in 'your redneck past' it sounds to me like ben is clearly saying "your
redneck ASS" one of the times -- at about 2:47. its right after the line
about getting books on tape to learn about holes in space. anyone else hear
it? its blatant to me.

and if you turn up 'jane' in the beginning, you can hear a saxophone. its at
about 6 seconds and at 12 seconds - you'll hear a faint saxophone in the
background - but its not listed after the song that anyone was a guest on the
track.

also, anyone in st. louis -- spencer's (of all stores!) at northwest plaza
has the official ben folds five poster (from benfoldsfive.com) in stock. i
was so surprised to find it locally. anyway, its $5.99 and in the E-7 slot.
(next to backstreet boys and some naked chick.) hurry, cause i bought two.

i love you, goodbye.

dan.

Subject: TUBORM lyrics

I have personally been playing the CD over and over again, trying to get
a good feel. As said before in my last post, I love the music but the
lyrics, I do not get. I think it is personal, there are a certian number of
sad and very personal tracks. Most likely I am in a very upbeat moment in my
life. (Had criminal charges dismiss, accepted to law school, and on the
verge of my boyfriend making a commitment.)
I think some of us are trying to make some odd connections. ("Don't
change your plans" and "Brick")
I enjoy how "Amry","Your Redneck Past", and "Regets" all make a comment
to one another. I related to "Regrets", maybe listeners have to be a bit
older to enjoy it. "I thought about the hours wasted watching TV anf
drinking beer." "and then ended up in jail."
I always play Narcolespy last. I would love BFF to make a theme/concept
album for an entire movie. More of a Pink Floyd's "The Wall" rather then The
Who's "Tommy."

Dear Armchair Digesters:

CORDUROY WAS MADE FOR BEN FOLDS. The man is like, seriously, the
perfect man on the face of this earth. People think that he is just a balding
ugly guy. Oh my god no. He is sooooo cute... and his hair gives him additude.
I love a man who is very musical.. its such a turn on when a man can improv
like that. And his clothing style is out of this world. AHhhhhhhh I LOVE HIM.
I know this sounds like an obession note.. im not obsessed with him.. I just
like him a whole lot. And hey! It was a subject. Ahh those dimples!!
ADORABLE. I just dislike it when he keeps his hair shabby...but in the Steer
Reels vid, during Don't Change Your Plans, he has a lil scrub goin on.. which
i find cute.. :o) I went to Williams College, Mass for a concert last night,
and during Stevens Last Night, everyone is quiet except for me screaming "I
love you Ben" HE WAVED TO ME.. I FLIPPED OUT!!! Ahhhhh... I'f i ever got to
meet him.. i would like talk to him for hours about his musical talents.. It
intrigues me. Okay enought blabin

Subject: randomness and army/regrets

okay,

well, my take on the "why does regrets start the same as army " and well, as
a "Concept" album, of course different musical and lyrical themes are going
to be brought up time and time again (think army into redneck past.....then
you get that message from ben's dad on 'most valuable possesion" where he
ends with "i'm going to go back to bed and forget what i was thinking about"
and then right into "i thought about sitting on the floor in second grade"
those 4 songs more than any other on the album, to me, fit the "concept" idea
the best, you know???)

anyway

as far as the next single, yes i think it's safe to say that DCYP will be the
next one, the little sticker that they put on the front of the record when
you buy it says right on it "featuring Army, DCYP, and Magic"...generally the
record co puts the first few singles on that little sticker....yes, they will
probably edit DCYP, cause 5 minutes seems to be too long for a "hit single"
these days....the average joe schmoe radio listening kids just don't have the
attention span, i guess.....my guess is that they will cut the second
bridge/solo part, or some of the flugelhorn stuff in the first bridge/solo
section

anyway

that's all for now....only other BFF related thing i can think of right now
is how me and one of my friend's friends (whom i have never met before
tonite) broke out in Emaline at the top of our lungs out at this bar
tonite...that was a site to see (and hear...hee hee )

anyway

i'm tryin my best to get to the Kosovo show...anyone know when tix go on
sale??

till later

Hey There!
Does anyone know what the address was for the Army
Sheet Music? I only managed to download one page of
the...many. if you do, please email me with it, or
could someone email me the Armchair from 11th April?
That'd be much appreciated. Hey, here's a tragic
story of me and songbooks. I had been eagerly waiting
for their arrival at a local music store when the guy
told me that the person who held all the songbooks
lived in Sydney. And recently there was that huge
hail storm with hail the size of lemons, was it? and
all the stock was ruined because of the hail. boo
hoo, so now i have to wait for three more months. At
least i can spend that time saving money.

