I have the Owsley album, and I absolutely agree--it is superb. There's a
little bit of Ben Folds Five in there, a little bit of Beatles, hmm....I
don't know what else...but it's for anyone who has a sweet tooth for power
pop. I give it my highest recommendation. Hmm, I'll have to listen to
Sonny Boy again....

about 2 min. in, when he says, "and i dont believe in love, so i cant be

it doesnt sound like he's saying that. So if anyone knows the answer i would

I was going back over the Letterman version of Army after having listened to
TURBORM straight for a while. I must say that the studio version is much
better (some of you may say that this is to be expected, however, I've heard
live stuff of bands before that I like better than their studio stuff. Also,
I've heard a different version of Smoke before that I really liked that wasn't
the WAEA version). The horns seem really sloppy on the show... Did the CBS
Orchestra back them up or did the Five bring their own horn section? I think
that when I saw them in show they put on a much better (and more musically "on
key") show. Just my $.02.

WAEA is the forced big-name label album
TUBORM is the "we have money now" album

guess which one I like best? ;-)
Are you saying that the "fun" was the band's or the audiences? confused..

Hey!!
Someone mentioned Owsley!! Owsley ROCKS. Ginger, Sandi, Jess, and I (the
ones you should know, jk) caught an Owsley show in Chapel Hill last
month....that's also the show where I happened to meet Ben! So there's proof
that Owsley and Ben have a history. And, after Owsley's rockin' set, Ben
brought him over and introduced him to us. Great guy! Ben and (Will) Owsley
used to be associated with The Semantics, even though I don't think Ben
played on the record. Everyone, I recommend Owsley's S/T cd. It's been in my
cd player ever since I bought it. It's some great pop stuff. Go get it! AND
visit www.owsleymusic.com and look at the pictures on the Tour Dates
page...those are from the show we saw in North Carolina!

"Zavelow! Zavelow! Zavelow!"
Emily

P.S. As far as "Sonny Boy" goes, it reminds me of "Where's Summer B.?" in the
beginning with the piano chords, but i don't really think it's about Ben.

To the person that mentioned Owsley:

Yes, Owlsey rocks. His album is easily the best power pop album of the
year. The Semantics disc is great, too...several songs on the s/t are old
Semantics tunes. He puts on a great show--I've seen him play 3 times. To
top it all off, he's a really nice guy, as are the other guys in his band
(esp. the infamous Jerry Dale McFadden, bonus cool points if you know who
he is). If you want to check him out, go to www.owsleymusic.com. (Emily
and Jessica, those pics on his site are from the show we went to, where
you got to meet your rock stars!)

I'll be at the Raleigh, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Nashville shows with Miss
Shorter and hopefully the Indian Girl. Watch out for us!

Ginger :)

Umm not to burst your bubble of ignorance but a lot of bands have hidden
tracks, even some have you skip through 20 minutes of dead space just to
listen the the hidden track. :l

George Pinfield here the facts on Ben Folds and Will Owsley, Ben played drums
while Owsley fronted and played guitar for the 3 piece called the Semantics,
They were signed to DGC Records but were dropped before the album was ever
released. Ben left the band to form Ben Folds Five and Owsley went on to be
(yes no lie or joke in this line) Amy Grant's touring guitarist and then did
vocals on a Shania Twain album, he inbetween doing Amy Grant's tour and
Shania Twains album recorded his own album, All I can say is that everyone
should pick up the album.

<<ANYWAY... If anyone sees a girl with short hair about 22 at the Forum

35!!!

Well I am pretty sure that someone will notice you then. :l

<<Matt Pinfeild is the all knowing music god, OK? So he tripped on his words
a
little, that doens't mean he's an idiot or that he doesn't know anything
about the guys. He knows their personalities well enough that he let Darren
get away with that stupid (but hilarious) story, didn't he? If you had
watched their last appearance on 120 minutes last year, you would all know
that he knows plenty about the guys. =p Stop the dissing of Matt, it's
totally uncalled for.>>

Yes I agree with you 100%, dis someone who needs to be dissed, Like Jesse
Camp or Ananda Lewis.

<<Ben on Before they were Rock Stars was too funny...to all of you who missed
it, you should quit your job and school or whatever and watch VH1 all day, so
you can see it! >>

Umm I would disagree, if you have a vcr just record vh1 while you are away,...
Well I am away to bed.

George.

Subject: spare reels

hey armchair!
my spare reels video arrived today from cdnow, and after messing with my tv
controls to make it work properly, i got to watch it.
and i discovered something. a whole lot of the video shots of sftd were
taken from the brisbane concert on july 30th 1998, and i was there. a whole
lot of the images in other songs as well were from that same concert, which
is really cool.
and, the piece de resistance... ben was wearing the shirt that we brisbane
armchairers threw on stage for him. if i had paused the video at the right
spot, i could have read my name! i didn't realize for ages that some of the
shots were from festival hall. my sister (who was at the concert, and
watching the video in the hope that they'd do something really stupid that
she could laugh at) and i both saw him in the shirt, and we both said 'hey!
that's from brisbane!'. and i started freaking out a little bit. ok, a lot.
but that's so cool! my name's on that video. he he he...
also, since with spare reels comes the digipak of TUBORM, can someone tell
me if there's anything interesting inside that digipak? cause i was going to
go and sell it at a record store as the american release, and i think it'd
be worth more if it was still shrinkwrapped, so i don't want to open it. so
what's inside the shrink wrap?
and for anyone who can get the courier mail in queensland, australia,
there's apparently an interview with ben in it. that's the friday may 14th
paper. i'll be getting some extra copies, because in my economics class
we're getting the paper (the federal budget just came out and that's why)
and i can just take a few extra copies out with me. if the article's any
good, i'll give those extra copies away, or trade them or something.
