I have meant to post this for awhile...but you know the work thing stopped me.

Anyways...I saw BFF at Mama Kins last month in Boston. I had been listening
to the CD constantly for months and was very excited to hear the band. I
have to agree with everyone else...the Customers were like every other
band....boring(yawn)...but on to the main show

From the current (Uncle Walter) to the new songs (Every night out is
Steven's Last Night ...awesome plus love the title!!) BFF rocked the house.
It was great to see a sellout? as well.

Unlike others, I don't mind if the band gets big. I love to say I saw them
way back when. With the talent they have, they deserve to get rich quick.

Imagine BFF on MTV's Unplugged? The band was made for this format. I can't
stomach the idea of Kennedy interviewing, Ben but what the hell.

 Get back to Boston quick!!!!!

Can't confirm this but have seen Dag's tour schedule, which mentions an
April 19 show in Athens, Ga., with Ben Folds Five at the Georgia Theatre.
Maybe someone from that area can pass along the details.

Someone said in the last digest had a theory about if you listen to a
piece of music with as much effort as someone put into it you'll
appreciate it a lot more. I don't agree with ya there at all. Yeah, its
true if you listen closely to any great songs you'll pick up little
things here and there that sound remarkable but there needs to be that
initial something that attracts you to a song. I've bought records and
tried listening to them till I ended up knowing the words but I just can't
seem to get into them. That's what so great about BFF there's so much
going on but at the same time there is that pop sound that gets
 you hooked right away.
There was someone else who said guitars were overated and should be done
away with except for the bass. You are obviously trying to either start
contraversy or you're really that stupid. Every instrument in this world
has a place and I guarantee you there are some songs that you completely
love that would not sound right anywhere else except on a guitar. So if
you're trying to get a response here it is. Don't bother next time.

I got the soundtrack. I'm not sure that it has come out yet, but I get
promo's weekly for free so... The song on it is called "Bad Idea". Its
the "retarded" song. The only thing I have to say about this song is, its
short. Other people on the album include Cowboy Junkies, Sting, Suzanne
Vega, Squeeze, Blues Traveler, Jill Sobule, The Brand New Heavies and
much more. Its an OK CD. Nothing spectacular (The Ben Folds Five
song isn't one of their strongest, and not as good as their previous
soundtrack cut "Song For the Dumped"), but a couple songs stand out.
Check it out if you have the time!

I'm a pop-rock piano player (22) just putting together my own
trio (I can't believe how many people in BFF reviews make such an
issue about piano trios -- what's the big deal if you've got
balls and musicianship??) while playing solo in New York. Ben is
the first person to come along in years that does almost
exactly what I do (beating the sh*t out of pianos, playing
without a guitarist, injecting humor into rock music during
what's become about the most humorless era ever in rock!), so I'm
obviously both jealous and excited to see things are going so
well for these guys. What an incredible band! They better come
back to New York this summer (and maybe I can get them to come
see my show -- I think they'd dig it....)

Best new band in years and years -- please keep me posted!!

{Warning: as I look back on it, this story is boring and pointless, Read
 At Own Risk}

This is the story of one man's frustrations while just trying to
be a good BFF fan. First of all, let me introduce myself properly. My
name is Jared Pinkos and I go to school at Lake Superior State
University(home to one of the greatest college hockey teams in the
nation). But there is a problem. LSSU is in the dreadful town of Sault
Ste Marie, in Michigan's Upper Penninsula. It is about 350 miles or 5
hours from the metro Detroit area(what I consider civilization). On a
fine April 9th, I set out to buy myself a copy of The Truth About Cats
and Dogs and possibly stumble on a copy of this rumored Uncle Walter EP.
The local music store is called On Cue(similar to a Musicland or Sam
Goody). I had seen a copy of Ben Folds Five there last week, so I
figured they would have what I'm looking for. After 20 minutes of
searching the racks, I politly asked the sales clerk for some help. The
look of utter confusion on his face when I asked for Ben Folds Five was
hilarious. I then showed him to the copy of the BFF CD and asked if they
had Uncle Walter or The Truth...he looked just as I did(Big Help!) and
said they might come in next week(apparently this fair town recieves
shipments one week after the release date). I the asked if I could order
the CD's to ensure that they would arrive next week. He told me that
they don't order CD's, they just have what is shipped to them(this
sounded a bit ridiculus to me, but I went along with it). I then decided
to take a stroll around the store to check out other releases. I
overheard the guy on the phone say "Would you like me to special order
that for you ma'am". What the Hell was this! Furious, I approached the
counter and asked why I could not special order a copy of the CD's I
wanted. He maintained that the shipments they get are not controlled by
the store and he told me to check back next week. Of course, I know they
won't have it next week, but what can I do? This Sucks!! just venting
some of my frustration. By the way, could someone clear up some things
for me(If there is an Uncle Walter EP when and what's on it, and what is
the name of the Elektra thig w/BFF and when does it come out?) Please Help
-JRP(the only BFF fan in SSM)

