I heard that it was Imperial Drag opening for Alanis on her tour. Two
members from Imperial Drag used to be in Jellyfish.

Well, being a Memphian and a concerned fan standing beside myself after
hearing of the cancellation, I called the New Daisy (where they were
scheduled to play). The guy on the other end of the phone said "one of the
guys is sick,". I asked and he said it would probably not be rescheduled.
And as I sit here, barely able to type or see the screen through the tears
in my eyes, I want you to know that the guy on the other end of the phone
seemed a little jerky, so he could be wrong. I write this with a great deal
of anger, frustration, and sadness. But it was expected. You see, the
Rentals also broke my heart in January by ducking out on Memphis. WHY ARE WE
BEING PUNISHED? C'mon... Jerry Lee was going to be there.
So there's the story, as far as I know.
All I'm saying is they better reschedule!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Sir who wrote the following stuff,

 > Primus- Southbound Pachyderm (a lot of bass)
 > The Verve Pipe- Photograph
 > Smashing Pumpkins- 1979
 > Anything by The Cure
 > Candlebox- You

 > Spacehog- In the Meantime (I'm partial to that cause I run their webpage)

Are you sure you're not just writing down your favorite songs? I can see
BF5 doing something by the cure, and I think that "1979" would be
interesting, but the rest of it? Uh...forgive me if I sound a bit snotty,
but give these things 20 years, and then everyone will realize how cheesy
these "modern rock" one hit wonders (Spacehog, Verve Pipe, Candlebox) are,
and then I think they would be mildly entertaining. As far as covers that
are recent songs, they do "Champagne Supernova", which is grandiose and
cheesy in the way that only Oasis can be, and a bit of "Killing in the Name
Of" by Rage Against the Machine...that's funny. Candlebox is just bad
taste. Let Candlebox make a mockery of themselves playing it. As far as
"Southbound Pachyderm" is concerned...I can't quite hear a piano part to
that. I wouldn't really want to hear BF5 do any of these songs. As far as
doing Matthew Sweet...it'd be cool if they did a swingier version of
"Girlfriend", but I think "I've Been Waiting" would be great to hear, with
the harmonies, or "Time Capsule". Any Matthew Sweet is a pop gem, and
hearing Ben Folds and crew do a cover would be sheer pop bliss. I say they
should do the "Theme From Shaft". That'd be cool...hearing Ben Folds
suavely say "Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the
chicks" and Robert and Darren, in their falsetto harmony, singing "SHAFT!"
in the background. That's beautiful, folks.

It's an old Jewish (I think) traditional song.

 I love Sara's (Hotdoglove@aol.com) suggestion for the chant...Buckle Up
Mortals! It has nothing to do with BF5 per se, other than you probably
need to buckle up for their live show, matey. Ah whatever...I'm prepared
to be based. Once again I'm out from Charleston WV...

Hi, I'm new so excuse me if I sound like a dick. Anyway,
any plans for BF5 to come to Australia? We don't know
anything about them here so any info would be gratefully
 received.

It's funny that someone (was it Kym?) said they'd like to
hear BF5 do a cover of Jellyfish or Redd Kross - they're two
of my very favourite bands - although superseded at this
point in time by Ben Folds Five.

 Oh well, whatever.

Well, I wasn't going to add to the "cover songs" thread, since I
haven't had a chance to see BFF live yet, but I couldn't resist upons
seeing this. Another Jellyfish fan? I think we qualify as a "rare
species," at least in my experience...

Anyway, I would love to hear BFF do any of these jellyfish songs:
baby's coming back, joining a fan club, or he's my best friend. So what
 do you think, Kym?

Glad to see this mailing list. Now maybe I'll be able to find out
dates for some shows the next time they swing through California.

 Subject: Cover tunes

I'm surprised none of have suggested that BF5 cover piano based tunes.
Sure, straight covers may not ne that exciting, but I think it would be
great if they covered "The Last" by the Replacements. It's the last cut
on their final album, All Shook Down. If you have access to this album
listen to it, and you'll see why this song would be such an appropriate
cover. "Good Day" off of the new Paul Westerberg album would also be a
good choice. (Yes, I am being paid to endorse Repelacements/Westerberg
covers). I'm also surprised to see that no one has suggested Tori Amos,
Billy Joel, or Harry Conick Jr. covers... not that I'd like to see BF5
cover their songs, but they ARE the obvious artists for them to cover,
 wouldn't ya say?

Hava Nagila isn't really by anybody. it's a traditional Jewish folk type
song in which the lyrics are in Hebrew. it's usually sung at most happy
religious celebrations (Bar/Bat Mitzvah's, Weddings, certain joyous holidays)
it's very old and i doubt i can even find out who's it by. if you're
really that curios after my little speech, then e-mail me and i might
even be able to get a translation for you. if you're also wondering it's
probably done as a joke, because most popular bands wouldn't cover
 traditional Jewish folk songs.

and now you know. and knowing is half the battle.

may the force be with you

Hava Nagila is an old traditional Hebrew tune that's been around for
centuries. (Actually, the best cover of *that* one I've heard was by Herman
the German and Das Cowboy, a local Austin band. An instrumental surf polka
cover of a traditional Jewish folk song played by a guy in leather chaps and
a Keiser helmet. Be still my heart...)

As for the person who asked whether or not I'd seen BF5 do any covers, yes, I
have. My point is, covers are the bane of good songwriters. I've seen bands
with perfectly good songwriters (The Beat Farmers, Dash Rip Rock, and Javelin Boot
to name just a few) who have become better known for funny covers than for
their great originals. It just seems a waste of time to worry about whether
or not a great pop (it's not a dirty word, dammit!) band should be doing a
straightforward pop song by another great pop songwriter (Matthew Sweet
being the example). It's just redundant! Fun is fun, but I would hate to see
BF5 become just another novelty act or cover band. Down with covers!

Does anybody know dates of BF5's tour?? My web stuff is down, so I
can't get to the site. I was just recently at a BNL concert (last Weds in
Chicago), and they played "Philosophy"--I was jumping up and down. My
friends looked at me like I was crazy, but I just kept singing and having a
 great time!
Someone was talking about BF5's bootlegs, and I would love to get one if
someone was nice enough to tape one for me. I have lots of other boots and
would be more than willing to trade. Just email me if you want to trade.

 Subject: listees at shows

We had a similar dilema on the +Live+ mailing list about how people could
recognize other "SOYers" (Straight Outta York is the list name) at
shows. Someone suggested we bring bananas and hold 'em high, an idea I
didn't particularly go for. But at a show I went to in Great Woods Mass,
there were 3 or 4 there with their bananas.
Eventually we got shirts made with permission from +Live+ to use their
logo and a quote from "White, Discussion." The email address and web
site are on the back along with the quote. They are very nice looking
and I am sure at least 30% of the over 2000 people on the list have one now.
As this list grows, I am sure some ambitious BF5er would like to take on
that project- I myself have not an iota of time.
Good luck to anyone who wants to take the project on!

hi! This is officially my first post!
I'm set to go to a BF5 concert tomorrow night, and I can't wait. All
the reviews here have been great!
I like the idea of using something other than a chant to identify
ourselves: something we could wear, perhaps?
Anyway, completely off the topic... Frank, could the "TV's Frank" be a
reference to the television show, Mystery Science Theater 3000? Just
 curious.
