) OFFER TRADES if you want to get them. say "i need the cleveland
show from x/x/xx and will send you my bootlist" -- and then SEND the
bootlist, not a url :) a surprising number of people won't take the time
to go look at your web page when you're asking THEM for a trade. why
should they? so if you really want a tape, make it EASY for the person
giving it to you to do so.
5) NEVER BE A "BAD TRADER". once you get a reputation for letting another
person send you their part of the deal, and not holding up your end, it's
really really hard to get a good trader rep back.

good luck. hope this helps someone.... this is just what i have learned
over the years and seems to work for me. hope it does for you too.

I've been hearing that other people also had trouble submitting
questions. I tried the other day and it worked fine. I got a message
telling me thanks and to come back to see the answers. However, I went
back the other day to post again....and I think they are done accepting
questions. What the hey....you could still check it out though.....

About this whole BOOTLEG argument; Why doesn't the person who runs
www.benfoldsfive.org (I think his name is John) just post MP3's of all these
songs that are on "The Begginings?" I don't see why anybody needs a $10.00
CD rather than a simple, FREE MP3 or Real Audio to suffice their craving
for a different BFF recording. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have
that CD, but not for $10.00.

I think John should share his wealth for the rest of us to discover. You
never saw CHAD SARLES from the Audio Archive selling his new-found
discoveries to anyone with $10.00, besides it's not yours to sell.
