Subject: Armchair Schmarmchair.....

My few cents worth on everything that's been discussed recently, now I've had a good chance to trawl through the 40 or so digests I had waiting for me. Going "Mainstream". It's no good posting to the Armchair saying that BFF should not go mainstream. It a
in't in their hands! If the population like it, then you can't stop them, just because you happened to know about BFF while they were still playing toilet cubicles at KFC or something. I think we should be glad that a lot of people are agreeing with us th
at Ben Folds Five make so f**king fantastic music.
Discussion of "Brick". Put it this way, I'd rather have an intelligent discussion by intelligent people on this than have to scour through the posts like "Hi, just thought I'd try out Majordomo" or something.
The chain letter thing. Hmm, what a mess. Okay, so I've already posted my thoughts, in a reasonably peaceful way, and thought of it as a one off. McCall has apologised, I believe her when she says it was an innocent mistake, leave it there. I was a bit a
larmed to see some of the reactions that she received from people I believed to have been polite and civilised. While you may not have liked the chain letter being posted, it is not a big problem, and you should have simply reminded her that this sort of
thing is not acceptable. HOWEVER, and please don't let's make this another huge debate, McCall, it really wasn't your place to post quotes from those mails that you received either. Posting private email correspondence without consent from the sender is a
breach of Netiquette. Anyway, let's all kiss and make up.

Please don't spoil this list. For a long time it's been great, it's had humour, intelligence, and best of all, nice people. Just because we get the thing sent automatically now, should there be a difference? The most common refrain I hear on the list is
"Hi, I just joined, I used to be on the <band> mailing list, but it was full of people bitching at each other, but this list is far better". Please keep it that way... thanks.

Well, I'm off to the bar. Peace.

Mark

Okay, Spidey,
I'm going to jump in here. I am a big Fruhead who can not attend
shows because they don't get down to the Southeast US. I saw them in
Boston 2 summers hence and they were great. They finished their show
with (check this out armchair cover song buffs) a medley of
Walk on the Wildside(lou Reed)
Dancing Queen (abba)
Angel of Harlem (U2).
By the end they were singing all three simultaneously. The words
they picked in the the three different songs struck a chord change
together-I was very impressed.
But BFF could sing most Moxy stuff as long as Robert played bass,
and you didn't go looking for Murray's (Moxy's Bass) low notes. I think
BFF can sing higher than Moxy in general, but Moxy is more traditional in
their vocal stylings. Still, I'd like to see Ben play "Stuck in the
90's" or maybe "Fell in Love"-which I think would bear an eerie
resemblance to Missing the War when played by bFF.
I will not return to a stream of mostly BFF Content in my next post.

Hi all,

You can probably guess where I get this info, based on my e-mail address,
but BFF has hit the mainstream in a way - a very glowing review in the new
People magazine! (Issue date 5/5/97).

As for a great live show, The Finn Brothers opening for BFF would make me a
happy camper.

Take care, y'all,

Perhaps I'll be daring enough to scope out Armchair people by shouting out
"Armchair, Maynard, whatever!", since we have no set method of identifying
one another.

can bring better mics for the tree.

I need something that will easily run into my D-8 DAT deck. Adaptors are

Greetings and Salutations,
I just wanted to say that I would love to see BF5 do a cover of...
JUNGLE BOOGIE-by a band I can't remember now.

opening band? the PIXIES (well, if they were still together)

One more thing. This may be late, but I was at the BF5 concert in Tempe
Arizona on April 12. Drove all the way from freaking New Mexico (land of
much dirt and cacti) to see them. But I got to talk to Ben, Robert and
Darren. They are all the nicest, most down to earth guys. And it was
defiently the best concert I had ever been too. I'm desperatly awaiting
Lollapalooza OR the Horde Festival (both rumored to have BF5). Ok, my
cheesey letter/note is done.

Wishing you all healthy colon,

OKAY, THAT'S IT! I HAVE TO SPEAK UP!
Please everyone, be careful when you post to this wonderful list.
At least don't quote an entire digest; It's getting out of hand! Another
thing to keep under control is the amount of wasteful messages sent just
to flame/disapprove of the foolish things peopl do on the list. We ALL
get the list, so obviously there's no need for EVERYONE to send their
angry messages. 1 stupid message is unfortunate, but 1 stupid message +
20 angry messages in response to that message is even worse! At least
have something relevant to the list to post...
I forgot to post about an interview I read about 3 weeks back that
mentioned that the boys did a recording of "She Don't Use Jelly" for a
lounge compilation CD coming soon. So yes, we'll all have the chance to
have a nice recording of it. I've only heard the song once a while back,
and I don't think I dug it, but I'm sure Ben's arrangement improves it
quite a bit.
A person mentioned that they did the Elvis Costello outtake "Wave
A White Flag". I think that only appears on his reissue of "My Aim is
True", so it's kinda neat to think that Ben might be listening one of my
favorite albums. Moreso neat that I'll possibly have a chance to hear
that nifty little toon when the come to FL. Because, of course, they ARE
coming to FL. That is an order.

