Funny, we had this very debate on the Trash Can Sinatras list. People very
for and very against the Trashies getting some major success. The conclusion
is that we admitted that we were snobs. We look down at certain platinum
selling bands simply because they're selling lots of records. If the Trashies
or BF5 got big, would we turn our noses at them because the slack jawed
trogladytes like them, too? Answer: Probably.
My main fear of bands like BF5 getting popular is a little different: I'm not
so worried about the general public lowest common denominator liking them as
much as them having a hit record and then getting put through the record
company Quisinart. They get big, people's tastes change (and they always do),
the next record doesn't do so well, regardless of its quality, and they're
finished. I've seen it happen to Crowded House, Squeeze, and God knows how
many others.
BF5 have something special. They get minimal airplay and have a fiercely
loyal following, just like the Barenaked Ladies do. Eventually, word will
spread, they will get more popular, they will play bigger halls, and before
you know it, Ben's doing staduims. Isn't that how Metallica did it? They were
cult status, and then BOOM! They're huge. Success will come Ben's way
inevitably because they're a great band. Enjoy their humble beginnings while
you can. They will get bigger, with or without MTV.

Woah.. this took me by surprise! I am currently a proud senior of R.J.
Reynolds high school and an avid BF5 fan of three years now. I had no idea
that all these people went to RJR, if in fact we are talking about the same
one. I know that Ben Folds lives in Chapel Hill, but my RJR is in
Winston-Salem, NC. Are we talking about the same school?

Subject: D-Tox Single and Japanese album
Does anyone have any idea if the D-Tox "Jackson Cannery" 7" is available
anymore? If not from the label, does anyone have a copy they want to
unload? I'm also looking for the Japanese release of the BFF album with
the extra track. I would also be interested in getting that. I have
the US album, the 2 soundtracks with the BFF cuts, and the UK single on
CD and vinyl (The 7" has one less song). Please write to me if you have
either one of these items. Also, are there any bootlegs floating around

[The 7" Jackson Cannery single was done by the band itself and is out
of print and D-Tox is also out of stock, although there may be a few
copies in scattered stores that specialize in 7". A good shop should be
able to order the Japanese pressing for you. The catalog number and label

First off, for my first post in awhile, I would like to know (since this
damn cumpooter is tto slow to get on the www) if anyone knows if and when
neil young is coming to the madison WI area. The tour stops in Minneapolis
on Sept. 7, but unfortunately i move back to madison on aug. 30. secondly,
since i was under the stoopid assumptiion that bf5 was gonna be on the whole
tour, i figured that they would be there for the mpls show. or if not them,
at least jewel. but aghast!!! my thoughts are discombobulated when i find
out that neither bf5 nor jewel will be in mpls, but SPONGE (*ugh*) of all
bands is opening. oh well. maybe next time.
