 1. who has the new blur album, b.l.u.r.????????
 2...if you have it, i love you....
 3..who has the new gene album???????
 4...look at number 2...
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~
 i was just watching my tape with the new(in the states) video for
 blur...song no.2...
 the album came out yesterday....and i still haven't gotten it...yes,
 i'm pissed at myself....
 i was even thinking about lifting it...
 but i didn't say that...
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 the, i put in another tape...only this time it had a mini-interview
 with gene and it was the video for sleep well tonight.....
 hello?!?!?!.....i would do anything for them!!!!!
 i have had the cd single for fighting fit for awhile....but that's
 not enough..i'm in need of the new album
 it came out yesterday...i missed that too!!!and yes, i'm thinking of
 lifting that as well...

 CONCERTS...america vs uk
 okay, here's another country debate...
 i have noticed that living in san antonio, tx and living in honolulu,
 hawaii...that concerts here consist more of moshing, and basic
 hitting....not pogoing...well, a little....but it's a lot more rough..
 ..
 i was just watching a clip of gene live...and it was full of pre-
 pubescent girls that didn't know how to do anything but stand and nod
 their heads....watching blur live i have only seen pogoing...
 however, when lush came here....there was still moshing....(with the
 10 people that were actually at the show)....
 tell me, what are the different shows like in the uk?....i think that
 the reason that there is a lot of moshing here in hawaii is because
 we hardly get any big shows, so all of the drunk-frat-military-blokes
 come out to vent all the anger at any show....whether it is lush, or
 guttermouth/suicide machines....
 well, lisa loeb didn't have any moshing..i have to admit...
 however, it didn't even had any people that looked interested in her..

 Subject: chapel hill goes piano

 Hi again!

 Jonas Nilsson, also known as the swedish guy, just wanted to add to my last
 mail "the eric bachmann-connection" that Ben Folds actually plays some
 piano on the Barry Black-album too. He played the trickier parts that Eric
 Bachmann couldnt play himself.

 It seems like there is a piano-thing going on in Chapel Hill right now.
 Since Ben Folds first album, Eric Bachmann from the Archers first did that
 Barry Black-album, and then he brought piano in to the Archers new album
 "All the nations airports" (there is a quite beautiful pianosong called
 "Chumming the oceans" on there).

 And NOW!!! Mac McCaughan from the great Superchunk has done a new
 solorecord under the name Portastatic. (It is basically Mac, Jonathan Marx
 from Lambchop and Macs brother Matthew playing) .The record is called
 "Nature of Sap" and includes a lot of piano played by Mac!!! Mr. Folds
 really influenced the whole Chapel Hill-maffia, didnt he?

 Ben Folds was on swedish television "Z-TV" (Swedens MTV) the other day. It
 turned out that BFF themselves had picked Komeda as supportact and Ben
 explained why he liked them. He also explained what "Stevens last night in
 town" was about and it was something like this:
 "Steven is a friend from England who stayed with us for a while, and every
 night he said "Oh guys, this is my last night in town, wont you throw me a
 party?". And so we did,but three days later he was still there. And once
 again he went "Oh guys, this is my last night in town, wont you throw me a
 party?". And so we did and five days later he was still around. So I wrote
 this song and gave him a tape of it and said "Leave!"

 Take care

 Hi All,
    Just a note for any BF5 completists who might be out there: If you think
 the inclusion of "Song For the Dumped" on the new album lets you off the hook
 regarding the "Mr. Wrong" soundtrack, please be advised that it's a
 completely different recording! The new one's a lot more elaborate, but I'm
 not sure I don't like the "Mr. Wrong" version better.
    Sony finally sent a promo of "Whatever..." to the store where I work--I
 had to call 'em up and remind 'em, though--and I'm still trying to figure out
 exactly what I think of it. A couple of customers who heard it got really
 excited, though, including one guy who usually buys nothing but blues! I
 hadn't heard the single yet (our "alternative" station here is still hung up
 on testosterone-rock, though another contender in a nearby small town is
 building a bigger antenna to reach us in the big city, and these guys DO play
 BF5), and after hearing the whole album in one sitting--twice--I'm not sure I
 understand why "Battle" was the first track released. On the other hand,
 it's midtempo, a little moody, a little silly (Rockford Files, anyone?)...not
 a bad introduction for those of y'all who missed the first album (and wear
 fanny-packs).
 Immediate killer song? This time out, my vote is for "Brick."