Thanks for the space!
Aimee

TUBORM rocks. i love the timpani's.

Ben's got gorgeous dimples

And, i agree with the Kermit people.

Hey everyone :)

I haven't been on the armchair for about a year now, so forgive me if this
has already been discussed, but I noticed that there were no Reinhold
messner transcriptions up on the websites yet. I have figured out some
(rather unsophisticated but fairly close) transcriptions to a few of the
songs, so if anyone wants to check them out (in some cases they're not
complete, but hey, its a start!!) or even just organize them a bit and use
them for their pages they're welcome to mail me.

have fun with the new album!!

Subject: MY BFF EXPERIENCE

hi all you armchairites,

well, here is my story. saturday, may 1 was my first live show. i have been
a big fan for about a year and a half and have been on the MA since last
summer. i was psyched. as most of you know, they played the spring fling at
tufts. also playing were brother chameleon, cherry poppin' daddies, and
sugar hill gang. the gates opened at 11 AM and bff was set to play at 4. i
woke up at 8 and was out of my house by 9. my four friends and i were the
first people to go in. we were let in without the accompaniment of a tufts
student (thanks to larry harris, candidate for president of the tufts student
body) anyhoo. we staked out our spot in the front left so as to get a view
of the piano keys. we waited all day. darren was testing out the drums in
the back before any of the bands started. robert walked across the stage at
one point. the boys finally came on at 4. it was a great show. here were
the songs (not in the order that they were played but just in the order that
i can remember them from the albums) ---> philosophy, underground, OAD,
fair, SFTD, steven's, battle, emaline, narcolepsy, plans, mess, magic,
hospital song, army, redneck past, and jane. they opened with plans and
closed with OAD and SFTD was the sole encore song. what a great show. it
was obvious that the boys were a litte rusty. i don't know whether ben was
laughing or just covering a loss for the words during mess. as doug goodman,
the tour manager, told me later while talking about cover songs on this tour
"they don't even know all of their own songs yet." ben had two pianos. one
was for the metallic sound on mess and hospital song and maybe some others
but i forget. robert played a sythesizer-ish looking thing during songs like
narcolepsy and redneck past. darren had a gong which was pretty cool. so,
after the show about a dozen or so of us psychos waited to try to meet the
band despite what some of the tufts security crew told us. we toughed it
out. someone told us where the tour bus was so we went over. there was ben.
talking in a group next to the bus. i got him to sign my messner postcard
that i got in the mail. and i took a picture with him that came out pretty
lousy because the sun was behind us but at least you can tell that it's him
and me. :) i told ben how much he rocked and how i loved ben folds five and
majosha (which seemed to catch him a little off-guard) but then he went off
to hang out with two of his friends who are from around here. then, the
group of us migrated around a corner where darren was hanging out with some
people. i got him to sign my postcard and took a picture. as i sat next to
him he said "tell me what you want for christmas." then we were told that
robert was back at the stage. so we went there and he was. so a group of us
talked to him. he signed my card and took a picture with me. during
steven's, ben sang some name that sounded like quamee (pronounced KWA-MEE)
instead of steven. and "he'd never love a woman with halitosis" then made
some comment before the last line that was something like "because quamee's
breath smells like dookie" so robert told us that quamee was just a joke
because the guys were talking about getting in fist-fights in school and that
conversation somehow evolved into "hey quamee, your breath smells like
dookie." robert said that the "people who eat doo doo on film" (or whatever
it is) was just a spontaneous joke too that came right out. so we go back to
the tour bus and meet up with doug goodman who is a GREAT guy. robert went
into the tour bus with these girls who didn't have a clue. they believed
doug when he told them that he was ben. they were asking robert what he
played so i walked over and told them that he played the guitar. "haven't
you ever heard the guitar solo in that ben folds five song? that's him" (i
point at robert and he nods) so he takes three girls and a guy into the tour
bus and hangs out but there isn't room for us or some shit like that.
whatever. trey hamilton was in there too. doug told us that they were
talking and one girl just never shut up enough to give them an opportunity to
kick her out. so while these girls were proving to robert and trey how
little of a clue they had, my four friends and i were outside lying on the
grass at tufts eating peanuts and talking with doug goodman. (who is not
related at all to anna goodman...why didn't i know this?) so we just chatted
with him about what it's like to be on the road and what it's like to work
with a band. lots of small talk that would make this post even longer than
it already is so i will skip it. then darren comes back with a girl who was
desperate to meet him after the concert and get her drum head signed. she
and darren went out for sushi. i asked darren how come i couldn't find
anything by his old band armaggedon. he immediately knew that i was on the
armchair and answered me "maybe because i was 16." so that explains that.
so he walks off again. ben comes back with his friends. robert is playing
soccer with one of the roadies. i get ben to sign his water bottle that i
got after the show. he signs some stuff for my friends...a beach ball, a
flannel, a coke bottle filled with iced tea. i joke about having him sign my
underwear and he tells me that he once had gary shandling sign his boxers.
then i ask him who emaline is. he told me that emaline is about julianne and
julianne is about emaline. so, i'm guessing that ben sings emaline about a
girl whom he loved name julianne and sings julianne about some bitch name
emaline? no. emaline was just a name that ben thought belonged to an
actress from a movie that he mentioned but he was wrong. so, julianne is
about no one? i've heard him say that julianne lived in michigan and worked
at an ice cream parlor. whatever. i don't know. so, finally, we thank ben
for being so cool. we thank doug for being so cool. we go home. sorry for
the gigantic post but i figured that it was VERY BENTENT. i hope everyone
else is as lucky as i was when you all go to shows. i guess the boys will be
playing the orpheum in boston some time in june. i want to say hi to all the
armchair people who i met there. hi leigh. hi jody and kate. hi suzanne.
thanks to mike for getting us tickets. i owe you some tapes now. i think
that's it. well, that's all from me right now. if anyone wants to feed into
my obsession some more, e-mail me: paul1681@aol.com

