Subject: what a rip
i bought a BFF 'underground' 7" recently and just listened to it today. i
have to admit i feel a bit ripped off. i bought it because of the b-side,
'satan is my master (live),' which was sheer disappointment. i was
wondering if you know of anyone on the list or whatever who might be
interested in buying it off me for what i paid - $4 (plus postage).

Subject: stuff
wow. some cool stuff in my first mailing type thingy. as some of you seem to
wonder if you are the only australian BF5 fans on the list, i'd like to know
if there are any more british ones? BF5 have done a session on the wonderful
mark radcliffe show - a friend of mine taped it if anyone is interested i'm
sure i can get it off him. and as for his appearance on jools holland's
programme - poor jools' piano very nearly didn't make the end of philosophy. i
too am having trouble getting my friend sto do anything except rais etheir
eyebrows at BF5 - but i'm used to that reaction cos they do it to XTC my
favourite band too. some people just don't like imagination in their music.
anyway BF5 is my vote for best album of the year already and am looking
forward to their appearance in leicester which is about ten miles from where i
am - loughborough, THE ends of the earth. i don't know much of teh bootleg
debate but i support bootlegs because - as using the REM example as well - you
can hear possibly inferior stuff but that is still lovely (anyone who has
heard NARRATOR will know what i mean) and as a nick drake fan, his parents
won't clear the home demo stuff that is left as of being of inferior quality.
sure it ain't BRYTER LAYTER but any nick drake will do me. its for fans
bootlegs - they'll have already annorakly bought anything else with teh bands
name on ( i own up!) so bootlegs are the final piece for the fans. sorry i'm
rambling but BF5 are just the greatest band and i love em and its so great to
meet other people who think the same. is it just me or does the album make you
grin like a lunatic for at least half an hour after the record has finished. i
mean any record that makes you air piano play has GOT to be cool...
cheers

Just thought I'd add my name to the list of Aussies reading the armchair
as BFF is relatively unknown in Aus - played on the national station JJJ
but even then we only get to hear julianne or underground - not even some
of the other great songs on the self-titled album like Philosophy or Alice
Childress. Still, I've got a CD player so I can listen to them whenever I
want!

Subject: Where are the bootleggers?
Everyone on the list is asking for bootlegs, but no one seems to be offering
any. Will the real bootleggers please step forward? I myself would love to
get a hold of some BFF bootlegs, but have nothing to offer but money for the
tape & postage and some Prince (yes, Prince) bootlegs. If you are one of
those elusive people, please email me.
P.S. - For those Jellyfish fans on the list, there is yet another addition to
the Jellyfish spinoff artist list, and this one is really outstanding. Jason
Falkner (1st Jellyfish album & the Grays) has an excellent solo album out
called "Author Unknown". If you don't believe me, it's on the listening
stations at Best Buy (or at least it was last week).

Subject: New BFF web page
Just thought everyone would like to know that EPIC records, new home of
our favorite band, has put up their web page again.
It can be reached at:
http://www.sony.dreammedia.com/EpicCenter/docs/index.qry
Then select Ben Folds Five from the artist list and there you are. It
has the European tour dates, a message center for fans, some info on the
Caroline release and a place to sign up for BFF mailing lists.
Two words of caution. This site appears to be heavily overloaded. I
couldn't even get on to it tonight. Also, when you fill out the form
to be added to the mailing list it returns a cryptic error message. But
it appears to still work because I got a subscription successful message
back from the sony site. I will take upon myself to notify the
webmaster of this site of the problem with the registration process. If
I can even get on it :)
See you on the bulletin board

[It's a good looking site but it's very heavy on the graphics, so no
wonder it takes so long and the server is so busy. It amuses me, though,
that the graphic the use on the Ben Folds Five page is the cover of the
Caroline album. -fjm]

Subject: A milestone?
Well, at long last, something I've been hoping for finally happened. I was
playing Jackson Cannery in a lounge in a dorm on campus today (I'm no longer
a student but that's where the pianos are!), and somebody came up to me and
asked, "Is that Ben Folds Five?" So it finally happened -- I met a fellow
fan outside the list. We played and sang a few more tunes, and it was a lot
of fun.
In other news, I filled in as a substitute deejay for a two-hour freeform
music show on KO.OP 91.7fm (community radio in Austin), and naturally I
played quite a bit of Ben Folds Five (Jackson Cannery, Where's Summer B.?,
and Uncle Walter).
By the way, many many digests ago, somebody inquired as to how the "edit"
version of Where's Summer B. (on the single release) differed from the
"album" version. The answer is that the "edit" version simply has the word
referring to what's out on the lawn cut out. A handy thing that I happen to
have this single with the "clean" edit version, otherwise I wouldn't have
been able to play Where's Summer B.? on the show.

Exactly. As another huge fan of R.E.M., I have a large collection of
bootlegs. Anyone who knows about R.E.M. bootlegs will be aware that
they recorded a show on 19/11/92 in their local club, the 40 Watt in
Athens, just after the release of Automatic For The People, and was their only
show to promote that album. This was bootlegged, and is available as
a veritable avalanche of different CD's, and is really probably the
most owned R.E.M. bootleg.
Now, when R.E.M. released the singles for Monster, the B-Sides were
made up of tracks from this show, and the final single, "Tongue", was released
on an extra length tape, so that all the singles could be put together to form a
whole show. And, despite the fact that I already had all the album tracks, and the
whole show from the B-Sides, who was the guy who bought all the
singles? And not only on CD, but also all of them on vinyl (because
of the various gimmicks such as the calendar pack and "tour programme")
and even the "Tongue" cassette. So for the stlg13 I put in the wallet of
some guy somewhere, I put *at least* that much in the already sizeable
pockets of R.E.M.
And, of course, the same goes for Ben Folds Five. Who's the guy who
has all the singles? And who is the guy who had the album on tape
from a friend, but still went out and spent stlg12 on the album anyway?
Precisely.
Sorry for rambling (as ever..). But, web-fans, Looks, Brains, and
Everything, my BFF web site, is rapidly expanding, and now includes
full lyrics (including unreleased songs), a song list featuring all
the songs known to have been performed, and the bootleg page will be
on it's feet very soon indeed, as well as the tour dates and BFF news
for the UK. So do drop by. Cheers!

Oh, and finally, I found an album by the Elvin Bishop Band. Cool! It
was only a pound, I guess I should have bought it, just for the
novelty. Talking of which, does anyone have lyrics for "Elvin
Bishop"??

Can anyone please give me details on the 7" vinyl of the Underground
rereleases. I haven't seen them anywhere, so if anyone knows if there are
two different ones, and which songs are on them, please let me know.