 	Oh boy... I'll be surprised if no one else replies to this, but
 here goes anyway. Alex Chilton isn't particularly a punk rocker-type.
 But, he was in the band Big Star in the early 70's. To make a long story
 short, they are just incredible, and are frequently credited with having
 the sort of influence on the whole pop-rock music scene as some other
 bands like say the Beatles and the Velvet Underground. Alex's solo stuff
 isn't my favorite in the world (a bit on the loungy/bluesy side) but
 everyone should own a copy of Big Stars two albums _Radio City_ and _#1
 Record_ (they come on 1 CD now!) That's not to say that they only have
 two albums, just that there third one is a bit more of an acquired taste.
 Anyway, I would guess that Adam is probably making an Alex Chilton
 reference, as he generally has some pretty good taste in music and seems
 to like the whole pop scene that basically worships Alex.

 I was reading one of the News letters and someone was talking about Archers
 of Loaf and how much Ben likes them. Well I think Ben would have to like
 them in order to play on the album entitled "Barry Black" with the lead
 singer of Archers of Loaf, Eric Bachmann. The record itself has been out
 since the Ben Folds debut album, and is really an unofficial tribute to the
 Residents (Black Barry is the title of a Residents fanclub album). Its
 kinda strange, mostly instrumental music, much like the Residents, to which
 you have to listen to for awhile in order to like. If you buy the album
 just because of Ben Folds you won't like it, due to the fact that Ben only
 plays drums and piano on a few songs on the album.

 About the Counting Crows being big fans of BFF. This is probably old news
 but the song "Monkey" on their new album has a line about "Ben Folds on my
 radio."

 I'd read about Adam Duritz changing the lyrics to "Mr Jones" to also say "I
 want to be IN Big Star" instead of "I want to be A big star." Big Star was
 Chilton's critically lauded but commercially ignored group of the 70's, and
 if you have ANY interest in beautiful pop music, soaring harmonies and
 chiming chords (and I'm guessing you do, being a fan of BFF) then their
 albums are a must-have, though you'll probably have to order them.

 About the free promo singles as giveaways, it's standard in most recording
 contracts, that the record company keeps 15% of whatever is manufactured and
 the band loses all rights to the royalties of that 15%. The idea is that
 the 15% is reserved for promotional material to spark sales. Most go to
 radio stations for airplay and giveaways or some are given away at shows and
 occasionally the record companies get more creative. I think it's pretty
 cool that 550 would do something to get people into independently owned
 record stores, in hopes that you will go back and buy the album from that
 record store.

 So anyway, that's my 2 cents.

 In response to an earlier post about Alex Chilton, he was the main
 singer/guitarist in the highly influential early 70's band Big Star.
 They were not by any means punk. They were very poppy and often compared
 to the Beatles and the Byrds. Many bands such as Teenage Fanclub, the Posies,
 and The Replacements cite(d) Big Star as a major influence. I saw Adam
 from Counting Crows wearing a Big Star shirt in a pic in Rolling Stone or
 something. (BTW:if anyone knows where I can get a shirt like that with
 the cover of #1 Record please let me know.). On a BFF note, I just

 they play though, I'd prefer to see them at a club, like Trees. Byebyebye,

 This is in response to Allan, who on the last issue seemed to be misinformed
 about Alex Chilton. Alex Chilton was made famous by his band Big Star, who
 until fairly recently went virtually unnoticed. The band put out a couple
 of albums in the early seventies. The were extremely influenced by the
 Beatles and it is quite obvious on their first album #1 Record. The band is
 known to have influenced some of the biggest pop artists of our time.
         Alex did go on to record several very eclectic albums on his own,
 but as far as I know none compared to Big Star. If you get the chance to

 hey all -

 about this "free 'Battle' single" deal - i was in Other Music the other day
 (right across the street from the NYU-area Tower, you know, and although i
 can't stand half the employees there due to their excessive
 indie-snottiness, it's still the only place to get good small-label cds &
 vinyl without walking all the way to St. Marks, but i digress...) and i
 asked them about it (they had both singles for $9.99 each) and _they_ said
 that the only way they were giving them out for free was if you brought in
 a coupon. upon further questioning it was revealed that this coupon could
 be obtained "from their web site". but not only can i not get the official
 website to work at all (i get the first page with the different
 bass-drums-piano drawings, but when i click on any of them i get a "query
 error" screen), i haven't heard anything about this. so: is it true or
 merely a vicious cooler-than-thou record-store-boy rumor? if it is true can
 someone give me a hint as to how to get this magical deal?

 	TIA -

 ps - how many of you brits like blur? the new album is interesting, to say
 the least.