 >>Gutiars are superfluos. They are overrated.

Well, to a point. But music can really be brought alive by cords that
correspond well to music. It's different with punk rock music where the
guitar is the main tool used to add backround to the singer's screaming, but
in music like BFF where you can understand the lyrics, the guitar is just
another methoid of exspression. Ben just happend to be good at the piano. i
would still like their music just as much even if Ben played his piano part
on guitar.(Most of it anyway, the piano does leave way for more complicated
 finger patterns)

look, before this goes any further, I thought I'd warn people not to be
taken in by this moxy fruvous recommendation. That's all I will say,
simply because one can only use the word "sucks" so often before it
becomes repetitive. If you like Ben Folds Five, it certainly does not
follow that you will like Moxy Fruvous.

thank you for listening. i live in fear that Canadians are represented
to the world by people like Moxy Fruvous.

[Hey watchit - there are a lot of Frufans here, including your
moderator. And Steven Page hates your town too. I have to agree with your
reasoning that if you like BFF you won't necessarily like Moxy. But you
might! Realistically, Moxy Fruvous, as wonderful as they are, don't have
enough popularity south of the 49th to make much of an influence. I think
that when people here think of typical Canadians they think of Bob & Doug
 McKenzie. -fjm]

About the concert in Atlanta on April 21: Doors at the Roxy open at 7 PM and
the concert starts (I'm guessing with the opening band, some local band) at 8
PM. It's a general admission concert, and so far Ticketmaster has no idea
that there is a concert. However, you may be able to get tickets at the Roxy
in Buckhead when the Roxy is open. I am not sure about the tickets.

   I'm Azusa Motohashi in Japan.
I enjoy reading BFF digests.(But reading only English takes me
 a lot of doing.)

  1: On #61"Piano Music(BFF) " and #62"BF5 Sheet Music(and thank
 you for your

message!!!)" ,they mention about BFF scores. I want them ,too.
But in Japan, A magazine which named "KEYBOAD MAGAZINE"
 carried
the piano score of "PHILOSOPHY". If you want the copy,
 send me E-mail
and tell me your address. I'll send it to you.
2: Japanese music magazines feature Ben Folds Five. Sentenses are
  all Japanese
(I try to translate Japanese into English as accuracy as I
 can.), but I think
you'll enjoy their photos. If you take interest in it, I'll

 Hi--
Saw "...Cats & Dogs"; loved "...Cats & Dogs"; bought the soundtrack to
"...Cats & Dogs." If you're wondering whether to pick it up just for the BF5
song, maybe you should wait until you've seen the film; a lot of classy stuff
is featured prominently on the soundtrack. It leans heavily on A&M's "Adult
Alternative" roster, but Suzanne Vega comes through with a good one and
Squeeze offers one of their best songs in years. Elsewhere on the CD, Cowboy
Junkies play a very catchy midtempo number, Paul Weller inches ever closer to
Steve Winwood territory, and Jill Sobule does something refreshingly uncute.
Then there's this Blues Traveler song you might have heard...Ben's "Bad
Idea," in fact, sounds out of place among all this coffee-bar pop. I'm kind
of a cheapskate and I don't regret shelling out my $13.
By the way, I saw the Barenaked Ladies tonight and they played the BF5 album
at least twice while the crowd filed in. Figures, don't it?
 Cheers, Rahoolio