adios,
Paul

Hi there,

I'm new to the list so bear with me!

I saw ben folds five/beck/sean lennon june 3rd at the molson amphitheatre in
toronto - it was great!
i'm going to see bf5 this coming wednesday in toronto at the guvernment.
anyone else planning on going?

Also, i'm not sure if everyone already knew this or not, but they are going
to have an appearance at muchmusic in toronto, so if you're interested in
meeting them, go! (the more people there are, the more of a chance you'll
get in and see them!)

so, i went to get tuborm tonight and i almost got in a car accident on
the way. some woman cut out in front of me, but luckily i was paying
attention. imagine that one; hospital song would have fit in nicely.
best buy didn't have the video with it, though, so i'll have to look
around for that one some more.

anyway, i think the new album is great, and i agree that it needs to
sink in before you really appreciate its splendor. maybe you could
think of w&ea as bf5's desk job, and tuborm as what happens when they
get bored and decide to work at a strip club.

who originally made the "don't change your plans"/kermit relation?
heh. it made me think, hey, i wonder if they could get kermit to do a
video for it. does anyone else think the lyrics are more ambiguous on
this one? and hey, for some reason i always get james earl jones and
james earl ray confused. i had to think about why ray would be in
lullabye, for a second, until i realized i was thinking about the wrong
one.

i think the change is a good thing. necessary, even. it's still ben
folds five, of course. they just kind of changed their clothes.
actually, you could even take that literally, if you look at the lyric
books from the other albums. from t-shirts to suits.

speaking of those pictures, is the one of darren, ben, and robert all
together from the cmj session? looks kind of like it.
