For those of you unfamiliar with haiku, it is a form of Japanese poetry. The
 structure is:

  5 syllables (ironic, huh?)
  7 syllables
  5 syllables

Here's some I came up with. Maybe the rest of you would like to contribute
 some?

 crazy little man
 assaulting a piano
 what'll they think of next?

 Ben, bass, and drummer*
 playing their little hearts out
 i'm in heaven now

(*I don't have web access at the moment, so I can't go to the web page to
look up the names of the other two guys in the band. No slight intended to
these two fine musicians! I remember one is Darren, but I can't remember the
 other.)

 my favorite band
no one else knows about them
 what stupid losers

 three talented guys
 playing the hippest music
 the crowd goes insane

 ben shows his talent
 the piano surrenders
 waving a white flag

 i love ben folds five
no one else has heard of them
that's fine - more for me!

 can you believe it?
 they don't have a guitarist
 it's better this way

 he plays at warp speed
 fingers act like they're possessed
 how does he do it?

 Sarah's got Pearl Jam.
 Mark's got Stone Temple Pilots.
 I got Jackson Cannery.

 i wanted to play
a song, to open for Ben
 manager says no

 Frank does the digest.
now we can love each other
 on the internet

By the way, I'm still looking for local fans (Austin TX) who want to get
together to sing BF5 songs. I can play 'em all. Also, my band is doing a
small tour this summer, and it wouldn't take much to talk us into doing BF5
karaoke if you wanna show up and sing BF5! This is as close as you're gonna
get to being part of BF5. :-) It's like Fantasy Island, huh? Here's our
 tentative schedule:

June 6 Thu Dallas, TX June 18 Tue New York, NY
June 7 Fri Little Rock, AR June 19 Wed New York, NY
June 8 Sat Memphis, TN June 20 Thu Washington, DC
June 9 Sun Nashville, TN June 21 Fri Raleigh, NC
June 10 Mon Ashville, NC June 22 Sat Ashville, NC
June 11 Tue Raleigh, NC June 23 Sun Nashville, NC
June 12 Wed Washington, DC June 24 Mon Memphis, TN
June 13 Thu New York, NY June 25 Tue Little Rock, AR
June 16 Sun New Paltz, NY June 26 Wed Dallas, TX
June 17 Mon New Paltz, NY

Yeah, this was discussed a few months ago; Eric Bachman from the
Archers Of Loaf has a solo album under the name Barry Black and Ben plays
pianos and drums on it. The album itself is a very bizzarre mix of many
musical types and those looking for simple pop music might not like it,
although I think it's the beed knees. As a fun side note, a vocal track is
sung by Summer Burke, as in "Where's Summer B.?"
If anybody's interested, the Archers Of Loaf are a great band
themselves. If BF5 is "punk rock for sissies" than the Archers are "Punk
Rock for Intelligent People". While full of piss & vinegar & guitars like
any punk music, the Archers differentiate themselves from the rest of the
punk pack with smart lyrics and presentation. Thumbs up in my book.
And, back the Ben, I remember somebody said they had heard him do a
cover of the Archers of Loaf song "Web in Front" in concert. Does anybody
have a tape of that or any other of Ben's Archers of Loaf covers?

 Love and Silly Putty,

After reading about the BF5 track that is to be included on The Truth About
Cats & Dogs soundtrack, I got out my trusty copy of the latest Ice CD
newsletter and discovered that its tentative release date is April 2, so pick
yourself off the sidewalk and start saving up your pennies again!

 Hi everyone,

I'd like to invite all of you to check out an on-line magazine published
by some friends of mine, called "The Turntable." They interviewed Ben
last month and it's a very entertaining article. The address is:

Let me know what you think of it.

Hey Kevin. Doug here. The show will be at Moe's. The tickets will go on
sale one hour before showtime at the door. I think it was a huge mistake to
do the tickets this way, as I believe the folks at Moe's have vastly
underestimated the popularity of this band (especially in Seattle). My wife
and I will be there around 7:00 for some dinner and then go stand in line
for an hour and half hoping to get in. What a bummer that it had to be done
 this way. Oh well.

So, as impressed as I am with BF5, I just had to play them for my 52 year old
mom who is always appreciative of any kind of good music. I knew Ben's piano
playing alone would probably win her over...(and it did)

So while driving her to Venice Beach this weekend, while she was down from SF
visiting, (we kinda got lost) so she had a chance to listen to the entire
 album.

She brought up a very interesting comparison ( I thought ) of BF5 to Queen.
And after she said this, I could see it too.

 Does anyone else see this?

Was Ben a great Queen fan?

 Is my mom on crack?

Replies not necessary, but would be helpful.

 Love to you always,
 Tracy

[The Queen/Ben Folds connection has come up many times before. Ben has
said, though, that Queen/Freddie Mercury weren't a big musical influence
on him. He didn't own any of their records but did enjoy them on the
radio. He was more steered by Little Richard and early Elton John. -fjm]