Remember: 1 stupid message bad
1 stupid message + 20 "empty" complaints worse

Cheer up everyone! Can't you feel the love!?

Chicago was fun. I feel no need to post a setlist, since two others
already have done so. I didn't see many Armchair people there (a total
of only two, actually-- so a big "hello" to Susie and Chad).

They played a rather amusing impromptu nothing-like-the-original "Sexy
Motherfucker", which was definately one of the highlights of the show (I
like that originality "every show is different" kind of deal).

Am I the only person who knew Emmaline? The crowd seemed confused
durring that one.

Philosophy was played too fast.

Robert did a fine job with the stand-up bass on Brick. His "wait, I
missed my part there, let me play it again" schtick on Kate was amusing.
Darren's guitar rocked. So did his drumstick-twirling on The Ultimate
Sacrifice (haha, funny song).

Okay, I can't really say much more that hasn't already been said about
the band-- you all know that they are great; that's why you're on the
list.

"What makes them think they have the right to censor?"

Basically the fact that they are a private corporation and can say whatever
they want and do whatever they want with the videos since they purchased
the rights to them. The thing that really chaps my hide is that there isn't
any real competition. ANYWHERE! And on top of that MTV doesn't even show
music videos anymore! Something like 3 hours a day! (And that includes the
M2 previews!)Exactly what is the likelyhood of us getting M2 anytime in the
near future? I put the odds at somewhere between slim and snowball in hell.
The one positive thing I can say is that the last couple of times I HAVE
turned it on (which is admittedly not much) they have played Ben and the
boys first thing on M2! Man, oh man do I love BoWCCL!

Does anyone know what the next single is supposed to be? I have no clue,
but I really hope that it's One Angry Dwarf.... that song just summarizes
my life.

(And I'm sorry if I offended anyone with the litebulb thing... I just can't

God, I feel miserable this morning, but it's a good kind of miserable. My
throat is soar from all that screaming and my body is just one big pile of
mush, plus I have that sad feeling of the circus leaving town. But the fact
that my misery is a result of one of the best shows I've ever been to makes
up for it.
You already know the basics of the show so I'm just going to mention the
things that impressed me. For one, that constant buzz of energy, not just
from the band, but from the crowd. I saw them 2 years or so ago at the
Lounge Ax, and I remember that aspect pretty well, but it still amazes me
that 3 guys could create such a great vibe! And that audience was the best
Metro all-ages audience I've ever seen! Everyone was so into it!
The highlights of the show....Ben created a song on the spot with the
inspiring lyrics from an audience member's note, "You're one Sexy
Mother-Fucker". The best part was the line, "S-E-X-Y-M-O-T-E-R-F-U-C-K-E-R".
Fantastic! ...........You all told me about them playing "She Don't Use
Jelly", but you didn't tell me it was to a Bossa Nova beat! That was sooo
cooool! ...........I guess now is as good a time as any to tell you that
they've already sold out; they brought a guitar on stage. I guess I'm being
a little harsh since it was just a little electronic toy about the size of
Robert's hand, but next time it's going to be a toy with strings, and the
time after that a little bigger one, and then who knows?..........I dont't
know about sexy, but Ben was so cute when he got up to play that keyboard
horn thingy. He's got the greatest expressions!........I bet you didn't know
that the original title to "Fair" was "Ahh, Liz Phair". He let us in on that
little secret last night!........Did anyone else think of Greatful Dead
"space" when they paused and went into a little jam session after the line,
"slow it down some and have some space" during "Song for the Dumped"? Thank
God it was only 40 seconds instead of 40 minutes! (sorry just having a
non-halucinogenic backflash to one of the worst concert experiences of my
life).
Another note, a friend of mine from work and her boyfriend joined my
husband and I. She had only heard my CDs once last week, and decided to go
on Tuesday. Her boyfriend had never heard of them and isn't into music much.
Anyway, the reason I'm telling you this is because I think I've got a
convert. My friend loved it so much she was going to buy a T-shirt (they
sold out of the one she wanted) and is going out immediately to buy the CDs.
Her boyfriend also enjoyed it, but said he probably won't listen to them in
his spare time.
Unfortunately the Milwakee show is on a Tuesday or I'm sure I'd be road
trippin' it up there. If any of the band members read this, please, please,
please come back to Chicago!!!!!! soon!!!!!

Love to the band and that great audience last night. Ya'll are the coolest!

Margaret
